“Four Score and 7 years ago, (actually 11 years ago), Our Founding Father, Jeffmoss26 brought forth on this forum, a new thread, conceived in the joy of garage sale finds and other classified purchases. It is dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal and that the Average Joe can go forth and purchase used tools, shop equipment, for their joy and the “thrill of the hunt” and hopefully along the way find some “u **** deals”. “Now we are engaged in a friendly picking war, testing whether our forum, or any forum so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure the endless piles of baby clothes and vhs tapes to find those piles of rusty gold we long for. We are met on a great battlefield of 2023, waiting expectantly each week to see what the other guy/gal finds. We have come to dedicate this thread to document our finds for 2023 (all the meanwhile hoping our spouses don’t find this thread and see our purchases 😊). It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this, both for our own enjoyment as well as others. “But in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow the General Tools Discussion without every one’s participation. The brave men and women, who struggled through Estate Sale wait lists and rude fellow patrons, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to document our finds with photos and words. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what might be found in this coming year. It is up to us, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work for which they who got up at the crack of dawn to be the first in line at the swap meet strive for. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored finds we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these picks shall not have been sought out in vain, that this group of deal seekers, under the Prior Host- Old Radar, shall have a new treasure trove of finds, and that thread of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish for lack of participation”

Welcome to the 2023 Garage Sale Thread!

Rules of the thread

Only post used tools you have found from the usual classified locations- Estate sales, Garage sales, Facebook Marketplace, Kiji, newspaper classifies, TOO’s, etc. If you purchased it brand new from a store, we don’t want to see it. That’s what the New Tools Thread is for…you can post anything that would normally be found in a garage or thrift store so long as it’s used. In past years we have had antiques, furniture, occasional toy, etc. I know one year we had a piece of a building that went through the A bomb. Heck, even road side/free finds/used gifts are ok. You don’t have to pay for something in order to post it on here. Ebay purchases get the green light as well as long as they are used.

  • Please make sure your posts include pictures. Some include multiple items, some include and overall shot…whatever your photography style is , post pictures. **but for heaven’s sake, please don’t lay your newest find down on your lap and take a photo. There are much better places to document your find that across your crotch** In other words, don’t be a tool when posting your new found tools. Take the extra 2 seconds to lay them on a flat surface that will result in a better photograph. Better photos also mean better opportunities for suckage comments and ultimately Awards at the end of the year 😊

  • Context is everything- feel free to share some back ground on the items or characters you encounter along the way !

  • Suckage- no self solicitation allowed. You can post and then let others decide if you have earned a “U ****” deal. One persons suckage is could be another’s trash so be respectful. Yes there is a suckage award for the most earned by a single member of this thread for 2023.

  • Prices paid- Some folks like to post what they paid and some don’t. Neither is required but I know that for myself personally , price helps to both gauge suckage and also helps to act as a market guide for what others are paying for similar items. (Example-If I see that Lugz paid $40 for a USMC(not that USMC) marked wartime Jerry Can, then if I see one for $20, I know I better hop on it quickly and ascertain the exact gauge of thickness at a later date). So It goes without saying, you will be more likely to acquire suckage if you help others out with the details.

  • POTY- Picker of the year will be determined at the end of the year via a poll here on the forum 😊. No ballot recounts or dimpled chads or any of that shenanigans.
Happy new picking year everyone!

Guess you're both right. Figured it'd fit here because of it going past midnight before I knew what half the stuff I bought was. I'll see about moving it over when I get a chance.

Well, I guess my First Haul of the Year streak is going to end at three in a row! I wasn't skunked. It was worse than that. I was SHUT OUT. Literally. Physically. I guess I should've remembered last year. They had a cable strung across the entrance, but everyone just went in through the exit instead. This year they blocked the entrance and the exit with cars! Let me tell you, there were some pissed off vendors and buyers along the side of the road bitching and moaning with each other. Not a good way to start my year!

I guess I really should've gone to Gettysburg.

My money is now on 3bay.

Best I can do (since our floor is still being repaired today and I can’t go to the flea), is give you my last haul of the old year, from a pawn shop I never set foot in before.

As I posted way back in ‘22 , the pawn shop lady dropped my Craftsman C-series 9/32 drive socket in the abyss behind the counter.

She did me kindly on my purchase though. The Mac 12” extension was marked $10, and half the tools were priced, so should have been $30 or more.

She sent me on my way for $20 no haggle involved. I was happy.

