Here is my little haul from today. There was a city wide barn sale at the town south of me. Previous years have been great, but the good junk being dredged out of barns and garages have gotten thinner. Most of todays vendors came to downtown, and set out their wares. This all came from the very first stop.

The box was in a free pile, the MAC driver in a $0.75 box. Chose not to dig thru the various buckets looking for various pieces I might need. Found the Porto Power type spreader in a random box. Rated at 1/2 ton, hoping it will fit my 4 ton vintage Porta Power, have not looked at the fitting on my cylinder to see if it will work.

One of the ears is broken off on the pivot, so hope it works.

I think the box originally held 1/2 drive sockets, based on the grease stains. No name on it, but a bit of a shadow of a decal, may try to determine the Shape later, see who it may have belonged to.

Had to drive through traffic caused by a couple of yard sales in town today. No sign of anything but LOTS OF clothes and some housewares, so I didn't bother stopping at either one.

As I wandered around the valley over the weekend I would often see a garage sale with something to draw me in; I am not on the hunt anymore, but curiosity dies hard, as we all know.

Anyway, here are my finds:
52348836877_dbc42f9cb0_c.jpg
A travel guide to central Asia from the '70s, Snap-on box full of misc. puller parts, a live center in MT2, a neat little reamer, large marking gauge, vintage reloading dies, SK line wrenches, and Mitutoyo telescoping gauges.

Estate sale find from an outdoor sporting goods shop that has been out of business for many years. Lots of vintage clothing and some gear, quality brands but older. Not really my thing although I was tempted by some nice waders but the fear of cold, wet feet from unseen cracks caused me to leave them behind. My main reason to go was from the 1 picture of the garage/workshop area which showed a vise and some tools. The picture was not great but the vice appeared to be a Wilton mechanics vice (aka Tradesman). I have missed out on some nice vices in the past but I was 30 minutes early and was 1st into the shop area. Went straight to the vise and got my grubby paws on this nice specimen. A 5" Wilton 1750, made in USA, mfg date of Feb 1973, lightly used with no damage or abuse. I gave it a basic disassembly and cleaning, may do a complete restore but it will be a user not a shelf sitter and I kinda like the current look.
Before and after pictures.

While the vise was my favorite item from this sale, I also picked up stuff from SK, Snap on, Starrett, Craftsman, Williams, Coleman, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Colt and few more I'm forgetting at the moment. I'll add those pictures after sorting and clean up.

Nicely done on the big Wilton, wtn1271!

I randomly checked Craigslist this morning and spotted an ad from the next town over with a bunch of pictures of "Dad's tools, ready to move them along". I needed something to get me out of bed (it's SWMBO's turn to be away on vacay this weekend) so I made contact and established a meet-up time.

Dad was a machinist in a corporate shop, and I soon discovered that everything had his name inscribed on it, sometimes in multiple places. However, I still made a pile with the swivel combos and other Snap-on goodies and asked how much.

"Oh, about $50."

"Uh, I'm thinking $20. The rust and owner's marks really decrease the value."

"I was thinking you'd just be using them."

We settled on $30.

ndc=no date code
Swivel combos
Snap-on ON30, ndc, 15/16"
Snap-on ON28, ndc, 7/8"
Snap-on ON26 ndc, 13/16"
Snap-on FHO 24, ndc, 3/4"
Snap-on FHO 22, ndc, 11/16"

Snap-on FHO 16, ndc, 1/2"
Snap-on FHO 14S, ndc, 7/16"
W.T. Grant, 9/16" (he must've really liked this one--he tagged his name in 3 different places)
S-K Tools FC-24, 3/4"
S-K Tools FC-20, 5/8"
S-K Tools FC-14, 7/16"

2 no-name, USA-made wire cutters

Snap-on OEX-18 combo, ndc, 9/16"
Snap-on OEX 160 combo, ndc, 1/2"
Hazet 605 19mm combo

Snap-on 1/4" ratchet set in case, 1983 & '84 date codes--is complete, unless it's missing a ratchet

I haven’t hit up a sale since before the plague

Wife and I drove though a 40 house tag sale yesterday.

We didn’t even stop, where in the past it was a favorite pastime

I dunno, something has changed w wife and I or maybe we have what we need, maybe we have too much already

I miss those days

Sorry to hear about that! The old plague has definitely been a force of change in many areas of our lives for sure!

