Working like it’s for a living again *****, huh?! Ha ha.

Good on you Don for helping the man. I’m convinced it goes into a big book somewhere the scores are kept. And if it doesn’t? Well it still makes the neighbor want to do more favors for you! Win-win

Thanks guys
I've been working with my SIL this past week trying to get some headway on the El Camino.
Last week I got the power hood to work and made the cover for the right actuator and hinge.

So far this week we have the left cover made and installed along with figuring out the steering column distance from the fire wall and driver seat which meant reinstalling the dash running into LA to pick up the steering column and cutting the double "D" shaft to length
As long as the dash was out of the car it was easy to install the air conditioning unit to the sub floor that I built last week.

Next we went to work on the seats. They are bucket seats from a 1964 impala SS. I wanted the power units from the original El Camino seats but they aren't working well enough so we just went forward making new mounting brackets for the impala seats

We finally got the seats mounted where we want them so today we started building the custom interior for the car

This is the look I'm after

2014-01-20 18.03.54.jpg

So we worked on the frame work for that look today

2022-08-04 16.41.11.jpg

I finally got one close out panel cut fitted and welded into the car

Damn, that's going to look SO good! This El Camino will be an absolute show truck.

Ok, I have a dumb question because I have no real fabrication skills. Do you have to go back with additional spot welds until the weld is solid or is it good enough as you have it since this isn't really structural? I assume you'll smooth and blend the welds, skim it with filler so it makes me wonder.

Yes it will Dan
The welds you see are all it's going to get. The welds and seams will go away with a little bondo and a lot of sanding. What you see is going to be painted so it must be smooth as a baby's ****
Ok you might said what it is and I miss it. but them dash gauges look like 59 chevy ?
Yes Vernmotor
Those are the gauges and dash from a 59 / 60 chev. sitting in my 70 El Camino

That looks sharp, Don.

Any more thoughts on final color(s)?

PS: Just a (probably dumb) question: I’m definitely NOT any sort of body guy but do you ever use fiber infused filler? I THINK it’s the stuff referred to as “kitty hair”? Does it have a valid use or do you feel it’s an excuse for not doing better metal work?

Hi Dan
Thanks for dropping by
Yes I've used Kitty hair when repairing fiberglass. That's what it is for. When filling metal I'm using a product called RAGE It's a type of bondo filler

Thanks for the thought Farmer
It does look like something that I would like and I do have one
Don,
I just picked up a double sided Alemite sign and stand a few weeks ago in real good condition. The lady who owned it in the past used it as a display stand in her business for 30 plus years to hold a quilt.

Well I just got home from a 3 week cruise all around the British Isle and down to France
The cruise was V E R Y relaxing. The food A poor C- We did made a few new friends (car guys).
The highlight of the trip was the visit to the Normandy beach in France (very touching). This trip puts a new meaning to the word OLD with all the structures still standing from the Renaissance time period and the history that goes with it. Very interesting but alot of walking up and down the hills

Got some real bad news while away. Seems that the neighbor borrowed my grounds keeper one morning to trim his olive tree.
Not happy about that
While working on it he fell out of the tree from about 10 feet in the air and landed on a planter wall breaking his pelvis. Now I'm out of a good employee who did everything I needed around here from all the heavy lifting to keeping my place look like a well groomed park.
Then when we walked into the house late last night I found a flooded kitchen. Seems that a water pipe in the wall as sprung a leak so a call to the insurance co. was made and we are waiting to hear back from that.

This jet lag is an interesting thing that is holding me in the house today while I regroup.

Ugh, sorry to hear about your guy. Is he going to be ok? How old a man is he - that usually determines how much/if he comes back good as new.

Be careful what YOU do now that you're missing the help you usually have. Don't get yourself hurt trying to do stuff you'd be better off getting help with! Best of luck, Don.

PS: We visited Normandy a few years ago. SO very touching to think all these men (many of them still boys, much more so than men of the same age today) gave their all for us to be free of the scourge Nazi German represented in those tough tough days. God bless them all.

Don, that sounds like an incredible trip! Too bad you had to return to such a mess
at your place without the services of your trusted employee. I hope the cleanup goes well, water can make such a mess of things! I hope your guy heals up quickly and is without any lingering problems.

Sorry, about all of the bad news. I was just thinking today that I had not noticed any recent updates.
Thanks for the visit Bird
I'm always nervous about letting everyone know when I'm leaving for vacation
And that's when Murphy always hits lol
Yikes. I hope your guy recovers quickly.

Hi Dan
Well we hope he will heal OK he's in his late 30's. I miss him already after yesterdays work load
Normandy is a hallowed place for sure. I found a tear in my eye while there.

The trip was my wife's idea , I did enjoy the time off and time well spent with her.
I got the wall opened up and found that Rats have been chewing on the new plastic water lines I had run after the last water leak a couple years ago. The insurance doesn't cover rats in the attic issues so I fixed the pipes myself yesterday. Now to dry up the wall before fixing the drywall .

