Yup, there are saying I was pre diabetic two years ago, then last year I was fine, now this year I am off the charts diabetic. I know my body reacts poorly to certain things, one is stress (don’t have much of that), two is lack of sleep (Chuck let’s me sleep as much as I want), three is diet (Covid has destroyed my taste and good food smells as bad as poop). By the time I get a new PCP, I will probably be in a diabetic coma. As bad as my numbers are, I think I can clean them up and be back to normal in a few months, all the carbs I have been eating are just turning to sugar since I get hardly any exercise, I have also been tired enough that I have been drinking things like Mountain Dew, then there is the ice cream bars that are easier to eat than anything, then the red meat, I have been eating way too much of it. Anyways, it is just another piece of drama I can add to the pile. Only good news is that I was 290 pounds, last year I was 325 and up.

Strouty,
I am a type 1 diabetic, and I have an insulin pump... my A1C is checked every 6 months to give an average of how good of control I am keeping my blood sugar levels.
If you are checking your blood sugar levels, you need to do it when you are fasting, ie, haven't eaten any food for 6+ hours.
I don't know that I would worry too much about that for right now, because is more likely to cause stress which drives up the blood sugar. Testing at the wrong time will show some high numbers.

The best things you can do is eat in moderation, drink plenty of water, and get some light exercise.
That doesn't mean you need to quit eating steaks, burgers, etc, just eat less of them at each meal. Try to cut out the Mountain Dew, that's just sugar your body doesn't need. Try to implement some fruits and vegetables.... I prefer apples for fiber, and grapes every day.
For exercise, you don't need to over react. IE, an hour on the treadmill isn't going to be sustainable, nor is it very fun. Instead, focus on getting some walking exercise every hour that you are up and moving. It might be that you walk the length of the driveway once or twice each hour. Likely only takes 5 mins, but that bit of movement gets your heartrate up, and can be done wherever you are. If you're out running errands, park in the far away parking spot, and get more walking in that way. It's far more sustainable.
Get a Fitbit, or similar, and start to track your steps. The goal is at least 250 steps per hour for 9 hours a day. Especially try to walk after a meal rather than sitting.

The "good" thing about being diabetic is that you are in control, and you definitely can control your destiny. I have been diabetic for almost 27 years now. I have been on an insulin pump for 24 of those years. Do I have perfect control? Heck no! But it's decent!

This doesn't have to be drama, just make some gradual changes over time, and you'll be for the better.

Good luck, and if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them!

On glucose monitors you might want to know they are not all created equal. After reading this chart - https://diabetesed.net/how-accurate-are-glucose-meters/, and studying the cost of test strips on Amazon and Ebay, I switched from the Verio my doctor gave me to the Bayer Contour Next, and the Agamatrix. When the reading gets over a hundred the Verio consistently reads about ten percent low compared to the other two.

I have ordered an A1C test kit and a blood glucose meter (bayer). I figure I need to understand this **** and since I have no doctor yet, it would be at least helpful to see what is going on. I am expecting that even though my A1C was really high, it won't be that way for very long. The last three months have been non stop stress and very little sleep, I have been dialing back projects and tasks to get stress levels under wraps, I am also ready to deal with a better diet, Chuck and I will be eating similar things now. Since Chuck has his own space, it has already made things better and I suspect it will continue to get better week by week. I will keep people updated as I go, I always seem to do that anyways, even when it is TMI. Thanks for the advice and thoughts, I am sure I will have questions as I go.

Between yesterday and last night Chuck was all screwed up, totally my fault, he ate around 5PM like normal, but then I went to bed at 9PM fully expecting him to wake me up around 10:30 or 11PM. He slept until 1:45 AM, so I fed him and went back to sleep, cumulatively I got 10.5 hours of sleep last night, I needed it. He woke me up again at 7:30 to be fed, then went back to sleep, I had to wake him up at 10:30 and he was grumpy, very grumpy. I may need a pair of gloves to handle the half asleep Chuck, he definitely nips harder when he gets woken up and you try to get him out of his den. We are at the Hill now, he is playing around his room, I have to go and get some food for me, I really don't have a lot of good food, so I have to pick up some things or risk eating too much junk again.

Also have to deal with my Medical Card and the next tenant at the camp, on top of that, the renter that I had for the winter has found a permanent place and isn't going to stay there this winter, I am happy for him, he has a couple kids and having a stable place will be better for them too.

Apparently they are very good climbers, they will climb trees to get leaves and fruit. This particular Chuck is definitely a good climber, better than he is at digging.

