One of my neighbors was closing down his design office and was giving away old drafting tables. I picked one up thinking I could use it for a desk, but after getting it I noticed it has a solid wood top and very rigid legs...My new work bench with a 3x7 top!

I've seen these on CL every once in a while usually cheaper than homemade workbenches.

That looks like a Hamilton; I had a drafting table like that I used as a chart table long ago. They are very sturdy bases but the top is not meant for heavy work.

I have the same Mayline "Ranger" drafting table. They're about $1,000 new.

Be aware that the top is not solid, but a core sandwiched around two layers of 3/16" plywood. It is best used for drafting, the top would be quickly damaged if used as a workbench.

If you want to use it as a workbench, lay on an oversize piece of 3/4" plywood, secured from the bottom with clamps.

I'm an architect and I bought one of these new in 1985 and paid $550.00. We are buying a couple new ones for our new office, believe it or not folks still do some hand sketching and drafting. The new tables are well over $1,000 bucks. Enjoy it nice snag...

What makes it so expensive? It looks nothing more than a wood surface with metal legs, maybe $200 worth of materials.

I used a cousin to that board for 30 years. Identical except it was all wood, frame/legs and small drawer, didn't have a long drawer. I had a fiber cover not the soft green one that one has. The green ones tended to wrinkle with humidity and temp changes.
