about six months ago, I was trying to clean up and I got moving too fast when an axe, a sharp one, feel on my toes from about 4 feet. Luck would have it that the dull side of the axe hit my toes. I lost almost all my toenail on my big toe but it grew back. It hurt!
Get well quick! Good post for the rest of us. Always work methodically and think "safety first".

I think we should pull your man car for first wearing flip flops and 2nd calling 911. 
I have a pair I wear in public showers (deployments, gym, etc) and I feel pretty gay wearing them even then!

ONLY times I wear anything but leather shoes or boots in the shop is when Im working on my bicycles.
It just FEELS right, working on a vintage bike in flip flops, shorts, and no shirt
Just this evening I had the rear wheel on the truing stand to tighten the spokes a bit. I took a 20 mile ride this afternoon, and was pretty sweaty getting home. Took a shower, threw on some shorts, and flip flops, grabbed a drink, and went straight out into the shop to work on the bike a bit.
It just FEELS right, working on a vintage bike in flip flops, shorts, and no shirt

I was out in the shop today for some time. I didn't think anything of it, but I was wearing flip flops...
I decided to cut up a 4x4 with a circular saw and didn't think anything of it until I got a bunch of splinters under the strap implanted into my foot. And I thought THAT was bad.

I read HOTRod magazine and the editor Freiburger ALWAYS wears flip-flops - not matter the task! Engine work, paint work, welding, it's amazing he hasn't been hurt and even more amazing someone hasn't stopped him from doing so!

this thread should be called, not paying attention and garage safety... flipflops should have been sufficient footwear for you job, had you picked the door up the way you knew was right.

I have only recently been wearing flip flops in the shop mostly just because there easy to put on and off running into the house and such. But Im think Im gonna put an end to that now.. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your adventures in the healthcare system, Jeff. Glad to hear all of you should survive. What are some of the sayings that haven't been said yet... If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough! Good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgement!
If I do any heavy work around the garage, I wear a pair of steel toe tennis shoes from Wally-World. I got them for doing chainsaw work when I realized how hot steel toed boots were in Florida at 95°.
Maybe this is just a sign to slow down and relax. Its a big weekend for Nascar and some stations are carrying marathons. Hope you are back on your feet soon.

Instead of having them take the nail off just drill a small hole through it and it will let the pressure release,feels a hundred times better.You still loose the nail eventually but it gives the nail bed time to dry up and it doesn't hurt as much when the nail comes off.Jammed my thumb nail a month or so ago and the whole nail turned black instantly.I drilled a 1/16" hole through it with a pin drill to release the pressure,felt great afterwards.The whole nail fell off a week or so ago.Doesn't hurt at all.

Man i hope your up and about soon, i broke a pinky toe once still hurts to this day, dont beat yourself up that could have happened in ur driveway i take my jeep doors off all the time and worry about dropping them there not the easiest to handel, as far as working in the garage with flips on ive done it but its a pain your feet get filthy. hope u recover quick .

Instead of drilling a hole in the nail to relieve the pressure, you can heat the point of a safety pin with a lighter until red hot, then just touch it to the nail slowly and it will melt right through. You'll smell like burned hair for a second from the keratin in the nail, but it will sizzle when you get to the blood underneath - stop there, pressure will be gone shortly.
Man, that's a nice little wound you have, hopefully it cures up well and fast without infection.

Hope it heals fast. Yep another victom of gravity, I too have learned the hard way and wear steel toes boot most of the time (which really should be a standard for married men).

I wear nothing but flip flops down here in NC so it doesn't bother me at all. Then again, I don't usually stare at peoples' feet while I'm eating either.
I sure hope I don't drop anything on my feet. I've been wearing flip flops during the whole remodel I'm doing. Oh well, at least then I'll have a reason to sit on the couch and buy tools.
