30x48x12 Pole Barn in central OH

Hello,

I have been reading on this board for some time, getting tons of great info and enjoying the impressive builds. I can finally post mine. I was originally going to start building about 2 years ago, but the builder/scammer is now in jail for fraud and drug charges (long story...). Anyway, my wife and I purchased 4 acres in 2007 with the plans of eventually building a house and pole barn, and buying an additional 4-6 attaching acres from the farmer we bought from.

I would have liked to have gone bigger (40x60), but I had to stick to a somewhat reasonable budget, so I decided on 30x48x12 to allow for a lift. It has a 9x8 door for my tractor, a standard 36" entry door, and an 18x10 overhead door. It is still a work in progress, but the actual building is up. Concrete should be in a couple weeks and then overhead doors and the driveway. I also plan on a loft over the 9x8 door area. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for looking!

I believe that is called a 'pan'.

John Deere 762 scraper, 13 cubic yard self loader, although it looks like the flights are jacked bad.

Yes, it is a pan or scraper. That picture was taken after a chain broke. They replaced the chain and a bearing, so it should be good to go for the driveway.

It's mainly all about snow loading in your area, and can be done differently even then. My 30x40x12 actually has it's trusses on 8' centers, but the trusses are made of 2x6's and the stringers in the roof are on edge between the trusses rather than flat on top.

I'm 6'5" 275lbs, for me its the sturdiness of the strapping while i'm framing, the truss guys will get the snow load calc correct.

The excavating was free in this case, but would have been about $300 from the pole barn company.
The barn inself (structure, man door, vapor barrier on roof and ceiling, permit, and labor) was around $12650
The concrete (4" reinforced with vapor barrier and 4" gravel) was $4995
The 9x8 door was $400
The 18x10 door was about $1100

I had W.C. Building put up the barn, another company do concrete, and I will do the overhead doors. I am very happy with W.C. buildings and would definately recommend them. I am actually looking into building a post frame house with them now.

I haven't been up there, but I would assume it is sufficiently strong. We don't get a ton of snow like Buffalo or Canada, but we got over a foot in a day or so this year. Also, at least one of the guys on the crew on the roof was a good sized guy and had no issues.

Given the wooden poles and wood along the exterior at the ground were they able to estimate at all the long term survivability of the structure? I know a lot of old barns were built this way and still standing after centuries, but im just curious.

I am in NE Ohio but just started to look for builders to come out and quote a pole barn similar to this. The price you got it for seems pretty fantastic.

I haven't gotten any inside work done yet. I am going to try to pickup the 18x10 door this weekend, but I had to order a new 9x8 door, the original one was the wrong style.

The barn is on 4 acres northeast of Johnstown (which is about 30 minutes northeast of Columbus). I live in Newark currently.

I got a price of just under $2000 to have the electric company connect service, so that is another step I have to complete before I can do much inside. Before they install, I have to pay the fee, install a meter base, trench a line, and install the main service box with at least one outlet.

I don't know long term survivability, but should be quite a while.

I don't know how far they travel, but I would recommend WC Buildings. Ask for Bryan Wolford and tell him Nick Irion referred you. They price pretty competitively and do good work. My wife's uncle had a much smaller building done by them and I am looking into a post frame home with them.

Its been a while, but I finally got the overhead doors up. The 18x10 was a royal pain in the rear to do by yourself... I still have to install the torsion spring for the large door, and the proper trim outside the door; then I will start on my loft over the smaller door.

You can disregard the high grass. It actually isn't right up on the barn like it looks. I do need to mow it, but I took the weedeater and cut down everything within a few feet of the barn.
