1/10th hour (0.1) is 6 minutes. Pretty easy to convert! As a professional pilot, I converted my logbook early on to the decimal system. I makes keeping track of totals much easier!

Score for today. Walked past early while she was setting up and I was walking the dog, saw the box, thought it was a cigar box. Got back later, it was still there, and I saw the GTD on the cover, figure it was going home with me, saw the tapered reamers, with brace bit attaching ends, and was expecting a high price, then saw a $5 tag. No doubt at that point. A #709 tapered reamer set, found in 1916-1928 publications, missing only the 3rd slot, guessing 3/8” without looking at each. Seller said it was her grandfathers. Wondered what else I missed.

Edit: it’s the 1/4” that is missing. Several were out of order.

Yesterday, when taking new dog out to a distant park to do some training, I stopped by a couple estate sales that were on the way:
52444986619_d16a186d02_c.jpg
Neither were too promising in the tool dept. but as I was in the area, I thought I would find something. From the first, the Beeman air gun cleaning kit, while the second yielded the Starrett indicator on a mag base, along with some Blackhawk sockets. $7 for everything.

Today, Smokeshow tipped me off to something nice, and I managed to find a couple decent sales on the way home:
52447320849_4cd5d64fef_c.jpg
From the sales on the way home, I picked up mostly machinist stuff, as that is what I am focusing on these days: A full box of taps, two bit tubes (very handy) an MT2 to MT3 adaptor with drift, 3/4" endmill, Lufkin Measurall tape, and an empty Miti-Mite box which I picked up as I have a Miti-Mite in need of storage! The Snap-on breaker bar and Chrome Vanadium socket came from the last stop. $11 between the two.

But what I left home for, and Smoke tipped me off to, was this:
52447487480_1855ff6e36_c.jpg
52447488800_0f57fb02bf_c.jpg
52447489410_8ffb29845f_c.jpg
A partial Blackhawk #10 set from roughly 1920. I have my work cut out for me to find the rest: ratchet, wrenches, etc. Some of the sockets are Snap-on strike overs, plus there are Mossberg, and a few others included. But it has both spark plug sockets along with the crossbar for them, the valve lap tool is there, and I might have a few of the missing sockets and tools in my stash. Not cheap, but very rare.

Well, I do most things in Base-12. Just count by knuckles.

Or, use a ruler.

Never thought of that before.

Extending that logic, if you count the bones in your fingers and metacarpals (long bones in your hand leading to the fingers), you have a great way to count 16ths (and 8ths and quarters). Probably faster than doing math in (my) head to determine what wrench to try when one doesn't fit.

Yes, I just thought of that...

That IS an interesting thought! I was aware of what bmw was saying (counting 3 on each finger produces 12; using both hands, 144), but counting 4 on each finger produces 16 (thence 256).

Do you mean hours or dollars (or both)?
I meant hours, but sometimes it feels like dollars. So let's say you make $24/hour. Changing a distributor cap is listed as 1 tenth in book hours, which is 6 minutes. You'd earn $2.40. Now if that's all you do that week, through no fault of your own, then that's all you make, even if you're present and waiting for work the entire time. That's flat rate. Good weeks you can beat the book and make more hours than you actually worked. Bad weeks, well that's the example above.

At a yard sale yesterday, I found a basin for my Bird Bath that a chubby bandit looking critter broke pulling it off the pedastool ($15)

$29 at Jake’s Flea this morning brought home a Keystone (Buffalo NY) hex ratchet, Union protractor; Parker No31vise; Bonney ballpein, LD20, A28 and E22 wrench; Stanley P2 P1 & Western Auto-branded P1 screwdrivers; a sleeve of Torx bits; Eberhard S-doe. I passed up a BHMCo 15/16x1” doe for $2, which I may yet regret.
Also Not Purchased:BEAFFF3E-0EFF-4FC3-B0A3-19F13829EA4B.jpeg
c1952 Philco TV/LP cabinet - I took the pic because my grandfather worked in the cabinet dept. I have no idea how many locations Philco may have operated at the time.

c1929 (Pat 1730980) Commutator Dresser Co Ideal EZ wire strippers. The complex action, which holds and strips wire insulation was pretty cool, but it was an early table, and an item I don’t need.

My parents had a TV much like that one. I could probably only truly identify it from the back, as I spent an inordinate amount of time behind it jiggling and swapping tubes and jiggling wires. My fingers hurt just thinking of those days.

Love that su
Bless me, father, for I have sinned, my last confession was... 22 days ago! Didn't really notice just how busy I've been with other stuff. (And, my cash was low. Low today, too. Almost didn't go for that reason. Had a ten, a five, and three ones and I grabbed a pocketful of quarters and dimes on the way out the door.) Today's trip (Lugz 2022_48) did not disappoint, though. Details later. This is an on-site (still in the PL) SITREP.

