Tapered Point Self Drilling Extended Capacity Bolts Needed

Hello Everyone,

I'm in need of a somewhat (seemingly) difficult to find speciality faster we need thousands of. I'm looking for tapered self drilling extended tip bolts that a nut can be threaded upon. I've checked with McMaster Carr, Grainer, Bolt Depot and done some poking around on line but have come up empty.

All of the spade drill tips I've received samples of are too wide for a nut to thread on/over.

1/4 - 20, 5/16 - 18, 3/8 - 16. FIA requires 3/8 but we are not bound to FIA standards.

These are for a somewhat unique application - tire walls - at a race track. We need to bolt tires together both through the sidewall and tread which are then used as safety devices in the event of an off track shunt. Pre-drilling and then fitting bolts will not work well for our application.

I'm hoping the photos load of what we are after.

Thank you for any pointers on where to look and Happy New Year!!!

Best regards,

Al

Never heard of such a thing? Seen self drilling and tapping, used in aluminum frames. Check C R Lowarance.

Yup I can't find anything either... have you tried a nut on one of the sample screws anyway? Maybe it leaves enough thread depth for the application? It's good enough to make threads after drilling through sheetmetal, right.

Take an old screw driver, tip ground to a point
+ Propane torch
+ Thread-cutting hex flange bolts
+ Cordless impact driver
= Success? Hot poker pilot hole thru 2 tires?

Not sure how much holding force you need? Maybe one of those spring clips found on automobile trim instead of a real nut?

Thanks guys. Yes, they are kind of unique for sure and I'm running into walls with the request. (There is a pun there).

no704 - Spring clips won't hold a bundle together after an impact. We have been using steel bands and clips like a pallet binder, but they compress and release.

vr61x - Getting through the steel cords on the tread is tough and we are hoping to elimate the extra step in pre-drilling as in the photos attached our competitor has done. We have semi-trailers full of tires to do!

Maybe these guys....

3" Long, 3/8-12 threaded. Use an impact and run them through?
Problem is he wants something that will accept a nut and these aren't a machine screw thread. About the biggest I could find were for a #12 that works with 12/24 machine screw nut.

But with the fact the type he wants don't look to be attainable, what about a 5/16" self driller with a fender washer on the head side and then use a 1/4" hole diameter square washer on the other. That way the pilot hole is basically already drilled?. My other suggestion would be to cut up a bunch of 1/4" thick bar stock, drill pilot holes and use that for a backer if the factory stuff has too large a hole.

You're right, the only ones I can find with machine threads are 1/4".

Not sure I'd want to hit a wall assembled with pointy self drilling bolts...
No one wants to hit walls. Lookingat the photos in the first post, you can see how deep into the group the bolts are. There really is no perfect workable solution to wall construction, every incident is generally just a slight bit different.

Not sure of the relationship with your competitor, but would it be out of the question to reach out and ask them what they currently use? Over the last 27 years as a General Contractor, I learned some of my competitors can also be my biggest allies. Just a thought.

First hit.

How many do you need? I have vendors that can literally get almost anything made, but there are minimum order sizes.

Edit:

Looks like a lot of size options here

Yes, unfortunately they are direct competitors and will not

Edit 2:

I checked with The Nutty yesterday as that was the closest I've found too but ran into typical "They don't make them". She got quiet when I asked her to stay on the line while I emailed her a photo. We do need 5" . I'll need to call you back . . . .

What specific size (dia and length) do you need?

Qty?

Try experimenting cross-threading on purpose

If these dont need to be unassembled who cares if you cross thread a 1/4-28 onto a sheet metal self-tapper thread?

Or to that point, can't you just get a bunch of sheet steel rectangles to use as the washer/bolt?

This look right?

Looks like they have them from inch and a half, up to 8 inches.
That looks like a nut with preformed threads would not pass the cutting bit. Looks like the cutting part makes a slightly oversized hole, then the threaded part deforms the metal into filling in the minor diameter. I'd bet it be difficult to get a nut onto it.
