So I did something dumb at stop #1 today i set a box down to pay and then forgot to pick the dang thing up! My memory was jogged by a pic, in the posts since I posted, and then I was "did I leave it in the van?" - No... So I went back on the off chance it was not resold... (my fault if it did)

Dang if the guy wasn't kicked back and still open, and dang if it wasn't right where I'd set it! cool dude, he said "take it" So I did and scanned for what was left, and found a nice brass cased barometer! $3! (His price, I want going to argue!)

The box this is what caught my eye, and I've heard of Vim tools before:

Y1 VIM.jpg

and inside: the set (not sure if any are missing, but 4 extras in any case) and the barometer:

Y1 VIM Barom.jpg
Here is my Vim set given to me by an old friend in Hayward.

The wife and I went on a little road trip the past week to Bend, OR and Eugene/Springfield, OR. I did get out almost every morning. Nothing much to report in Bend, but I did find several good spots in Eugene/Springfield. On Thursday and Friday morning, I visited four estate sales and found these approximately 150 wrenches, sockets, speeders, etc.

Plomb, SK, Herbrand, and Packer Ray (16 socket set) are heavily represented. I am still going through everything, but there is a vintage SUL wedge wrench (I believe Lugz and roy_olson have posted theirs too), a Blue-point PR311 wire twister pliers, and a few other goodies. $53 total.

Another **** for Jim_No_Garage's CM 150.

And Outlaw gets one for his $20 haul at his "expensive" sale. Think I'd have paid that for each of the fishing pole and the 1945 Coleman stove, but $20 total? Strong!!

Family reunion this past weekend, so was out of town early; did a little antiquing, but not spending.

Clauss scissors $1. I have lots of pairs already, but I can’t say no.

All right, I finally got a few minutes to photograph and post last Friday's finds.

First stop was advertised as a "machinist" sale and there were two large Kennedy machinist chests pictured for enticement. The chests were empty and there were no precision tools on the tables worthy of being kept in them. I got some new brushes and a Keuffel + Esser (K+E) 3237-2 Adjustable Scriber for $5 and beat feet to the next sale.

05 Aug 22-1.jpg

It was a neighborhood of Garden Homes--no lot lines and almost nowhere to park. I was late and there was a line... Happily, when I made it into the garage, there hadn't been much interest in the "old" tools. I spent $12.

05 Aug 22-2.jpg

I was pleasantly surprised to find a few more Walden Worcester Ford tools since I had just picked some up last week.
- Ruelle Industries Screw Chek'R, branded by The Eastwood Co.
- Simonds mm/inch pocket rule w/conversion table on back
- Mossberg A-I (or is it a 1?) Adjustable bicycle wrench
- Two Indestro Auto wrenches
- CM DBE
- Two Perfect Handle tools from H.D. Smith & Co. I had sworn off monkey wrenches since I got about 25 in a box a couple of years ago, but since it was an HD Smith, only a buck and was related to this thing I had never seen before I said why not. The pickle-fork-looking thing turns out to be part of a Valve Spring Lifter. See the HD Smith No. 20 (1920) catalog page below. There was very little chance the hook portion was left behind because, along with several other old tools, the lever had an info tag wired onto it. Apparently the PO bought it that way. Just to make sure, I went back to the sale on the third day--only to find it had been a two-day sale.

The WW wrenches found are another--but later--5810 Connecting Rod wrench and a 1620 "Tomahawk" Triple wrench. The third is an unmarked T wrench and may be a WW or a Packer "Ray". I'll have to read up on the WW and Ray threads--they're on the Sticky!

Interesting to me is the 5810 I found last week appears in the 1919 WW catalog and this week's find--with the socket attached by the side and eliminating one of the bends is found in subsequent years, but both these tools are stamped Pat Pend. I'll have to read up on the WW and Ray threads--they're on the Sticky! :bitchslap
I like the older plain steel over the flaky chrome. Also noteworthy, the stamps are inverted wrt each other.