Utica pliers
Blackhawk snap ring pliers
Wright early 1/2 x 7/16 wrench
Proto 6” Clik-Stop
Craftsman 1/4 spinner
Snap On: Torx socket, 1/4 extension, roughed up 1/8 screwdriver
Blue-Point convertible tip pliers
Mac 15mm socket, 12” extension
Matco damaged pick and screw starter

The surprise today that followed is picture #4, after I wiped off the price written in marker.

HAHA! I know who you mean! The jeans guy! I like the authoritativeness of your early executive orders.
(Example-If I see that Lugz paid $40 for a USMC(not that USMC) marked wartime Jerry Can, then if I see one for $20, I know I better hop on it quickly and ascertain the exact gauge of thickness at a later date).
Snerk. Funny, thread-historical, AND knowingly clever!

For the newcomers, though, you won't often see Lugz say what he paid, because Lugz thinks that practice tends to lead to this thread placing too much value on the size of the bargain and not enough on the quality of the haul regardless of the price. He likes $1 tables as much as the next guy, but sometimes a find is so good or rare the price is irrelevant.

What, no one was selling out of their trunk?
HAHA. I left before it got past the collective bitching and moaning stage. We have company and the vendors were not tool guys.

A former host posting in the wrong thread? Tsk tsk. Where is the master-at-arms? (That's you @Outlawmws.)

^ THIS is why I like the GS thread other than all the good stuff to look at. It's a clever bunch!

I wonder if the Civil War era themed launch will lead to 19th century antiques being held in higher regard this year! One can only hope.
Nope… mid century modern… again.

Gifted to me from my son at breakfast this AM.
That counts! First haul of 2023 honors to @wrenchguy! And I will also heap an enormous amount of admirable praise equivalent to the common popular 4-letter word that starts with S and ends in K on that fine and uncommon ca. 1920's era 1-inch hex drive detachable socket set score.
I'll research and try to find all the sockets.
They were made of malleable iron, the 5/8-inch square drive versions use an ingenious spring steel leaf pinned inside the female openings as a frictional connecting device, and their main customers were railroads. I have a few sets and may have some extra sockets. Check out a thread dedicated to CM&D down on the VB here for more.

Yep! A Lincoln, founder of Lincoln Electric!
I resemble that remark. For those that don't know (Andy LINColn 100 )

Nice welcome speech. I look forward to a year's worth of treasures, including hunting, picking ,buying, selling and reading/viewing others picks.

Gifted to me from my son at breakfast this AM. My 5 year old grandson was most interested in how it worked. A young mechanic in the works. I'll research and try to find all the sockets.DSC05880.JPG
Nice set and a great start to the new year!

I have been trying for a week or so to make a pickup happen. Here's to hoping today works out.

I feel your pain! For the second year running I got a wild hair to motor over to Bussey's Flea at the beginning of the year--strictly due to the durth of estate sales this week in S.A. Last year it was ice cold--25kt wind and a 19 degree wind chill--this year it was milder but with a pea soup fog. Compounding the fog was my brain fog in trying to recall how far down the highway Bussey's was--I hadn't been out that way since this time last year. Mrs. Radar was no help--she thinks I drive too fast and had her eyes closed... When I finally recognized where we were we had overshot by 24 miles! Maybe I do drive too fast. Grrrrr.
Anyway, as we pulled up, the place looked pretty empty (again...)--but the parking booth was manned this year and the guy was happy to take $2 for my pick of their parking spots. A short walk in the fog revealed only a single vendor with any tools at all. The only thing interesting was a 1/2" Indestro Select 6470 open gear ratchet and a possible wartime Snap-on Ferret ratchet. A casual inquiry revealed the vendor needed $10 and $20 respectively. I smiled and returned his valuable tools to the table and departed for home and a hearty breakfast.

Last year, errrrr yesterday, there was some question whether the flea would be open today. Didn’t even have to turn in the parking lot (so no picture). Closed up tight as a drum. Just imagine my pic from yesterday with clear blue beautiful skies, in lieu of the fog.

Smoke, I appreciate the inventiveness in the way you opened the thread & laid down the law for this year. I’d be happy to upvote some 19th Cent. items.

Here here, I definitely understand the side of not posting what you paid. It can overshadow the findings and may sway opinion one way or another. I am pretty cheap/frugal for the most part and like to hit the dollar tables with zest so I understand your perspective on that as well! You are right in saying that some finds are so rare that price is irrelevant. And I think that’s where it can go either way. I might find a ridiculously rare plomb item and may be over the moon while no a lot of other collectors wouldn’t care less and vise versa. That’s why I like to do alot of trading with fellow collectors so that the street value isn’t the only thing determining value for our acquisitions