Top to bottom, left to right

- States Company nut spinner (the bit comes out, my second one in two months)
- Schier #57 awl
- Millers Falls awl with no-roll handle
- Wakefield adjustable bike wrench
- No-name hand vise
- 1945 Blue-Point DBE (1/8 x 3/16 Whitworth)
- "1/4 DOZ." (that's three for the math-challenged!) "Big Hand" No. 1 scrapers in original box
- mini utility knife
- BHM combination slip joint pliers
- Boker dykes
- Tinted shop glasses with debris guards are unmarked, nothing on the lenses or guards
- Sundial by Virginia Metalcrafters, Waynesboro, VA
Love that sundial.

I'd say that's a good deal!

The Snap On is a tubing / flare wrench, and that size is very handy for brake bleeder screws.

Mike
I know. I have at least 3 complete sets of flare nut wrenches in SAE.

I just couldn’t leave a $1 Snap- on wrench.

I left a good amount of basically unused Klein screwdrivers… that was hard to do… but I have more screwdrivers than I will ever need… plus. The amount of tools that I have… for the amount of work that I do… is getting ridiculous… or fun… we all see the world in a different way.

We went out of town "for a drive" yesterday, and hit one planned and a couple of TOO's The planned one was an estate sale and man, the cast iron stoves I had to leave behind! (No space in the trunk...). great prices too!

First TOO was great for Halloween stuff and I let others deal with that.

The Planned Estate sale was on day two of three, so a couple things I had seen in pics were gone, but I did OK:

I initially thought the brass thing was part of a wall lamp, but later realized its a bathroom holder for toothbrushes and either a glass or a shaving cup. my second Ronsonoil can this size, A TS miter, that fits my 36 Craftsman/Companion TS, a bell Loc,k a 6" MH" hacksaw, and a Ford wrench - that has most of its Paint/Japaning too.

ES1 Ford MH CM L fluid Lock Bath holder.jpg

I belive these are for holding CI pats in a hearth? -One has a a piece broke off.
ES1 Pot holders.jpg

Horlick's malted Milk jar:

ES1 Horlicks Malted Milk Jar.jpg

The sewing machine drawer was the last of the ES stuff - I think I may have 3 of these now? if I can get to 4 I'l make something to hold those 4. the driver is a SIMANCO (Singer) I found at another TOO YS. These are getting pricey!

ES1 Drawer YS3 SIMANCO Driver.jpg

Then today I hit 3 YS's - all but one were dead or nothing I was interested in:

But for the one, a Pellet (Not BB's or other "hard" ammo...) catcher:

Sun - Pellet catcher 2.jpg

Sun - Pellet catcher.jpg

Inside it has 3 "curtains" to slow the pellets: The red one, and 2 of these that look pretty strong...

Sun - Pellet catcher 3.jpg

A turkey call; and if its a deep fat fryer holder its tiny, and has a very short handle. :dunno:

Sun-Duck call deep fryer.jpg

And lastly, a Coleman jug: the cup is present, the insides look new, and nothing is broke or missing; otherwise I'd have left it -It should clean up decent, some of the "patina" is just dirt/grime:

Sun-CM 1.jpg

I was surprised to see a 1944 date code!

Love that sundial.
Thanks. Have to find a good spot for it in the yard somewhere. My kids always liked this one, on an ivy-overgrown cairn or stupa, of sorts, under an iron pergola in my side yard, also an old find.

Looks like an interesting character on the screen there. What show was playing--"American Pickers--Lesser Son's Flea Market Adventures"? :)

Outlaw, I think that Deep Fat Fryer cage is actually for toasting bread over a campfire.

Nice pellet trap, a lot more involved than what I set up in my basement though.

Mrs. Radar's brother and sister are both visiting for a couple of weeks, but I got them all the car for a few estate sales yesterday. While they all found a few items, I came up dry until the last stop--and even then...

They had this Williams Electrical Set 1285P as part of the contents of a tackle box for $5. The tackle box was full of hose clamps and some nuts and bolts--your basic dreck--and the tackle box wasn't worth talking about. I asked how much for just the 1/4" box, and he said I guess $4. I said "Really? $5 for everything and $4 for just this?" His come-back was "Well, it's a set." I then pointed out there are only two items that belong to the box and that none of these hex sockets belong in the set and the spinner looks like it came from overseas. (The Walden Spintite and the three DOEs were not part of the box) To my query--"How much for just the box and the only two pieces that belong to it?", he replied "Well we're trying to get rid of stuff." By this he meant it was a package deal. I set the box down and continued to look around. After finding nothing of interest but the drill stand (which I left behind), the Spintite, and the Dunlap and Barcalo DOEs, I went back and said I understood him wanting to clear things out and I would take all the hex tools if we could agree on a price for the box and the three other items. We settled on $3 and with 25% off it came to $2.25.
Alloy Artifacts has a piece on the 1285P here. Sadly, all I had in my spares was the single 15/64 x 1/4 ignition wrench, so I'm on the hunt. Again...