After spending the morning working in my dining room cutting holes in the drywall and finding the pipes that were chewed
I put sleeves over the pipes to plug the holes. Then found a fan that will dry up the dampness in the wall before the mold sets in.

IMG_8979.JPG

Then headed out to the shop to work on the El Camino but got stopped in my tracks when the wife grabbed me to clean up the patio because Jose will not be here and she is having company from Australia visiting this week.
After lunch I remembered that the last time I had the Zephyr out was when I had trouble loading it from the trailer in Escondido and i'm taking it to a show in a couple of weeks. It also had a couple of rattles that I needed to find.
So rather than getting all involved with the El Camino I thought it best to fix the Zephyr. I lifted up on my 2 post lift

2022-08-27 15.26.22.jpg

Found the problem with unloading the car from my trailer. A cover plate that protects the master brake cylinder caught on the bar of the trailer and was bent down about 3 inches. It needed to be bent back up and welded where the plate was cracked.
Problem was that I needed an extension cord to plug into my generator for juice for my welder. So off to the containers I went looking for a heavy cord to use. Found one without the right plug for the spider box that is fixed to the generator so back on the hunt til I came across what I needed. After putting the cord together and bringing the welder out to the lift it was a 10 minute fix
I beat the end of the skid plate up over the cylinder bolts, welded up the far side and tacked this side.

IMG_8977.JPG
The went after the rattles. The exhaust mounts were loose and the cushions on the bands around the front mono spring were deteriorated so I took them off and cut rubber hose to replace the cushions on the bands then reinstalled them and the rattles went away.
Tomorrow I hope to spend working on my El Camino.

Smart on not advertising being away.
Zephyr looks good and good to see it will be back out on the road.

Absolutely. That's something no one should EVER advertise.

Kills me when I see folks on FB posting "I just checked in at <fill in the blank>".
Ok, now I know you're not at home and how far away you are.
Good God!

agreed! I learned my lesson as a young homeowner when I went to China for a month for work and posted pictures every day I was gone. I had a roommate I rented a room to so it wasn't like no one was home, but he wasn't home much. Came home to find someone had broke their pick while trying to get in my back deadbolt and my side door was all torn up from a crowbar in the jam and dents from trying to kick it in. Luckily commercial quality locks and steel doors kept them out.

I never post anything about any trips till they're over now. I was furious when everyone from our wedding started posting us happy wishes for our honeymoon since we kept our wedding date completely off social media.

Sounds like a great trip Don and one that's on our list!
I hope your helper mend fast and well.

I 've wondered about varmints chewing the plastic water lines and you're the first one I've heard of this happening to. We've had them chew through the fuel lines on two of our vehicles and just recently they took down about 100' of outdoor party lights.

People are saying the plastic coating used these days are like crack for squirrels, rats and mice. Hopefully a solution is being worked out!

I'd say Welcome Back but it just feels wrong in your scenario. :dunno:

I have that same problem, I want to work on one of my projects in the shop but something else always gets in the way. Maybe some day I'll find my way back to the shop.
Jim
You are just too popular in your neighborhood not to mention your talent or willingness to give back
I managed to spend the afternoon in my shop today

Shorty
You are right about not telling the world that you are leaving the house unattended.
The Zephyr is growing on me I think that I might start liking it soon. Still a feminine color on it though

You are sooo right. Social media has opened pandora's box to the world.
I'm not on anything but here as far as social media goes

Yep Sam
You have no control over others and what they don't think about.
Don, my dad always said " if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all"
Yes Tony
I've heard that too!! Things could always be worse
Murphy is always ready to strike

The cruise was a welcome time to recharge my batteries but more important was spending QUALITY time with Ann
The water problem is just part of owning property so no big deal just a big P I T A
I'm very happy to be home Thanks

Uncle Willie
I'm not sure that it is strangers that take advantage of your absents It's more like a poor friend of one of your friends that take advantage.

Had a dentist appt this morning and 2 1/2 hours later my mouth hurts worse than it did when I went in. (Had a root canal on my back molar)
The good news is that My helper sent a friend of his over to clean up my front yard and he will be here 3 days a week until Jose gets back on his feet

So this afternoon was my free time to work in the garage (on the Al Camino)
I should have worked on the interior to get it finished but while in the dentist chair all I could think of was how to make my engine compartment look better. So when I got home I hit the shop with an idea to clean up the ugly lines on the stock fenders

IMG_8988.JPG

Since I don't have those ugly hood hinges any longer I can hide the support lines on the fenders
So here is what I did this afternoon

IMG_8983.JPG
I had to build it so I can remove it to get to the head lights so I will have 2 filler panels (front & rear)
I'll build the rear panel tomorrow I hope.
