Like p_mori7 said, look anywhere you can for rust! Bang on the rocker panels, quarter panels, and the rear panels around the tail lights. These areas tend to fill up with lots of Bondo over the years. Check the floors too.

If this Scout is as clean as its made out to be......take it for a drive. If its ok mechanically, try to chisel the owner down to $1000 or less. Parts are not too bad to find for these if you take the time to search. Use your best instincts.

I have a '75 Scout II, (my avatar) and a '78 Scout Traveler. Never had an 80 or 800 (your subject is an 800) so I can't get super-specific on items to watch for. I do know a couple of experts on these Scouts that have worked on them from day one. Let me know if you need any info or help.

I have 3 of them, all I can say is they all have rust and no one makes replacement panels, the best advice is that older ih's have weak cam bearings make sure that it has good oil pressure when warm. They are a lot of fun to have.

If it is actually what he describes then it might be worth $1k. Like the others have said be sure to look over every square inch of the truck for rust before you make any deal.

My first four wheel drive was a 67 Scout it was reliable on and off road. I drove through a flooded intersection and to my surprise my feet got soaked. Yes the floor board was rusted out. Something that I was not expecting on an 8 year old vehicle ...young and uninformed at the time. Mine was a four banger so not much for speed but it held it's own off road.

As long as the body is not too rusted out, and it is a factory v-8 truck, this is a good deal. the 4 and 6 cylinder scouts of that time used a diffrent firewallcooling, and steering sytem, making v-8 swapps a little more difficult. Search for the Binder Bullitin home page, lots of great information and upgrade information there.

Yes as others have said (and myself working in the parts dept of an IH dealer for 20 years)Rust is the enemy. They are pretty much bulletproof other than the bodies. The V-8's are great engines, You might have trouble getting some stuff but running gear you should be fine with. It looks like that could be a lot of fun.
