Good Weekend for me ! Flywheelers with my brother yesterday nd some nice scores today out with my wife for some garage sales.

Fairly complete tap and die set with wood case from Handy (Hansen). A pretty cool Yankee screwdriver tool set box with some nice bits. The bit holder is spring loaded, when you push down the bits raise up to be grabbed. Never seen one of these before. Then I found a Eifel Geared Plierench with the pouch and instructions! Next is a partial Snap On Midget set (No. 55 9/32-Drive Socket Set) and a nice USA 1/2 x 9/16 (I collect them). Also found a BILLINGS & SPENCER 7" adjustable and a small Made in Germany adjustable. A set of letter and number steel stamps and a stensil set. 2 good size compasses, Starrett scribes, USA plumb bob, bronze golf club head (didnt know that when I bought it!)
And... 2 sets of Stanley trammel points!!

The seller with the tap and die set was pretty reasonable on prices and he talked me into buying this Heavy Duty tool box. Handmade with a cart to pull around to the job site.
You could set a engine on the box or the tray and they wouldnt move. My wife had made a food run as she could see I was going to be at this sale for a while. As I rolled the box down the driveway to the road for her to pick me up, I told the seller I would want a refund if my wife saw the tool box and kept going.... LOL

Fun couple of days !!

Seems like the Bay Area is picking up some since the rain stopped for a while. We missed the pre sale but went to the estate sale in San Leandro today. There was a ton of rusty treasures and we brought plenty home.

Today's work was a little more dicey, first sale turned out to be someone we knew through dogs, but nothing really of interest except a small winch I was too late on, and a bunch of dog stuff, which I did not need. En route to another scheduled stop, we saw a regular vendor on the main road was having another sale, so we went past and pulled over, and walked back. Found a Contico box with some goodies, started pawing through, pulled out a few nice US made vintage files from good names, and a Shark-O-Lite Swedish made chisel, a Berg with a plastic handle. I was trying to decide how much more to dig when the seller announced 50¢ per tool or $10 for the box. Looking at how little I'd dug, and found about 10 things, I punted and grabbed the box. Also grabbed a Dietz 100 lantern marked for PG&E with a red globe, and an Intermatic surge strip with a long cord. That and some CDs and we were on our way. Carrying the stupid box by the bottom as both latches were broken. Third stop was a bust.

Here is a quick view of the complete haul from this vendor, and a few goodies pulled out that convinced me to buy the box.
PXL_20230121_192045322-2128x1008.jpg

And here is the guts of the box spread out, with the trash already in the bin, and the nearly trash already in the garage sale box. Right to left, mostly: Rapace pin wrench, 2 wide Swedish berg and 1 narrow Stiletto chisels (another local distributor brand), W German adjustable, Crestoloy needle nose and Klein cutter, Thorsen socket on an unknown extension, bunch of hole saws, SK 3/8" ratchet, 3x snap ring pliers, impact driver, Solsons POP spanner, patent pending, RA drill adapter with a Jacobs chuck, bunch of files and other goodies.

On confusing branding from the Greek…
Atlas was is an immortal Titan (the strongest among them), not a hero, brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus. After he backed Cronos’ losing team against the Olympians, Zeus condemned him to press and hold Ouranos (Sky) and Gaea (Earth) apart in perpetuity, so no new Titans could be conceived. Later, the hero Herakles shouldered the load temporarily.
There were two Aiantes: Greater Ajax and Lesser Ajax, which designation may have indicated both their differing physical stature and differing temperments. Both were heroes who fought with the Argives against the Trojans.
Greater Ajax was considered second in battle only to Achilles among the Argives, and exceeded him in raw strength. After a bout of infuriated rage, during which he slaughtered penned cattle, he regarded his honor as irrecoverable and fell on his own sword.
Lesser Ajax was known for his quickness, but also rash acts. After ****** the Trojan seer (and consecrated virgin) Cassandra in the temple of Athena (also a virgin) he incurred the wrath of the gods and met his end in shipwreck.
It seems to me the use of “Ajax” among products connotes both the strength of the Greater and the speed of the Lesser. The use of “Atlas” connotes an untiring fortitude on an elemental scale.

Our second estate sale was in Oakland and was being put on by a reliable company. We found a little Thorsen combo, a Powr-Kraft screwdriver and combo wrench, a Stanley Yankee push drill, a rawhide mallet and a Craftsman =vv= combo. In keeping with the Bay Area Stiletto theme, one of the auger bits was Stiletto brand.

RTM: Nice pile of woodworking tools...the corner brace and mortise lock chisel are cool looking. Makes one appreciate the skill and time it took to use those types of tools.

Not me LS, I don't even drink alcohol!

