Looking for info on this era vise.

I know it’s PARAMO and it’s made in England. But approximately what era would it be? 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, etc.

And yes it’s huge. Weighs a TON!

Thanks in advance!

Hard to say, but they started making vise, I mean, vice's in the 40's. Is it a No. 6?

If you are thinking about buying it, they are well built and heavy duty. Weak spot is the center swivel plate tends to crack. You can tell by flipping it over and looking under it.

Well, I can tell you that F.Parramore and Sons were originally an iron founders, certainly in existence in the early part of the 20th century. They made all sorts of things, and I have a pair of sash clamps of theirs, that belonged to my grandfather.

I have read that they started making castings for Record when the Record forge was bombed during the war, but I have also seen old Paramo vices that are copies of Parkinson designs, and I wouldn’t like to say which came first.

Either way, by the end of the war they were turning out a good selection of high quality vices. The last Paramo’s I saw new were in 2004 - they were beautiful things, made from ductile iron and still to a high standard, so that’s the date range!

The 2004 vices were being sold off for just £149 - and I can’t believe what was most outrageous - the price of £149, or the fact that I didn’t buy one!

Sad thing is, if the firm could have held on a bit longer, Record would have been sold down the toilet, and they would have been the only “volume” manufacturer of quality vices left!

The good news is, if the castings are good, British made replacement parts are available - jaws, leadscrews, enamel paint, and even transfers with the logo, are out there!

Wire wheel it, paint the painted bits, polish the exposed bits, grind or replace the jaws and you have a top quality refurbed vice!
