I have a small shed with a single doorknob on the entry door. I want to put a locking type on it, that will need a key to open. I want the type that, when you push the knob in on the inside to lock it, The setup stays locked like that even when you open the outside with a key.
I got a schlage set but every time you unlock it with the key it pops the lock button on the inside to unlocked. Is there some name of type of lock operation I should be asking for ? Thx.

You are looking for a Storeroom Lock, they are always locked from the outside,a key will always required to enter. There is no key required to exit.

I buy mine from a distributor, big box stores don't stock them.

Maybe. A storeroom lock function is always locked on the outside. This leaves you without the ability to leave the door unlocked, should you ever want that choice.

Entry locks come in two different styles that I've seen. edit: (it seems there are a lot more than two when I consult the charts).

There's the type that has a turn button inside that the OP's Schlage. With these, the key directly turns the button inside, so you need to re-lock the door with the key when you exit, or at least turn the button before you close the door. I too am not a fan of this style.

Also considered an entry lock (so this can get confusing) are the types with a push/turn knob inside. With the type I have, you push the knob till it clicks and stays, in to lock the outside. Turn the key, and the knob pops out, leaving the door unlocked. Push AND TURN the knob in, and it stays put, acting like a storeroom (how I usually use it), but you can still manually turn the knob to pop it out leaving the door unlocked.

I'd suggest you see a locksmith.

Thanks. You understand my situation. Alas, I am not going to get any help at the "big box" stores on this , and many local locksmiths dont even have a storefront. I was looking for a keyword so I could order online. I dont know why this is difficult as I have another shed that already functions like I want.

Did you look up the brand of the locket on the other shed? Maybe you can get another keyed alike.

If you take the lockset off, maybe there is a part number?

Well, there are ANSI function codes you can start with. Those can be looked up with the manufacturer.
You'd be using the table under "Keyed latch bolt locksets, single cylinder"
That table has FOUR different functions listed under Entry, though not all manufacturers offer every option, and most of the lines in the chart will only be available in commercial lockset lines ($$$).

Here's another function code chart with descriptions that may make the wikipedia chart make more sense.
What I have is an F109 with a push/turn inside. And an example of F109:

With the F109, when the button is pushed and turned, it stays in, acting like a storeroom, allowing you to pull the door shut and lock yourself out. A similar mechanism is found in a dormitory lock, except those buttons pop out when the door is shut, preventing a lock-out.

You need to move from a tubular lock to a cylindrical lock. The feature you are looking for is a Schlage A53. Pushing the button in will cause it to pop out when the key or inside knob is turned. Push and turning button in will keep it locked all the time but always allow egress.

Thanks for all the good advice here. The "other" shed I referred to is in another city so I am not able to look at it right away. But the key info here was the push, or push and turn action of the lock knob. I was able to check all the display locks at the big box store and none of them had this function. I chose the style of knob I have due to its larger diameter; easier gripping. It appears from the online pics that the action I want is not availabe in the large number of knob/handle styles such as the big box has on display. Maybe I will have to find a real locksmith.

Yup. Cylindrical locks are too "commercial" to be found in most box stores. Anyway, the A53 shows an ANSI F109 function.

Commercial locks in any style imaginable are available, but are usually special order. Good luck.

I’m in the lock business so let me know if you need help finding something or a recommendation on brand, models, etc.

I think I understand what you want. However, my question is why not step up to a keyless lockset. I got the Schlage set pictured on sale at Menards and put that on my shop door. You punch in a 4 digit code and it beeps and the door unlocks momentarily. Of course you can open from the inside anytime. The outside remains locked and you have to re-enter the code to re-enter. However, if desired, there is a quarter turn knob on the inside that can be turned to keep the door unlocked.