I looked up the Blue Line wrench adn It also turns out I have a 3/4" as well, so I'm two into a "Set" :headshake

Made by HP tools and likely 60's decent quality. (which is why I bought it)

As opening time approached, the estate agent announced that those who wanted to enter the garage first could line up there. I moved over with alacrity only to see a familiar face stand up from where he had been sitting, hidden by a bush and position himself in the number one spot for the garage, relegating me to number two. He is a reseller and we are on talking terms despite his uncanny and annoying habit of always being in front of me in line. I knew exactly what he was going for and he failed to fall for my opening-time warning that his shoe was untied...

I like to always talk to the Estate sale guys when they show up and ask where the tools are, are they going to open the garage first and where the line up will be.

RTM- can you show us some more of the Rapace wrench? That looks interesting.

Don- some nice Blackhawk and Plomb finds in there.

RedVise- that looks like a great Flywheelers haul. Will the tool wagon make a future appearance there? Looks perfect for it.

Old Radar- that *****. A miss like that can be a real gut punch. I have a bunch of misses (and blunders due to hesitation) that I can’t forget many years later.

Hidden by a bush...

I read it as OR couldn't see him because of where the bush was, relative to where the guy was. Not that the guy was hiding.

Best/worst part about Estate Sales is that the early bird gets the good stuff, regardless of what someone else wants to pay. I have shown up to sales 2hrs before they open, just to ensure I can grab the thing I have my eye on (latest was a J-Line Shaper, for $250). Generally, it is between 20-60min, depending on how bad I want first dibs at some stuff.
I read it this way as well… the other buyer was first in line but he was obscured by a bush. That’s really irritating but I am sure we all have stories like that. I have missed out on some good buys just by being courteous and not running over people but it’s just part of the game. ***** he missed on the reed vise though

Not much to report but I did go to one sale yesterday. My son had the best finds of the day

- bag of old cowboys and Indians figures with the fences, horses and saddles( has a Star Wars Princess Leia figure in it.
-old comic from 1977

I scored this engraver in a bag and my wife got this bird hanger for her plant shrine

All told it was $13. Not a you **** but we all got out of the house!

Hopefully leia wasn't scalped and that's why we're not seeing that iconic hair.
Nope, hair is all there. I need to research this to see if it’s worth anything? It says Hong Kong 1977 on her leg on the back

I'm no expert but I did have that a child. That looks like the Empire Strikes Back outfit without the plastic cape. Which would be about ten years later than 77. I couldn't make out the mark on the leg, I think they were still being made by Kenner.

Estate sale on Friday morning pics showed a double stack Cman tool box, Cman work bench with drawers and a HF press. I thought this had all the markings af a decent score. First one on the list I headed straight for the garage where I was greeted by a huge tarp sectioning off half the garage. Guess which half the tools were on... hint; it wasn't the side I was on that had stuff for sale. They sectioned off half the garage and the tools were in the not for sale section. I expressed my displeasure at their bait and switch tactics and left. Tempted to back over their sinage but the lawn was wet and didn't want to chance getting stuck in the mud.

Definitely Kenner. My older cousins had that classic figure, plus the Endor forest gear Leia and Boush Leia. Both figures had the cool helmets!

RTM- can you show us some more of the Rapace wrench? That looks interesting.
Gladly, that's an easy one, it was near the top of the pile.

Quickly searching, I found this Flickr page (for some reason GJ is breaking the link, remove the " dot ", replace with "."
https://www.flickr dot com/photos/82132184@N05/12499816073

The text there translates to:
A Ladreyt N° 1 Raptor key. (Rapace is Raptor, Cie is wrench)
This is a very effective tool for sobering up track hub lock nuts.
It says "NICRO" on the bird's beak, indicating that the tool is made of an alloy of nickel and chromium.

PXL_20230122_214344579-X2.jpg

Where theirs say Nicro, mine says BVI 499 Notas gross at the pic makes it look)

PXL_20230122_214403466-X2.jpg

The back is unmarked and boring
PXL_20230122_214421954-X2.jpg

A quick google search isn't turning up much, apparently there was a motocross guy named Ladreyt, which may lend clues based on the comment on track in the shared link. Need to work on my French googling.

Man, it really cheeses my lumpia when that happens--especially if was a drive to get there or you prioritized that sale over another you could have gone to first. Probably a good decision not to back over their sign if getting stuck was a possibility!

So the first item in the ads that caught my eye was a Stanley #46 plane with 12 blades.

In the pic, left to right, front to back:
a Millers Falls corner brace with well worn wood, and the Stanley #46 and the box of blades.

PXL_20230121_201255548-X3.jpg
Great find on the 46 with blades. I've never found one locally that was good enough to consider buying, and they go for too much for my budget when I find them at the tool meetings. I think that the corner brace is probably a Stanley or Fray as the chuck and jaws don't look like what MF used on corner braces.

Thanks, Yup, me too. I often see them with one blade, or no blades, for $50, but a repro set of blades is $175. I will be buying a 3/4" blade from St James Bay for ~$20 next time they are in stock.

good eye sir. I had looked it up later that evening, and realized it was a John S Fray #80, but hadn't gone back to edit it. Fixed.