Speaking of before the plague- anyone heard from jakemac? Dude used to always be on here posting gs finds.

The large marking gauge is often called a panel gauge. Looks good. Love my live center.
It is a nice one, and dirt cheap too. I bought it from an estate company that has zero idea how to price tools. I dislike them, but I can often find such a bargain that I will check them out if I am in the area.

And I needed a new live center as the tailstock for my new lathe is MT2 and not MT1 which I used before.

Nice deal, BlueBomber! Extra point for Hazet wrench - I never saw one in the wild except for 9-12. 8-13 older V-10 combos... Either people tend to keep them or there is not much love for Hazet around MA...

Those are my favorite "Vice Grips" - I think what killed them as a product is the little slide that adjusted how much tension is applied. - just forward of the release lever hinge pin. if set low they are useless, if set high, they work great!

They are not so early; maybe 70's IIR?

One handed use, adjusts to size automatically. I have used the very tip to grip "stripped" bolt heads and used a wrench on the tips to remove...

I've had one pair almost 50 years, and a few years back bought a second pair

The blue "handle" is prone to crackling and breaking, I wire wrapped mine, and painted the 30 ga steel wire with nail polish to keep it in place - Still good after all these years...

Thanks! All the Snappy will go up on eBay and will more than pay for the two sales I hit up (see below).

Thanks, Shelby. That Hazet was out of place amongst all of the domestic wrench in the box, and I knew the name enough to recognize potential. Alas, it doesn't seem to be the valuable wrench for a Porsche or VW tool kit. It'll go in the metric drawer.

So, a rare double for me as I hit up an estate sale while out for gas. It seems the stations two towns over are 90 cents cheaper per gallon than my home town! At 20 gallons into the truck, I still came out about even on the $15 I spent to get the items below.

Windshield washer fluid-- it only had 2" in the bottom, and I emptied it into the truck's reservoir before I pulled away.
Full can of CRC starter fluid
Partial can of Gunk degreaser
Summer 2-amp water pump--nearly 30 years old, but looks almost new
Chinese-made mini bolt cutters
Exhaust pipe tool--because I couldn't find the one I already own when I needed it last time
Dayton 120V time switch
4x 7/16"x48" wooden dowel rod

And made it home before the rain started! Life is good.

Nice finds gentlemen!

Smoke- I’ve been wondering for years why Jakemac left the thread. Others who left too, years before the bull ****. There used to be a few heavy hitters that suddenly dropped off. No hello every now and then guys? Throw us an Oxwall ignition wrench post once in a while. Something, anything, to at least let us know you’re still alive and well.

Never got around to posting my last auto swap meet finds. A few odd items in there.

-Eifel Plierench with one jaw
-Hazet lug wrench made for Mercedes
-Driver brand open end wrench (my second found recently and third in total)
-Simanco odd scissor style lifting clamp? Pretty neat piece. Lifts with quite the bite. Doesn’t seem to fall in line wih the usual Simanco products, and can’t find anything about it on the web. Maybe Lugz has seen it.
-Pasco nut cracker faucet socket
-small unbranded pincers. Not sharp like end nippers. Seen a lot of these over the years but don’t know what they‘re from.
-two mystery Kent Moore sockets. Maybe if I post the numbers the sleuths here can help me figure them out.
-Proto Phillips socket

Well, I don't want to speak for him, but people's interests, focus and even circumstances change. I still like DBE wrenches, but I rarely even check my own DBE thread, much less post a bunch. Maybe he's in stealth mode...

It entirely understandable. Some people aren’t bent on non stop tool hunting, even after years of doing it. Just interesting that not even a comment from a many former participants.

That’s a nice 1941 Eifel!
The small pincers are very good at pulling brads and tacks - head or not - with little damage to the fastened material, as long as a tiny bit stands proud, though you can usually get purchase on even a buried nail with just the corners of the jaws A579CBE8-DC19-4494-8AA2-57533E310ED8.jpegVery helpful when salvaging lumber.
17659A54-D95F-4601-A931-55916817AFF4.jpegGrip tight, then roll across one curved jaw as a fulcrum; 656855F8-CD1B-45C9-8CA0-0193AF7426AB.jpeglonger nails may need multiple repositioning against the material. 6034D427-1174-479A-934F-640AFBC2F6CB.jpegIt does impart a curve to the nail.
I have pulled hundreds, maybe thousands, of flooring nails, common nails, wood lath nails, cut nails, wire nails, staples, tacks. All from my own home renovations and furniture repairs.
Larger sizes good for larger nails. Marketed to carpenters and ferriers.
I love the pocket-sized ones.

