Exactly why I'd love to watch you work.
You wouldn't have liked watching me work today Toolfool
I was working on the El Camino. I pulled the front sheet metal off the truck and grabbed the engine hoist and pulled the motor out of the frame.

2022-09-09 15.01.42.jpg

All was going very well until I set the motor on a rolling cart, moved the hoist out of the way and started pushing the cart with the motor away from the truck when the wheel collapsed and the cart flipped over sending the motor to the concrete and splitting the transmission case in half. I was so upset that I couldn't take a picture. And now it's raining

bummer, I thought that stuff only happened to me. Hopefully you can get it sorted without too much trouble.
Lutz
The tag on the trans says that I had it rebuilt in 2013 so maybe I can just get a new case
Rain….in Southern California 😜

It least the engine didn’t land on you, that’s the important part. A little duck tape with fix the ******.
Yes Shorty
They promised us a huge rain storm with a couple of inches of water but it just drizzled all evening

Duct tape? you must have better tape in florida

I would just get a new case and swap everything over.

I grew up in Hemet so I have been watching the Fairview fire. The mainstream media and the
Weather channel were talking like y'all would be having to build an Ark. A years worth of rain
in one day. Yea you bet.

Thanks for dropping by Kelly
Yes the fires in Hemet are pretty bad and the hope of a good rean storm went away quickly when the time came and went without any excitement.

I'm thinking the same thing about the trans. Life goes on!!

Ah ****, Don. That accident TRULY *****. Especially when you were making good progress. Condolences!

As for that cart? I try very hard to be a patient person but I think I'd be pissed as hell and cut it into teeny tiny pieces cursing the entire time! Yes, irrational but somehow it deserves it!! Lol

Oh Dan
I can't do that. It is the cart that I keep my metal chop saw on. I should have known that it was too light weight for that motor
But hindsight is 20/20 you know.

Don, if it were me, I would get a new case rather than try to weld it together. Too many things need to line up perfectly and a welded case might not do it.

Just my humble opinion.

Shoot that is not good…….I imagine you have some very descriptive adjectives floating around Southern California on that one.

After licking my wounds last night I went out and took some damage assessment of the motor

So the thought crossed my mind "can the case be welded???
You can see the tag that has the date of 2013 when I had the trans gone through

J-B Weld.... :devilish:

Seriously... you could probably weld the case..... but, I think you would be better off finding a new case.... IMHO

As long as you don't plan on putting big horsepower in it welding would work. I have welded a few of them.
That was just my cheap *** first thought. But the 454 with Edelbrock aluminum heads and a mild cam with fuel injection a 700r4 may not be the right trans for that motor so It may be a blessing in disguise

I'm getting my head back together and our logic matches lol

Surprising Zippy
Not one swear word came to mind at the time. It was like slow motion as the cart started giving way and all I could say was "no NO NO"
It's in the past now and so I just went back to work on the truck as if nothing happened. Since I can't change it I had to accept it as done!!!

I havn't been commenting for a while, but I have been following this and some other threads. That small accident with the transmission had get me to go out in the woods for a long walk to calm down. I am not a car guy *), but I would not use that trans for anything more than showing it is a discouraging example.

*) I like to drive them and look at them, but I am not repairing them 🤔

Yep, I think you may be right. If it were a stock small block maybe but you have definitely crossed the line. Back in the day it would have been a turbo 400 out of a 1 ton with the heavy case. That's what I have for my 64 but I'm starting to think that I may use the 480LE, what are you thinking would be better in the El Camino?

Maybe because I'm in this stupid state I'd better get rid of that gas guzzler and go electric so I can help add to our electricity shortage.

(just had to vent)

Jim I agree the 480LE will be the best bet for me

***** about the trans, but since you are going with a big block the 700 will not last. I would go with a 4l80 if you want overdrive. A turbo 400 if not.
You are right Uncle Willie
That 700 didn't last
Wow, Don. I thought that sh*t only happened to me.

Murphy drops by here quite often

I don't get that excited any more. I think that I've grown out of it now. When I was young and in business it was a completely different reaction to these things.

The little air compressor is cool and will even even cooler once it gets the Long treatment.

I have a mildly cammed LQ4 in my '55 and it has a 4l85e behind it. They came out of a big flat-face Isuzu delivery truck with only 81,000 miles. We rebuilt both anyway but they were still pristine inside.

The guy that did my mechanical work claims the 4l80's require very little to handle big power whereas the 4l60's require quite a bit yet guys use the 60's because they're more readily available. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

I don't need any more projects but I just couldn't let that compressor get away.

I'll be calling around this morning for another trans so that will be out of the way

Over the weekend it was honeydo time.
Remember the water leak we found after coming home from our cruise?

1567629-f87cc6b09a94f7173d78c76259ab2721.jpg

A couple weeks ago I cut the rest of the drywall out to let the wall dry out.
so this weekend I replaced the drywall and mudded it up then let it sit so the mud could dry and today I get to paint the wall again.

UGH, I'm no drywall specialist. I only do it infrequently so when I do it there's plenty of do-over to get it smooth.

About the time I finish is when I've regained enough ability that it's THAT point I should have been before I even began! Lol

What spray gun will you be using,
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

The one that shoots drywall mud for texture

I'm with you Dan
I can do it. It's like smearing bondo with a big squeegee but I don't like it
Failed after just one launch. :(
Iceman
I have no plans to race the Al Camino just make it a show driver
I got some tried and true duck tape and baling wire.
Nice early gen Wilton and look forward to what the compressor becomes.
But Shorty
It's been my experience that even the best Duct tape is only good for 1 time use.
I didn't NEED any more projects BUT.
Sir,
What about JB weld for the transmission case?.........haha
I dropped the trans off at the ****** shop today and asked if they could weld the case back together (THEY LAUGHED AT ME)

My day started today with a call to the transmission shop and after a short conversation the truck was loaded and the trans was dropped of. The decision has been made to go with another 700R4 case because the truck will not be raced and an other case is readily available for $150. with my connections with a wrecking yard. The case will come to me empty and I will clean it up and paint it before the guts from my old trans will be transplanted. So on with the next challenge.

Next I went out to the shop and finished getting the Left fender ready for primer and by noon it was primed

2022-09-12 17.11.54.jpg

Dan from Pasadena asked if I have a color in mind for the truck and I have decided on a PPG vibrance color

2022-09-12 12.48.42.jpg

Next I went to work on a 4" wilton vice that was rusted solid when I took it off the shelf on Saturday
With a little help from some derustjuice I loosened up and today I was able to take it apart

...When one of my grand daughters was here last time, she wanted to help me out in the shop...

Hearing that kind of thing makes my day, Don.

(I would have given just about anything to have known either grandfather or to have spent time working with them. They probably would have too!)

Don, Outstanding deal on the trans case for only $150. Plus; of course, a ton of labor but still that's relatively cheap.

I like the color. Looks like there's a lot of metal flake in that color. It'll look killer good. Will you use SS stripes or other graphics? Or are those features TBD still?
