Chrome peeling on snap-on screwdrivers. Anyone else seen this??

Today i got my new set of instinct soft handle Snap-on screwdrivers. The very first screw i tightened with the 0.035" flat head driver pealed a piece of the chrome off the tip. Same thing happened with the #2 Philips within the first few screws.
I asked my dad who is a retired metallurgical engineer and he said they probably weren't cleaned properly before the plating process.
Of course Snap-on is sending a new set already, there customer service is always amazing so I'm not upset; i am however curious, has anyone else had this issue with Snap-on screwdrivers?
How about other new Snap-on products?

Cheers

Yes, I had a flat tip that the chrome came off of. It was that way when I bought it off the truck. SO replaced it no questions asked, like they always do in my experience.

Oh no!

Anyways, I'm sure that it is an isolated issue, just like several of the other complaints about the "lesser" brands recently were.

If I purchased Snap On Screwdrivers in the USA and this happened would the Snap On distributor here in the Philippines honor the warranty. Is Snap On warranty globally implemented regardless of where the product was purchased?

Thanks

No, you're incorrect. All snap-on products are **** because the chrome on two screwdrivers failed.

That has not happened to me yet. I bet it was not cleaned properly like your dad said.

All tools sold world wide will be honored globally. ........

I've never had chrome peel on any of my Snap-on screwdrivers. I do have chrome peel on the tip of a 11/16 combination wrench, but it's a vintage wrench and cannot be replaced, so I'm keeping it.

Chrome peel has never been much of an issue with me. Other more serious defects like the box end of combination wrenches being broached off center - or wrench beams that are not rounded bug the hell out of me.

So are they warranted globally then? Hate when that happens.

Why the crickets? If this were a Craftsman thread there would be a witch hunt right now. :lol_hitti

Snap-on chrome peeling isn't a defect, it's a feature. Much like the iPhone 4 antenna.

I have been seeing more and more USA tools that have pre-plating cleaning issues, I'm guessing they all are trying to cut costs by reducing process time, and not changing the cleaning solutions as often.

Not only do they put less time into cleaning the tanks, and less money into purchasing more cleaning solutions, they also put less money into disposal. Cutting corners on things like that is "logical" to reduce costs I suppose.

I just want to know where Merkava is. Maybe Craftsman isn't the horrible tool he makes it out to be.

This just goes to show that even the "better" tools aren't immune to defects. The Craftsman bashing lately has been making me sick.

Well it hasn't been hf bashing I think most people realize that simply using a hf tool doesn't mean that your house is gonna blowup and satan is gonna **** you in front of your family! There is a lil more craftsman bashing than normal buti think that's just the hf hate shifting to another brand

I had a Snap on 1/4 drive spinner, and 11mm x 13mm double open end wrench that both had peeling chrome, the spinner it was falling off before i even used it. Both were replaced the next week, no big deal at all. Now if only i could do that with my SK or Proto Sockets, or more important my Matco ratchet. At least the Proto stuff is old and USED, the SK is brand new, and the Matco, i'm told is "wear"

I'm sure the companies will figure out really quickly that going cheap won't save them any money if they have to give out two of every product for the price of one.

Does the chrome go all the way to the tip on these new screwdrivers? I'm 99% sure the chrome stops about 1/4" short of the tip on all my hard handles. Same with my Mac and Facom drivers too IIRC.

I've had the chrome peel on quite a few of my Bluepoint wrenches, dealer always replaced them with no questions though.

I havent had that problem with any of my Snap-On screwdrivers but I haven't purchased any for over a year either. Even Snap-On blows it on occasion.

Happen to me a month ago. I bought a flat blade cabinet hard handle & the wide sides of the blade where it tapers had deep grain lines & one thin side of the blade had a chrome chip with the rest looking rough & ready to follow suit. Dealer replaced it with a new blade from the ceiling of his truck with no issues. The replacement is leaps & bounds better but still has dulled chrome & two small but visible streaks where polishing wasn't quite right. I like Snap On but my experience has been Hit n' Miss / Give n' Take with their recent stuff. Bittersweet :( If I want anything else I'll keep my eyes peeled for an Ebay steal otherwise I'll call up The Tool Shed and order Wright  I won't buy from the truck again.

They make it look like the chrome ends by "vapor blasting" the tips. This is to protect the chrome and grab the screw better. This video shows them making the instinct screwdriver.

They skip the chrome plating but show before and after vapor blasting.
And its just a cool video in the first place.
