Is finding a window sash lock and keeper supposed to be this hard?

For some reason I discovered that both sash lock keepers on one of my windows were missing. The room felt cold so all I could do was steal a sash lock keeper from another window in another room so that at least there is some tension pulling the seam closed. I can't for the life of me understand how this happened, since I so rarely open that window.

Anyone have luck trying to find a replacement part for their window sash lock model? There's no markings, so the best I can do is use calipers to take dimensions and then try to find a website that matches. Anyone been through this circus before?

I could buy a generic big box store model and punch more holes, but I'd prefer not to do that if I can avoid it.

Sure. I took some measurements with the calipers.

The keeper is 2.55" long, 0.3" wide, and 0.3" high at the tallest point.
The sash lock is 2.9" long, 1.25" wide.

The sash lock appears to be very similar to a 9706 model, and the sash lock keeper a 9313 model, but when I compare dimensions, it doesn't seem to add up.

I did finally discover visionhardware.com that could be promising to find a match. Still churning.

I did finally find a match and confirmed the dimensions. Sash lock is a 9706 and sash lock keeper is a 9319. The CAD drawings on the visionhardware.com website were super helpful to confirm what I have.

I bought a replacement sash lock at Ace Hardware, and it was pretty close to the original.

I use a mom and pop window shop thats been in business for decades. They found me parts, took 15 or 20 minutes in the back of the shop and didn't even charge me.
Because of that initial interaction I've given them all my business and reccomend them to customers. At the time I was doing window capping as a business.

Well, knowing is half the battle. The second half is actually trying to buy the part, and they are not on amazon. Put out a few feelers to online window hardware stores and see if I get lucky. Might try someone local here depending on how this next week goes.

The contractor who did our development used lots of the same hardware between houses so hopefully someone knows how to order them.

I just ordered a new lock for one of the windows in my garage. Cheap builder grade windows with all plastic latches that were getting brittle and not a single manufacturer mark on the latches or the windows. I removed one - made some careful measurements and ordered the closest thing I could find from Amazon after searching the web. The fixed part was my biggest problem - I could look up the same part number on different web sites and I would get different dimensions. I picked the closest thing I could find and put it on this week. As I suspected - it is about 1/16 too thick. I can open the window if I don't put any inward pressure on the top and that's easily done but it's obviously not a perfect replacement. I'm still not sure if I should say close enough and order more to finish the job or try another one. All the screw holes lined up - it's just a fraction of an inch too thick.
So - good luck. BTDT and it's harder than it should be.

Here's an update. I worked with someone from VisionHardware, and it took a few days but they were able to post the sash lock and keeper to the shopyst website for purchase. Hopefully in a few more days I'll have my window snugged down. I tried the other recommended vendors and they didn't have an exact fit.

I noticed that on the window that I discovered missing the sash lock keepers, the window with the sash lock doesn't quite fit into the keeper smoothly because when the window is all the way down, there is a little vertical offset from the keeper. It still "works" but you have to jam it in, which makes it more difficult to unlock. I think I can take some aluminum and create a thin spacer to bump up the keeper height a little more.

White screws. I've run short a few times and poked some in some cardboard and rattle canned them. You usually run them in once so they look fine. Clean them well first.

Try some non-box store lumber yards. Locally, everything from panneling nails to screws you can find in various shades of brown/tan to white.

Flat heads in colour are rare, however at one point in time HD carried "oval head" screws in colours, I haven't noticed them in awhile as they have "relined" the store and I can't understand there reasoning, it now takes me forever to find what I'm looking for. Harry
