Proper reveal on window

I installed brand new aluminum windows. I'm going to build the window returns with 1x pine boards (3/4") after the framing, drywall, and painting is complete. The framing will determine how much of the window stiles and rails are left exposed. My plan was to setup a laser on the perimeter of the window and then pull the 2x4 framing up to the laser line.

Is that the right way to do it?

You're windows are installed, so your going to measure off of them so not to have varying reveals. This way you'll be able to "manufacture" the jambs in quantity, much easier than every window being different.
Just leave room for some insulation.

I find your question odd in that the 2x4 framing is usually of the rough opening and is what the window is attached to. and then the returns / jambs are fastened to that framing as well and overlap the interior body of the window frame. And then the casing or trim is mounted to your finished wall surface and 'reveal' is usually describing how much of the return / jamb edge is showing, inboard of the casing / trim.

So I really can't tell what you are talking about in bringing the 2x4 framing up to a laser line. Isn't the framing already in place?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. I've done many window replacements, modified a bunch of walls and worked with a lot of 'reveals' including building up tiled shower walls with windows in them.

If you are asking how far inboard on the interior face of the window framing your return / jamb boards should be, the answer is 'wherever looks good' and is usually happenstance based on how oversized the rough opening was for the window unit.

eta - never seen someone try to make them all exactly the same, unless they have some sort of disorder.
