All that waiting stinks. When I bought a snowblower on CL, the seller had a buyer, but the next day I got a call saying, "... the buyer should have been here an hour ago, Do you still want it ?"

A deal's a deal. Your seller was foolish,; he could have lost both buyers.

For your viewing pleasure, a mortally wounded Chinese Wilton:

Reemo on Practical Machinist said:
Heres why NOT to buy a "new" Wilton.

Broke after its 3rd use!

This was purchased at Lowes. Horrifying quality. All pot metal. Rust UNDER the blue finish.

Note the shrink wrap still on the anvil section. It was brand new when it broke holding only a small car part.

I would be sure to make Wilton aware of how cheaply they are made. Maybe they would change their design a little if they get a few complaints. They will never be what an original Wilton was but they could change it enough to make is a little stronger

After seeing yours, I'm pretty certain Columbian made my Ridgid vise:

Gentlemen,
Apologize for no pictures, however, I have three vises that I consider "mine" and only one bolted to a bench. Three Wiltons Actually. A 3.5" Machinist Vise bought new 3 years ago, an identical 6 or 7" Wilton Machinist Vise, owned by my dad, in need of degreasing and a paint job. Nearly forgot a USA made Wilton is "like" a wood vise on one side and you flip it over to find about a 3 or 4" set of jaws. This is NOT the Junk Chinese Wilton sold at lowes/HD and painted blue. It's gray, in 95% condition and will be mounted to one of my benches when the shop is ready...

THAT SAID, Why I made this post is the lack of Brockhaus Heuer German Forged Vises. I was going to buy a 4" with swivel in 06' until Samstag Sales increased the price by 60%. The ******* the phone gave me good pricing, said the vises were in stock and ready to ship. Could not find my credit card. Called back 9 minutes later but the "****" answered the phone, and you'll pick up on him quickly if you ever call, inflated the price and denied the preexisting deal. Figured what the hay, it was chickenshi*t, however, the euro was rising and I really liked the Forged Vise. Told him I wanted the 4" Vise, Swivel Base, and maybe an adjustable vise ram that goes under your bench when not in use. He came back with $1600 plus and could not guarantee the price unless I order right then... Told him "no thanks" and that I dealt with German Imports as a day job so the Euro Inflation was way out of line as I kept/keep an eye on the currency markets...

At any rate he had no personality and I have some price limits so I bought the Wilton for $330ish.

That said there needs to be another Brockhaus/Heuer Dealer out there. He is the only one I can find. Here are some pics...

My first post here, couldn't resist joining in. :)

Hope these work okay. The first 2 photos are my Wilton USA 3" found at a garage sale for $18. The next photo is my Grizzly drill press vise.

The last photo is the vise I use the most and it is a "Kingcraft" 5" Chinese vise-shaped piece of metal. Paid maybe $30 or $40 new at Aldi in 2004 maybe. I don't use it much except for holding metal for cutting or welding.

Steve

I picked up this Wilton for $40.00 at the flea market a couple of weeks ago and had the paint sandblasted and then repainted it and cleaned it up. I'm looking for some jaws though but have a hard time paying $55.00 for 4 inch jaws when the vise only cost $40.00

I'm 99% sure you are right. The Ridgid I gave A_Pmech was made uncannily like a Columbian.

I have to see if I can find a set of steel jaws for mine. I have the aluminum ones which work ok, but sometimes I could use more bite.

The Columbian ones look different than mine.

How do you get the back plate off the Wilton bullet vise's? I see two pins one on each side, how do you drive them out and are they reusable, Thanks

Yeah there are two pins on the back. I pounded one pin in with a punch and then was able to pull out the one with pliers. Then I drove the other one back out the other way once I got the first one out. Not sure if there is a better way but that has worked for me on the two I have taken apart. I have always reused the pins as well. As for the bottom cap I just used a long wooden dowel once the pins were out and hammered it out.

Here's my contribution. I picked up (oooooffff) the Charles Parker ... it's in remarkably good shape and is now cleaned, oiled and ready for service on my bench.

Can't find any age indication...any guesses?

Take the dynamic jaw out. Drive each pin towards the center evenly and then pull it off. It was a PITA until I figured that out.

Here's a Parker you won't see too often. Its a 434 1/2A which I believe was made after Union vise took over the rights to make Parkers. I had a 474A which also was made by Union vise Co.

Look at your calendar; it says 2010, that means that if you want a HEUER vise at your door for a good price you'll have to buy it in Germany.
You could start by putting "heuer schraubstock" in the search engine of ebay.de and see what they offer.

Re: Question about vise

I have been handed down a made in England Record 6 inch bench vise. What is the purpose of the spring?
Thanks

scarrylarry

It's a "quick release" of sorts enabling you to quickly snug up the jaws.

It kinda looks European really.

I'm guessing it is a high quality vise, especially at the price.

Thats a nice looking vise. I guess Wilton has to make a design change to keep our interest in their new ones. God knows they are having a hard enough time selling their conventional ones with the tremendous used vise market out there. I think if its made here, Wilton would proudly stamp it somewhere, if its not stamped USA anywhere, its then not made here. It doesn't mean its made in China though, WMH is based in Swizerland and has manufacturing plants around the world. It might be European made.