Strouty, I test before my 3 big meals and should before bed [and my slow acting insulin shot] but I am lazy and routinely max out my coverage so I cheap out where I can. For learning how your body is going to react to certain foods, an education class I went to had us test before our meals and then 2 hours later (the average maximum rise, for most). The results will surprise you, a bowl of cheerios with 1/3 (by visual volume) bran cereal (strictly for the fiber) with Rice Milk (beverage I have switched to Soy now, as it is more Protein and less carbs) was about a 5 point rise but adding some whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a no sugar added jam was the desired 3 point rise. [Canada uses some Metric numbers that are WAY different than the US]. So more food meant less rise, why? The protein and fiber from the peanut butter and the Sand paper bread...I mean whole wheat. lead to a slower sugar rise which you absolutely want, the spiking high and lows will give a good A1C but you will be hungry all the time and probably angry as well, If your new doctor when you find one isn't listening keep looking, I had one that looked at my A1C and said Nope everything is excellent. What an educated *****! I found an internist [endocrinologist] that listens and I can sometimes actual feel ok now. However I'm betting you like I have been afflicted with a body chemistry that doesn't use our insulin well thereby keeping us very hungry all the time I experienced feeling full maybe 3-4 times before the age of 55-58 not easy to control your numbers when all you can think of is food, and I recognize only 3 food groups, Fats, Sugars, and Health food the 3rd is to avoided at ALL Costs! [LOL] So start reading up there was a lot of information out there, but I have found that it is getting harder to separate the wheat from the chafe as there is LOTS out there now not all good watch the sources you will easily get a handle on this. As part of that group that oversees both Canada and the USA's licencing sees fit I now need a yearly Diabetic Assessment for US compliance but since I am using fast and slow acting Insulin I am not allowed to drive a commercial vehicle in the US. Confused so am I! Get those numbers down as the yearly diabetic, and every 3-five year medicals and eye test get time consuming and expensive real fast. Again like Kent offered I'll answer any questions I can, PM or public. I don't seem to be getting on the web as much as I used to but I do try and catch up so, Please be patient with me. Harry

Little chuckie is starting to develop a personality to me even though the forum!
I mentioned that they can be good climbers early on. Seen one scurry right up a tree. Of course it might have something to do with the dog that was right on his tail.

I have been looking at fiber and carbs on things. I did find some tortillas that have 5 net carbs, they didn’t even taste that bad. I had some shredded cheese, spinach, and salsa, tasted great, although I miss my cheddar jalapeño wraps. I just had some celery with peanut butter, I was feeling hungry and water wasn’t cutting it.

I am waiting on Chuck before I go to bed, but I am fading fast, might see if shaking his smoothie bottle will wake him up.

From my own experience, I found that the cravings for pasta, bread, carbs, sugar, change when you modify your eating habits. It is a little miserable for a week or so as you wean off the carbs, but once you do, the desire goes down. Also, changing the type of carbs helps too.... the super refined white bread, fast food buns, etc will burn thru your system really fast, then you are hungry again and the cycle repeats. We buy a thin-slice organic whole wheat or "seedtastic" bread that I use carefully.
When you get a chance, check out "insulin resistance". Dr Berg on Youtube has some interesting videos.

It really is about changing your mindset and then updating your daily habits for an overall lifestyle change.

Also, it helped me that my work sponsored a wellness program called "Naturally Slim" that is now rebranded to "Wondr". It's a half hour video to watch every week (12 weeks) and it helped to understand the science and the psychology of weight loss, behavior changes and diet.
You have to find the "why" in doing it.... We all can talk until we are blue in the face, but you'll have to internalize your "why" that will help you make the necessary changes.

My "Why" was my 3rd class medical for flying. It is way harder to get a medical certificate if you are diabetic. When I found out that I was pre-diabetic, that was a kick in the shorts to work on figuring it out. It also took me awhile that I need to change my ways to have weight loss and increase in health.

I think we all want to see the third payloader get picked up and some motors and loaders get swapped around!!! back to your adventures!

At this rate, the third loader will be the last thing that gets picked up this year. I can always drive in state writhing 100 mile radius of my shop without a medical card, but that limits my acquisitions significantly.

I am trying to get Chuck motivated so I can get to the Hill and do a couple tasks before I go grocery shopping, I have hardly any food that fits the bill for the new lifestyle and I know I will need snacks, so I have to get some things. I am going to call it the Chuck diet.

I'm just trying to get in shape and trying to find decent snacks has been my problem. Trying to find "clean" (less than 20% fat, not too many chemicals), reasonable carb, higher protein snacks is tough, and expensive. Trying to get my diet to about 15% fat, 40% carb, 45% protein, and make the carbs complex. This worked great for me before. Between that and hitting the gym at least 3-4 times a week (the goal is 5 days) got me in the best shape of my life, at 45. Anyway, back to loaders, knuckle booms, Sir Charles, and boats.

It is funny how expensive it is to eat healthy unless you own a farm or have a large garden. The worst part is that if everyone ate healthier, medical costs would be less expensive all around. Never going to win that battle though.....

I use either OLE or LaBanderita tortillas. Tastes great to me. 4-5 net each. Bread is available, not cheap though. The brownberry stuff is pretty good. I've got a couple breadmaker recipes also, they taste awesome when hot, but have a bit of a chewy texture. Lower carbs is a great way to go if you are having sugar issues. My experience anyway.

It's very hard to do this in the winter. No matter how pretty a "wintertime" tomato is, the flavor leaves me disappointed. This was my mid morning snack yesterday after a 1/2 a delicious cold cut sammich with garden tomatoes for breakfast.

Blueberries (wild native off our property) stuck into peanut butter. My hillbilly version of jam without the massive amount of sugars.
Another impossible food in the winter.

