After a glance at somebody's Japanese tool shopping the other day, I said "waffle grid pliers." Today I went into the shop and took some pictures to make it more clear what's going on with those Vise-Grip-like GW & Proto hose clamp pliers from a few years ago, and I'm guessing those non-locking Japanese hose clamp pliers, too:

1/2 inch drive stubby impact set and a flexible drain.

I bought a Form-A-Funnel several years back and after I had used it once or twice, I said to myself, "Squankum, have you considered keeping a small roll of aluminum foil in the shop? Wouldn't that be about the same thing and sometimes better?" So I got a roll for the shop.

Used it lately, and, nah, alumimum foil was kind of fussy and easily bumped into and taken off task for the thing I was doing. But certainly will have its moments.

Form-A-Funnel is very nicely made, thick plastic with a lead sheet inside as its moldable core. I was using it for a few years to keep the Durango 5.9 oil filter removal from dripping on a subframe when it splooshed/poured with velocity upon removal. I think I've since solved that problem with my "poke hole with spike into bottom of filter and have it shoot straight down for an hour or overnight" method, which then results in no sploosh when I remove the filter.

On sale at Home Depot for $99. It is actually really good, it impressed me!20221122_135309.jpg

I'm an air tool coot, and am currently resisting the Aircat version of that. When I first saw a pic of that, a cutoff wheel with the disc 90 degrees off from usual, I knew that just had to be awesome! But only just recently I have moved up from my $19.99 "Pit Bull" cutoff tool to a normal Aircat and while that cheap Pit Bull I bought as a goof* never did die, the Aircat is wunnerful, wunnerful.

________
* Amazon dangled it in front of me at $9.99. Shipping turned out to be $10. Still cheap.

I have a pair of the Gearwrench 9" and like them a lot. What I like most about them is they are locking so they can hold the clamp until it's ready to be put back on. They aren't available from Gearwrench any more AFAIK but ones like them can still be had from Eastwood or Mac Tools.

Eastwood 9" ($27) : https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-9-hose-clamp-locking-plier.html
Mac 9" ($47) : https://www.mactools.com/products/hcp901
Mac 7" ($42) : https://www.mactools.com/products/hcp900

I’ve really been shopping cordless ratchets and have been debating SO or Milwaukee but didn’t want to spend SO $$. I found this almost new for same price as new Milwaukee/batteries & charger. Since I’ve picked my platform, I’ll get the SO underhood light next.

Okay, since I went 14.4 SO for my second platform, after M18, I received my underhood light today. I needed this looong ago, I like it. I was just waiting to see what I chose for 12-14V.

I hope this is my last post in this thread for a while. 😐

That Aircat looks nice! I might have to add that to my list as well!

It’s a 2006 GTO with a 454” LS2/7 dry sump. I’ve spent a lot of time under that hood straining my tired old eyes. 😐

ETA; I call it LS2/7 because it’s a resleaved LS2 block with LS7 style heads & intake. The dry sump is by Daily.

I thought that's what it might be, but the driver's fenderwell didn't look quite right to me for some reason. I'm a fellow Holden owner myself.

Since you didn’t didn’t say fellow GTO owner, I’m assuming you have a G8 or SS. If you in fact have a “Holden”… which side is “drivers side”? 🤔

My drivers side (L) is missing the power brake booster. I don’t make enough vacuum for the PBs to work reliably so I’m running a hydro boost (Duramax) that runs off the PS pump.

The passenger side (R) is missing the top for the fuse box (I have an experiment with a TCM bypass going on there) and the ABS. The little aluminum bracket my dry sump vent tank is attached to used to hold a launch controller I’ll probably put back on soon.

Aircat is a FINE impact. Great Choice. Mine has been tortured for 4 years in a Die Maintenance shop; still performs as new.

The Aircat on my "maybe someday" list:

Astro also has some similar things for much fairer prices:

Aircat been berry berry good to me, but I also know Astro are good folks, too.