Not to be confused with hardened-jaw nippers, which cut heads right off. 70F8ECFF-5346-403B-8928-5B7AF596D883.jpeg

Maybe 40 to 45 years ago my wife and I tore down a barn and salvaged just about everything, and used pincers similar to those to pull nails. We ended up with over 30 gallons of old shingle nails from the roofing boards and the layers of wood shingles that it had had over the decades. The real prize of the project, though, were the 4 main timbers, 10 by 10s that were 60 feet long and in one piece.

Nice. What numbers do you have? I have a 27 and a 25. If that 21 is a dupe, I'd love to trade you something for it. Lemme know.

Nope. Neat piece, though.

Had a bit of a dry run.

Saw an ad on CL a couple weeks ago, was interested, but wasnt goong to be able to find the time to head that far to grab it. Was reposted on Thurs, so messaged the guy, and grabbed it today. After looking it over, asked the obligatory "Got anything else for sale?" He showed me a small pile, and I immediately realized I had seen his other ads. Asked how much for a larger set, as I recalled it wasnt clearly listed in the ad. Price was right, so for $60, I walked away with the following:
3/8 Craftsman (H) set with postwar logo. Everything but the crossbar is there. (Original reason, $15 advertised)
3/4 -V- Pat Pend ratchet (think V2 of the QR?, stud doesnt extend apst the anvil) and 8 sockets (mix of =V= and -V-). Only one of each was a duplicate of pre-extisting set (He asked $45 for this.)
Edit, ratchet handle pic not working, says
Forged In USA -V- 44804
--Patent Pending--

Last week, stopped off and got some smalls, along with a "Modern Machine Shop Learning" set, dated 1944. Pics to follow.

Nice circle H set.

LS- nice collection. This little pincer is pretty much a toy. Small tacks and nails might be it.

Lugz- the Driver I had a long time is a little larger. No idea where it is.
The other I just found might be this size. Thought I posted it, but I don’t see it in my recent GS posts so maybe not. I’ll look around here.
The Simanco piece has me stumped. Has two numbers on it and nothing about it online.

Wow, I just flashed back to 35 years ago... I used a more modern version of pincers, about the size of regular pliers, for a few years in a metal fab shop, which made (and refurbished) electroplating racks for the jewelry industry. We used those pincers to pull studs (usually brass) from used racks before stripping them, then recoating and installing new studs.

Rhode Island had a very strong presence in the jewelry industry, but most of those companies have long ago offshored most of that work. This little fab shop is also gone, and the building was razed as part of the eminent domain campaign when the I-95 / I-195 interchange in downtown Providence was relocated a few years back.

I understand that most certainly. I used to be much more into vintage craftsman. I still am, don’t get me wrong but my focus has shifted to Proto empire

3bay, that Simanco clamp looks like a pallet grabber, only scaled down. I've used pallet grabbers to clamp onto the center spine of a pallet to drag it out where a forklift or pallet jack can move it around. They are pretty common for dragging pallets out of a box truck when you don't have a pallet jack to put into the truck, and there is no loading dock.

If it will grab a 2x board, it could be for pallets. If it won't open that far, it must be for grabbing something thinner, like plywood.

Spotted an ad for bench grinder on marketplace. No info, just this photo. Picked it up for $40. It is an exact clone to a Baldor 7" that I already have. All parts interchangeable. Photos before and after cleanup. It runs so smooth you have to pay attention to make sure it's running, Coast down is 7 1/2 minutes.

The garage saleing has been slow and I've been busy. But I like to check the restore whenever I'm near.

Five cardfiles for 15 bucks. They should cleanup nice and I'll need to figure out what to store in them.

Congrats! You ****! I've been on the hunt for one of those for a while.

I picked up this Albertson & Co. 1/2" ratchet this weekend.
I can't find much about it online. Looks like Albertson changed to Sioux Tool in 1967 so it's before that I think.

"Cleanup?" Was paint involved?

Either way, You ****!
