Hi Everyone,

New member from Central Iowa (Marshalltown area). My wife and I live on an acreage (6 acres) about 5 miles from the nearest town (corn fields on all four sides). The acreage is a building site of a farm that was spit off from the farm ground back in the 1980's (we have owned the acreage since 1987). We have a nice 1905 farm house that we have redone, a 24x24 garage, a smaller garage, a good size corn crib, a 24x60 metal building used for storage and a 40x60 wood framed machne shed (2x6 construction, not a pole barn) that I use as my shop.

I am a car guy (Fords). I own and restore Mustangs and late model big Broncos. I also do a bit of very, very amature auto road racing (I am in the middle of 1965 Mustang track car build). I retired a few months ago after 40 plus years as a design engineer (I have a ME degree). I have been enjoyed my retirement and I have been getting in a fair amount of shop time. As a retirement gift I have been planning on doing a major shop upgrade that I will be posting about soon.

So again, hi from Iowa!

Kim Barron

Welcome to the Forum from Southwestern California, My shop fills a need for a place to hammer and bang and keep a sometimes feeling of accomplishment in my retirement.

Hello and welcome! Good luck on the shop upgrade and retirement. I used to work in Marshalltown about 12-13 years ago.

Hey from Benton County. I get to the races in Marshalltown once in a great while.
I have been thru Vinton a few times. They do put on a pretty good show at the fairgrounds here.
You may enjoy that the car in my avatar is my 65 Mustang at an autocross thru the streets of downtown Nevada back in the 80's, which was crazy fun. I am guessing that it could not be done today.

My nephew bought an old Formula SAE car that he intends to autocross. I may go with him some this summer.

Where did you work in Marshalltown. I was at Fisher(Emerson).
I was with the high voltage contractor L.E. Myers.
I went to school with "Big Dave" Riley(sp?) and last I heard he was in IT at Fisher. He is a gearhead too, but focused more on mud/rock crawling.

Glad to see another Iowan on the board! Welcome from Des Moines!

A couple of my good friends from college work at Fisher on the engineering side of things.

He will have a blast with it. The Formula SAE cars are a lot of fun on an autocross course. Did he get an old Iowa State car or one from somewhere else? Is he going to run with SCCA (Iowa Region I would guess)? If I get my new 65 Mustang done for the up coming summer, I may do a few SCCA autocrosses. The car is built to be a long course car but I may run a few autcrosses as time allows. Look for a very low 65 Mustang with big fender flares and really wide tires.

Sorry, but I do not know a "Big Dave". I was in the valve engineering area.

It is possible that I may know them. I was in the valve engineering area for over 40 years. I was a design engineer in the Special Product Group.

My nephew got his ME degree from Iowa State but the car was built by one of the Missouri schools. He found it on FB Marketplace. I don't remember the exact story.

He plans to run Iowa Region SCCA but has also mentioned both the Des Moines and the Quad Cities area groups.

I've offered him the use of my truck and trailer but he's the kind of kid who's not comfortable just taking them. I'll probably end up going with him at least some of the time.

We'll keep an eye out for you and your Mustang.

He should have a good time with it. I got my ME degree from Iowa State also. It served me well for many years.