Huzzah! I have avoided Ko-ken fever for just a little while longer and bought the cheap, $8.99, made in China 1/4" female to 1/2" male adapter. The brand is uxcell. uxcell -- mark of uxcellence.

All four faces have these lines on them. An innovative design feature increasing grip? Naaaah! Gotta be a skipped machining step, and I don't know that I care. Faster! Faster! Cheaper!

Ball detent works, maybe a little firm, maybe some WD-40 in there will make it more cooperative.

IMG_0491.jpeg

Another pic of torque wrench, adapter, and socket. A lot less sloppy-floppy than a 1/4” to 3/8” + 3/8” to 1/2” adapters! In fact, it doesn't feel floppy at all.

IMG_0488.jpeg

The uxcell folks, maybe just for ux, will also sell you two of these for $8.99 on amazon, but I only needed one, and while I have some weird friends, I don't think any of them are weird on this specific issue and want one for Christmas. Given the amount of torque involved (see above pic of torque wrench) I am not worried about quality on this piece. No ragerts!

Where did you order them from? Germany? Wyoming? Poland?
Hungary actually, from a retailer that gets them directly from Knipex, but it would have taken me just as much time to order them from Germany or Austria. Chrome plated versions are hard to come by, the smaller size is also hard to come by. Combine that with the labor and supply shortage and you get 2.5 months (for the smaller one at least, the typical mid sized one arrived at the end of October to the retailer). They are not cobras where I can go to a hardware store and shove about a 100 into the shopping cart whenever I want.

OK. I recently ordered a big set of Knipex circlip pliers from a Polish electronics warehouse that stocks a lot of Knipex (but not, say, 2 foot plumbing pliers) and the price was outstanding and shipping very fair and the speed, unexpected.

I have the right angle Aircat; it's very ergonomic, a pleasure to use, and plenty of power

While we're egging each other on re. Aircat this week, I got this last year and it's a hoot:

I'm not qualified to judge it against other brands' air saws, as this is my first, but it sure seems smooth.

Well, the best place I found to order Knipex stuff is badplanet.at. They have the best prices, but there's a min. of 10 € shipping (locally, and it goes up with weight) so you gotta order a few pliers for it to be worth it. Their system is quite crappy tho. No updates at all, not even a notification about shipping. I had similar experience with j-kesselshop.de where I got a lot of my PB Swiss stuff from.

Squankum, those lines on your adapter is chatter, where the cutting tool was run a little too fast for the depth of cut, or sharpness of the tool. Probably forgot to change tooling at start of manufacturing shift or speeded up cutting to meet the shift quota. Purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect quality or function.

Got the M12 right angle die grinder in. Have a 1/8" collet and nut on order, but until then I put on a cheap keyless chuck to hold Dremel bits. Have a few 1/4" die grinder bits though...Bypassed the trigger bar lock so now I can wrap my index finger around the built in groove below the motor and keep the other three fingers on the bar. Two genuine Milwaukee redlithium XC 6.0 batteries are on order for $71 a pair. The collet nut on this die grinder is 9/16-28 thread. May pick up an old keyless 1/4" chuck and re-thread it to fit the die grinder for low speed operations. If that works, I'll get a chuck with double knurled rings for a fully tool-less feature. I already showed this the night I got it about two weeks ago, but now I have "action" pics showing how the higher-tier HF "Braun" LED worklight now has two pivot points, meaning you can fold it shut. I have since learned that this protects the easily-pressed button a little, and yesterday I noticed I can put it in my pants pocket. Big progress over the original.

IMG_0524.jpg

That being said, the original (single pivot, 180 degree swing) version that is so handy, it's that time of year -- this is the weekend to ****** one (or another one) up for cheaper:

One thing I like about these lights is that the batteries are easily sourced (18650) so a battery failure doesn't take out the whole thing, and you can easily find higher capacity batteries and a charger and swap batteries with ease, rather than fiddling with is USB port charger and waiting. Just unscrew the bottom cap, aluminum handle and threads, pop in your next battery.