05 Aug 22-2c.jpg05 Aug 22-2e.jpg

This is a comparison of the Tomahawk and what may be an unmarked Ray Triple wrench.

05 Aug 22-2b.jpg

Close-up of the Smiths. The Valve Spring Lifter has Perfect Handle Patented forged on the reverse.

Yep. Nice find. Rarely found with the adjustable chain and hook. I would dearly love to add one to my H.D. Smith collection, but I've never even run into the half that does occasionally turn up, which are almost always identified as pry bars.

Oh, and we do have an H.D. Smith thread. You know the rest!

I will send you mine, just to eliminate the self inflicted pressure of trying to find that damn hook and chain. Then you can have the pressure.

One sale today was a cross town, phase 2 of a sale I attended a month ago. There is more NOS Craftsman than most stores in their heyday. Another full hour in the blazing sun, many tools were too hot to touch, too hot to hold onto. I ended up spending a few bucks and came home with this lot:

Nos craftsman professional pick set 😱😱. I have been watching for some in the wild. I really like that lineup of professional handled items. Too bad they did away with them. Did the sale have more craftsman professional tools?

Two sales today. The first--just down the street from me--produced nothing but disappointment. The CM tool box shown in their photos seemed to be full of tools but in reality, was just a few large bolts and nuts in the carrier.

The next was one of those early 50s houses whose quiet street became a major thoroughfare. Now it has a tall noise abatement wall in the remnants of its front lawn with no immediate neighbors and no street parking.
Most of the hand tools were randomly placed in baggies. When I found a baggie with several Millers Falls drivers, I recalled seeing a lone MF driver in another bag. The agent kindly allowed me to switch a beat up Xcelite for the MF. I thought I had five MF drivers but failed to notice through the bag the doppelgänger in their midst--that's the "Professional" with no other markings, but a similar colored handle. The MFs are the 950 series found in the 1974 catalog. Rounding out the bag is a Champion Pat'd wood handled driver and a little Pseudo-beehive with no markings. $6 for each bag.
The other bag I chose contained the Plvmb Wright Field-21 ratchet, and two Challenger 1/4" tools, a P-10 ratchet and a P-34 hinge handle. Looking through the available catalogs, I didn't find these two model numbers. I've just read through the Penens vs Fleet vs Challanger thread and although interesting in its effort to explain why the various brands had the same tools, I can't say it gave me any insight about the age of these items. They are labeled Challenger only--no PENENS or Proto riders.

There were some flat blade screwdrivers at $8-12 each. There were 3 rows in the driveway like the first pic.
If you are interested in the hook and pick set ,we might be able to work something out.

Got a carpenters box along with a few odds and ends for $30 today. Don't know much about saws but the other stuff in the box for my attention.

Vice was apparently made by the guys dad. Clamp is Korean, Van Camp level, Stanley bevel, Stanley plane.
Edit:Korean clamp has brass jaws. PXL_20220811_174128417.jpg
Misc random stuff, metal block has imperial diameter measures so it's probably for checking thickness on rods. Don't know the age on the rest of the stuff but presumably it has some age.PXL_20220811_173942385.jpg
Misc stuff again, don't know what the steel block on left side is but now I have 2(pexto and one forged half an hour east of me). Left most screwdriver has an adjustable split shaft to change the thickness of the blade, right most is a two fister.
PXL_20220811_173500373.jpg
Misc pliers, Mac wrench, and chuck keys. Nothing too interesting other than the pipe wrench that slides by using your thumb and pushing/pulling on the little excess material on the back, plomb side cutters, and oxwall multi tool (mini hatchet, screwdriver, hammer, pliers).
Edit: pipe wrench is a Victor 1903. Took awhile to uncover the name.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

When checking for interesting sales last night, I found two. And each of them was at the far edge of what I will generally travel, in the opposite direction from each other. So, I strategized about which one would be best to hit today, as I had a doctor's appointment at 3:50 pm. And, I have another one at 11 am tomorrow. So, I check what hours and days they will be selling, check all of the pics to see what is possibly on offer of interest to me, both from collecting and reselling perspectives. And I made the call to head to the southern listing, a family-run affair closing out a Mopar machinist. So, after breakfast I head down that way, getting there about one hour after the sale was supposed to start.

