Hello from middle of nowhere Alaska

Greetings all, I have been a member & lurking since 2015, so I figured what time better than now to intruduce myself. Better late than never I guess.

I live/work on Afognak Island in Alaska, managing a small forestry camp for the landowner. We are 100% off-grid. I maintain/repair everything, diesel generators, water system, sewer system, sat phone/internet system, pickup trucks, dump trucks, tractors, excavators, housing units, etc. Pretty much every single thing that could need repair/maintenance, along with all of the logistics involved with being on a remote island in the Gulf of Alaska.

I own a place on the Kenai Peninsula but don't get much time off the island for the past 7 or 8 years.

I moved to AK from OH 20 years ago & have been at this gig for eleven years.

I have been an auto tech/diesel tech my entire life & that is the only way I have earned a living since I was 16.

I look forward to continuing my learning here since my joining in 2015 & contributing when I can.

My wife is from False Pass, not Kodiak but almost the same region. She is Aleut but many of her cousins are members of the same region Afognak falls into, I can't remember the names. Cook Inlet Tribal?

Where is your place on the Kenai? I grew up in Cooper Landing, attended Soldotna High School (graduated 1990). My family had an air service there (Cooper Landing) from 1966 until about 2002.

I lived in Anchorage 1990-2012, raised our kids there and then couldn't stand the BS anymore and had to leave. Hopefully the peninsula is still what I remember.

The job on Afognak is year-round, although it gets pretty slow in the winter. My place on the peninsula is in Homer.

welcome to the Forum from Southwestern California.
My family moved to Anchorage when I was 12, Anchorage was my home until I joined the Navy a month before my 22nd birthday. I graduated from Anchorage High School in 1958.
I have found memories of living in Alaska, including the summer that I worked on a tugboat out of Seward. Never got to Afognak, but towed logs from Montague Island to Seward and Whittier.

Since my earlier post (from 2023) I've been back to AK seasonally 2 years in Delta Junction.
Contract is almost done, I'll be driving out of state in a couple weeks.

Quite a few years ago, I flew a couple of farmers up to Delta junction, they were looking to but some farmland there. I couldn't believe the thousands of acres of farmland there! As far as you could see........
