Double-pan balance. Those were old gear (but still in use) when I started working in industrial chemical and coating labs in 1979.

I’m not used to seeing replaceable weights out in the public use areas. When I was a kid, the hardware store public scale had moveable counterbalance weights. I expect those weights stored in the boxes to be more of a scientist usage, or jeweler (kinda big). Assuming that’s ten # capacity.

What is the shape inside the zero of the 10? A feeding chicken? Maybe for small amounts of pet feed? Or is that actually a Kg?

With that columned front piece, it will be quite the looker. Assuming cast iron?

Might be a Remadja brand from googling images? So maybe rice sales.

Yup cast iron. No brand name just the 10kg on front. That remadja looks pretty similar

It's a lovely old big balance scale for weighing bulk products, and would look good cleaned up. Mrs Farmer J worked in a hardware store when she was a teenager and sold nails, food for pet rabbits all kinds of bulk stuff weighed out in scales like that.

The design details on the bottom frame and the graphics of the 10kg emblem look like non-US production to me. Vaguely Asian. Double-pan balances have been around for a long time, and are still sold today.

Any chance that one isn't a relic after all, but rather mistreated more recent production?

Take it down to the hood and sell it to the, ah, hum, local "green grocer". Make sure you have ounces and gram weights which I have heard from a friend are the preferred measurements.

I don't know how to post a link. English Salvage has yours listed for $64. Ref 25597. Just says it's vintage.

I would be very careful with blasting all the crud off. I'd try to keep it looking old. I bet it's usable in it's current state.

I have some old scales but this one is nicer than any of mine.

A balance measures mass, whereas a scale measures weight.
(the balance would work the same on the moon or mars)

At least you repurposed it. lol, it's cool and that you have the weights is a plus.