And I say supposed to start, as there was... nothing going on. So, I got online and double-checked the address. It's the right address, right time, so, what gives? I go to click on the contact info, to see if I need to get ahold beforehand (something I never do, and it would have DQed the sale for me) and the info comes up as deleted. Funny, the ad was there a second ago. Go to check, and deleted. And now I am pretty salty. This is why I hate family-run sales. There is nothing else going on in the area, and I missed the other good sale! See, the other sale is now two hours north of me! And, I told my wife I would be gone until my appointment, so, what the heck, I decided to drive to the other sale!

So, I head out. I stop halfway to get some Gatorade and find out that Coke hasn't delivered for three weeks as they don't have enough workers, which is pretty sad. And after that detour, my phone decides to make me drive the most idiotic way, just to save what probably amounts to one mile. And what I thought would be two hours away turns out to be three, as the sale is on the far side of the city, way the heck out in the country. So, I am thinking to myself "this better be worth it" Well, I will let you be the judge of that:

Here goes.
Two railroad books from the 20's and 30's:

A small, vintage hex socket set (look familiar?)

Blackhawk socket box from the '30s:
52280244325_0d2618cafc_c.jpg
has the set number on the end
52280028189_5b04a33a7b_c.jpg

The completely surprising find was a Stanley 45 plane with two sets of cutters and all the accessories:
52280251980_5c723f6270_c.jpg
In the original box:
52280035044_3d0d77135c_c.jpg

And the object that originally caught my eyes, but I was sure someone would snag it before I got there, a Walker Turner GR50 1/2hp bench grinder:
52279765271_12d5534a47_c.jpg

I will say that I spent some money, $158 altogether, but nowhere near what I could have. And I might go back on Saturday, just to see what I can turn up.

Oh, and in the bottom of the Stanley box, I found a small catalog from '27:

Rivet set.

Look up the videos on how to use it. Too hard to explain.
Thought so but haven't had any need to run any rivets so I hadn't looked into it too much. Think last time was before I found the forum so I only had a description to run through Google and you can guess how well that worked.

The most shocking part of the whole story is not the fickle family sale, not the lengths we will go to complete "the mission", but the fact that they still had all those treasures five hours into the sale! You ****, Beemer!

I'm making a 45 minute drive myself this morning on not-too-much evidence of reward.

Thank you, everyone! It was quite a day. And, to top it off, I made it to the doctor with just minutes to spare.

3Bay, I thought it was going to be a Thorsen, but no luck there. I hadn't thought of Walden, so I will look into that now.

And, with a few seconds to look into it, I have to say "good eye!"
52280994134_4da5662c7d_c.jpg
Nothing on it is marked, and there is no label on the case, but it is definitely that, and what's better, I have the missing parts! (maybe)

When you mentioned you bought those at a sale I immediately envisioned a pile of nos at Sears close out prices. Looks like the guy had a ton of stuff at eBay prices and knew what he had. Since I am looking for a user set I would feel bad about using that brand new set! I am sure you probably did well on the price as that set would probably be over $100 on eBay. I do appreciate the offer though!

Seriously good rebound from a poor situation caused by folks not caring about others time. That’s the worst! Nice pickups! That grinder matches your drill press!

I attended an estate sale this morning hoping to buy an Omega watch from 1966. I was successful at that but I also found a few other things. I have no idea what the Panavise with spring loaded frame is for but at $5 I couldn't leave it behind. I also spotted a small plastic tool box marked $8. I wasn't expecting much but when I opened it I spotted a Snap-on stubby ratcheting screwdriver sitting on top of a bunch of other tools. Of course I grabbed that as well. Turns out there was a set of Bonney metric combo wrenches, Snap-on ignition wrench set, mostly Craftsman sockets, a bunch of unmarked wire cutters and ratchet accessories including a couple of locking extensions plus several unrelated tools.