The thing that screws me up is the I do not eat:

Tomatoes
Eggs
Onions
Any nut that looks like a brain (brain nuts)

Covid side effects have made it impossible to eat these foods:

Garlic (anything with more than trace amounts in it)
Turkey
Fish
Turkey
Beans (legumes)

I am also lactose intolerant, not that it stops me, but I have to think about it.

Covid killed pizza due to the sauce having garlic in it, so I have not had pizza in many months. I usually don't drink anything but water and unsweetened iced tea. When I am tired I would drink a mountain dew (maybe 2 liters a week) or a caffeine energy type drink (they tend to have no sugars though). I love vegetables and fruits, I rarely drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I don't do any type of drugs except advil and tylenol ;)

This really screws up a lot of easy meals that keto, atkins, and diabetic meal plans tend to provide. After starting to really look at the boxes of the foods in the house, it was clear as day why I was having issues, the net carbs were off the charts when you account for my serving size. Hopefully switching things up will keep my hunger at bay and I can decrease serving sizes substantially.

My friend describes his diabetes diet, as . . . "If it tastes good, spit it out." I just cut out sugar, salt, butter, and soda.

Good luck.

My food bill actually dropped on Keto. The higher fat foods are cheaper usually. The low fat stuff that everybody seems to think are more healthy for you, actually usually has added sugar to make it palatable enough to eat. I could go on for days on this diet. There's so much bad info out there on diet that can be directly attributed to government involvement that i could almost get in trouble going on about it.

That said, i'm very sorry the effect that Covid had on your taste. You are definitely the person with the longest lasting effects that i have heard of. I lost smell for about 2 months. I never had a gag reflex on anything.

The things that you say you can't eat are staples. I love a good breakfast burrito. Gimme eggs, yum!

Sorry man. I feel for ya. :(

Something similar happened to me... but it wasn't a side effect. I suddenly became allergic to a few things in food that totally turned my body against my body. I had to go on a 6 month "elimination" diet. Worked with my pulmonologist and allergist and gastro team. It turned out... I'm allergic to "Cooking Oil" or several of the random ingredients in cooking oil. Also allergic to Avocados. And get this... I'm allergic to BUTTER. It's been about two years and eliminating just those three things Cooking oil, Avocado, Butter... I've been able to add back most of the things I "Thought" I couldn't eat anymore.

I'm currently working thru the ingredients of cooking oil to determine the culprit. Turns out... Sunflower Oil, Safflower Oil are very bad for me.

Had blood tests up the wazzu to verify the suspects and it was mostly confirmed.

Butter is sooo bad... the Mrs can't toast her "Buttered Toast" in the toaster oven.

Feel better... nephew has the "long version" ... now suffering from chronic bronchitis.

The elimination diet. Boiled chicken legs or wings. Roasted in the oven afterwards with some salt and pepper. Raw veggies ... CLEANED then boiled. Potatoes... same.

No oils, no sauces, no butter, no frying. Nothing processed... if it's in a box in the store freezer = you can't eat it.

After you stabilize... add one food and see how it goes for a few weeks. I don't mean... add a chinese buffet... too many things there.

In addition to all that... I also took Nexium every day for the entire 6 months of the elimination diet. Things calmed quickly as soon as I stopped eating processed foods and oils/butter.

Speculation flared all over the place... SOY allergy... NUT allergy... PROTEIN allergy... it was all rumors that did not prove. I eat peanut butter a couple times a week now... no issue. I can no longer eat at a mexican or chinese place because of the cross contamination.

Well scrolling to the third page to find this thread is just wrong.

Chuck, do your human a solid and let the man sleep! It just might improve YOUR life as well!

We need an update like a fish needs a bicycle. Well, slightly more than that in real life. But since this is GJ Life, we want more actually!

From what i can tell, it grows organically based on how interesting the content. Cultivated channels seem to grow a lot faster. I know there's a lot of income potential there, but not sure anyone would tune into my ugly mug! Ha!
how do I find you and Stroutys content on youtube 86? I have been watching bulletproofs stuff.

I have owned three boats, I gave one away, I paid to get rid of one, and I made a few bucks on one, I wish I had NEVER owned a boat.
my place came with 2 boats. I smashed the fiberglass bass boat with the loader and took all the pieces to work to put in the dumpster. I haven't decided what to do with the aluminum one yet.

dunno. I am 86turbodsl-garage or something like that. i have been watching bulletpruf channel too. he gets the video issues figured out, he can go the distance. I like the no-nonsense style. I can't stand the guys that walk around in circles talking about their project while they film their face. think thisoldtony. It's the way.

For Strouty, search for The Salvage Garage and look for pics of Chuck.

For 86, search for 86turbodsl Garage and look for videos of garage doors and waste oil burners.

Thanks for watching my channel! I have a few more videos on the way.

I'm subscribed to Strouty's and 86's channels, but can't access at work. I can post links after work if no one answers before then.

Lol! Not so much there right now. I keep talking about filming more vids, but i have nothing but a phone at the moment. I think you need something better for any sort of quality.
