Estwing, are they moving production?

I checked out a Michigan HD close by and saw the same as some others reported - the Estwing framing and claw hammers were marked down by a few dollars with yellow tags. The fiberglass handled sledges and "engineering" style hammers were still full price, as were any of the pry bars or nail pullers.

The clearance prices weren't anything special. I can get the standard claw ones on Amazon cheaper than HD's "discounted" price. I was hoping to find a good deal on something with a leather handle, but nothing like that was left.

I was back in the same HD today, and all of the Estwing claw hammers that were originally on "clearance" pricing (only about $3-$4 off) are sold out. BUT, now they've put the rest of the Estwing products on clearance, and for quite low prices.

I picked up a 2 lb mini sledge, 4 lb "blacksmith" hammer (flat sledge on one end and point on the other), and a nice nail puller, which were all about 50% off. I think each one was only around $12. The fiberglass handled hammers were all made in Taiwan, and the nail puller was US made. I have the 3 lb mini sledge and use it all the time, so at these prices I couldn't pass up the other sizes.

Those mini sledges were long gone around me even before this round of price reduction. So no luck there. I did find a couple big construction pry bars made in usa, but I am very reluctant to use up more of my garage space. So I only picked up this little nail puller. Made in Taiwan, but seems very well made and kinda cute. $16 -> $8. Nice souvenir. Losing a big distribution channel like HD is a survival level disaster on tool makers. Not sure how Estwing can handle this.

I'm not worried about Estwing. But reduced availability is a bit annoying. I prefer to shop @ a real lumberyard.

Given so much interest in this thread. I went to HD today to play with the hammers. For the 22oz hammers there are estwing 35 marked down to 27, dewalt 33, crescent 27, husky 25. I swing them for a while, the dewalt one actually feels the most confident. Mostly due to handle. It’s also the most pleasant to my eyes in appearance. So unless someone is determined to buy USA made tools, estwing is going to be a hard sell, especially at the normal price. Nobody uninformed knows about durability, right? And seems the dewalt can last a while itself

Decided to take a tour at the local HD to see if I can score a good deal. All the tools are gone from their usual places. Looking at the price, you can see near the end, some items are marked 75% off. Good for whoever got them. So I just looked around for other stuff, like tool boxes. But then I noticed that there’s a 28oz roofing hatchet. I did a price check and it’s only $8! Well, the rest is history now. Good luck treasure hunting.
