I picked this up today, it was on the shelf amongst all the other gas cans, I assume this is a knock off of the VP gas can. It was $25, which is about what Ive been paying for a Midwest 5 gal can plus a high flow nozzle and vent kit.

Anyone already running this can, its is durable, and worth the $. Have you made a higher flow nozzle for it, or can you buy them ?

Looks like its made by Plastic Product Formers

It's marked "no gas", right? That probably means the polyethylene isn't fluorinated, so not resistant to gasoline.

Yes, I've been using those, too. They have the same can but in red at some Menards locations.

These jugs have been great for me.... so far.

MUCH better than ANY newfangled vent-less gas can that I've ever used, with a spring loaded nozzle that takes 3 or 4 hands to operate.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I bought mine at Tractor Supply Company for roughly the same price as Menards.

The label on the cans that I bought were different.
The label said: "Plastic Product Formers White Square 5 Gal Utility Jug is not for fuel used on highways"
The label also says: "For racing fuel only, such as Nitromethane or Methanol, used in sanctioned motorsports"
(copied from the Tractor Supply website to make sure I got it right. lol)

On a side note, they are $21.99 at TSC.

Yes, its marked " no gas ". My guess was they where distancing themselves from going the way blitz did ( sued out of existence ).

Interesting, so if its not resistant to gasoline, how will it fail ? Good for diesel then ?

Thanks for the share, I did not see red ones as an option at the store I was at, I do have a TSC local to me, I will check them out, if these work, Id like to buy more and retire some of my other cans.

It's not clear if the jug is made of fluorinated PE or not. The "no gas" labelling may be just playing it safe around liability regarding vapor control dispensing. They do assert it's good with "Automotive and Industrial Fluids", which almost certainly implies hydrocarbons.

Is there a polymer code molded into the container? High density polyethylene (HDPE) is recycling code 2. If the material is fluorinated HDPE, or some of the newer ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) + HDPE coextrusions, it's probably going to get coded 7 for "other" polymers.

If it's not tolerant of gasoline the tank will probably soften and swell a little. It would likely do the same with diesel, but probably a little slower.

Yes, cast into the bottom is " HDPE 2 "

I suspect the plastic is the same for the white or the red version other than the color additives. There is probably some law that a gas can has to be red.

Let me do some checking to see what code is given to fluorinated HDPE.

HDPE *should* be OK for gasoline..... but the tubing in the lid would be super-suspect for gasoline. Gasoline is a nasty solvent.... even among nasty solvents. I've had tools that saw carb and brake cleaner regularly without trouble, yet gasoline turned the handles into silly putty.

I can't speak specifically for this exact brand, but most likely it is just fine for gas.

All of these jugs are now labelled "utility" jugs because back in 2006, California threatened to sue every single motorsports retailer in the US for selling gas cans to California customers that are vented to the atmosphere (or opposite of whatever they call the stupid ones that don't work).

Ask me how I know (happen to own a motorsports retailer since 1999)

At the time, we are very small (still not a huge company) and only had records of shipping 3-4 of them into California. We promised to not sell them into California without a warning (and just didn't allow sales shipped to CA for a long time)

I am sure larger retailers went after the manufacturers of the jugs for support/help.

Shortly after that, they renamed all of them "utility" jugs instead of fuel jugs. They are still labelled that way today, even the VP ones.

Hundreds of racers are hauling thousands of gallons of fuel around in these every day.

I bought the same jug from Menards ($25) but mine is red and was labeled for fuel. The clear spout is not too bad, the vent on the handle helps with the fuel delivery. Overall it is a good gas can especially now a day when every other gas can is basically junk.

I only use genuine NATO cans and I buy them online. They have a sticker on them that says something about not for gasoline but it peels off with no residue and then you fill it up with gasoline. That’s the way around the silly CARB rules.

I suspect that’s the same thing going on with the cans the OP posted.

Unless you're using it in a racing application, you won't find anything off the shelf that flows much better. Typically, with most jugs the vent is the limiting factor.

I bought this can also from Menards. There is a phone number so I called it. The guy told me it's a bunch of ********. It only say it's not for gas because of California freaking laws. The guy answered the phone say BP. I ask is this the refinery he said yes. 877-515-1733

I've been using a red one all year for gas. I have enough containers for diesel or I'd buy some clear ones as well.

My only complaint is the hose is a little long. But it's easily snipped if needed.
