We recently had a crawl space roof fire and will need new truss structure and roof...this means all ceilings must come down including the garage.

My shelving as seen in the pics is just 2x4 and plywood hung with all thread and is approaching 30 years old. The garage/shop is used to weld/paint/restore etc and I was never concerned with the looks.

Question is, if you had the choice to modernize shelving and cabinets and not break the bank (me paying, not the insurance) what would you choose and could you post pics?

I have Gladiator shelving and cabinets, the welded ones for the cabinets (Premier line) not R-T-A bolt-up kits. The shelves come in various lengths and depths, ones you would expect to use in a garage are 2,000 lb/shelf, 4 tons total load for most of them. Finding them on-sale you can save considerably. I went to HD recently to buy other things and the Husky brand were $300 apiece for the similar shelving. That's about $100 more than I paid for my Gladiator shelving for the same size. Look at the 'heavy duty racks' in the link below.

Costco often has a similar product. They don't use bolts/nuts, but if your floor is smooth/level, you won't have any issues.

A tip on the use of the wire-shelf surface floor racks: I cut masonite to fit the dimensions of the shelf, so I can slide things on and off the shelves easier. Cut the depth to fit above the wire surface and not over the front and rear structural bars. You want the masonite to fit in the space snugly so it stays in-place when you're putting something on the shelf and sliding it, or removing something from the shelf, and sliding it off the shelf.

basic stud shelves are easy and all the weight is on the floor instead of suspended from your ceilings.
I built the cabinet boxes in the middle of the second pic and they and the unfinished kitchen cabs are hung on french cleats on the wall. The white cabinet doors are melamine-coated particle board with euro-style hinges.
Maybe $800 for those shelves and upper cabinets. What's that, 3 of the premade hanging steel cabinets folks are suggesting?

Unfinished kitchen wall cabinets. No they won't hold 10 gallon paint cans but they do a good job of holding all kinds of other stuff. If you need some heavier storage either reinforce those cheap cabinets or get a heavy duty shelf unit just for the heavy stuff.

I use 1x3 for the frame of my shelves covered with 1/4” tempered hard board. I make the shelf to fit the space rather then the other way around. They clean easily are very strong and I‘ve made them in 12, 16, 18 and 24” depth. On the pictured set I used the 1x3 with vert inside filler. These go up quickly, don’t cost a fortune and should you move you can have the shelves down and stacked in short order.
