The 2 car garage shuffle.

I have been functioning better with a bigger workbench than I had, and a small overhead cabinet.. I've overgrown for my 2 car attached garage I think.. With a plasma cutter/welder cart, 2 roller boxes, storage shelves, spare sheet steel and tubing, mini fridge and a horizontal compressor, and then add in the washer and dryer and water heater, I'm busting at the seams. I can somewhat function but working on anything normally gets stuff in a mess quick. As the pic shows... It picks up quick but still... I have to move my small roller box to get to my storage rack behind it filled with tubs of stuff..

So I don't want to remodel the entire house to put washer and dryer inside, cause I don't like this house that much. But thinking of pulling them off their pedestals and putting a bench across the top of them. Getting rid of one roller box. And finding area or selling off my extra inventory of steel etc. Possibly build a covered steel rack outside or make one in my small storage shed...

I have to fit these two in there... They work pretty good with the 31 tudor on the side of the workbench, and the 56 dodge on the other side... but still its a pain. Throw in the 2 separate garage doors and have fun trying to work...

If I had room to bump out I would But I'm 8' from property line so a 2' bump would almost be not worth putting holes through my bricks...

So pick your minds for a second. Should I open up the sides of the garage more by using small cabinets that are not that deep to slide stuff in etc, maybe get one full workbench and set my big roller box bottom on the ground, separate the top from it, and do the same with the small roller box and put a workbench on top of them for my vice etc? Then where to house my compressor is the next issue? Its 110v electric 20 gallon. Ill get you some pics of the other side of the garage... I know I can do better with this and will probably require a lot of built in stuff now.. Other issue being in Houston trying to find this affordable stuff you guys find is getting harder these days. Cabinets and drawers are either priced like gold plated stuff or already sold.

So I already have decent lighting by a few 8' strips and 1 4' and floor is decent but needs some touch up from welding and fab work again. So what to throw money at first... Cabinets and storage, converting to single door, or just function and build my next house in a few years with a timeless setup? :dunno:

Thanks for hearing me out and give me your opinions and input on how to cram a size 20 in size 10 jeans.

Hope everyone is doing well these days. Thanks again.

Looks like it's time for a purge and organize. The bench top over the washer/dryer is a good idea but it will be high even with the pedestals gone. If you are just going to put **** back on top then it is a wasted effort.

Helped a friend with his place and he rented one of those storage pods for a couple of weeks while he first sorted and purged going into the unit and again on the way back out. Cleaned, painted, sorted and organized and it only took twice as long as he thought it would.

i've got a small garage and am always looking for ways to gain "space"

i have my compressor in a corner sitting (approx 5' off the floor) on a platform secured to the studs made of some scrap steel and plywood.

added a couple shelves to it to hold misc stuff, room underneath for jackstands, and some room behind it, against the wall for a bike lift and manual tire changer (rarely used)

scrap lumber and garage sale shelf brackets all along the back wall lined with salvaged acro bins for misc storage.

suspended shelves up high in both back corners of the garage, large enough for at least 2 storage totes for rarely used stuff.

workbench doesnt serve much for working :dunno: vice on one end, bench grinder in the middle, other end stacked up with metal pull out drawers. 2 shelves underneath for storage..

just recently i moved my s-10 blazer trail truck outside permanently :( to make room for the drill press, disk/belt sander and shear i picked up.

sorry for the crappy pic, the empty space is where the blazer was parked
you can sorta see the compressor back in the corner

Here is what I got last night...

I think its going to be time to stack the washer and dryer or the bench..

The bench wouldn't be so bad if I had room for all this stuff...

Guess this is going to be a slow process for sure... But the final product should be worth it...

Thinking first thing to tackle is the washer and dryer ordeal... What do you guys think?

Nice washer and dryer, there's some money invested in them. That being said, I'm surprised the wife hasn't insisted that they be moved out of the garage with the type of work that you are doing.

Have you considered adding a storage shed in the backyard to free up some space ?

If you're considering build "the next house" in a few years, have you considered moving that time frame up?

There is some money in there for sure for those two... and overall I am impressed saying I went from 15 year old maytags to those... Yeah when welding and fabricating she wont come out there... She knows...

I have a storage shed, but wife and Christmas have taken half of that already... BUT have strongly considered making her......... purge some.....

Yeah I have thought about pushing it forward... and since housing market here is doing better It may be time to profit 30k on this house and get moving...

Got me thinking that maybe I do need to work on storage shed first and foremost... and get some garage organization here and there in between.

I have a suggestion I'm thinking of doing myself. Instead of a shed (where you think you may move at some point anyway) how about a nice enclosed trailer? I was thinking I could store some of the larger tools I don't use all the time and just swap them out for different projects. For example wood working tools in the shed during truck build then welder, torches, plasma, etc in the trailer when doing the kitchen over. The right trailer would also allow separate bike parking too (for me) to allow more work space when needed.

I have been searching the internet and I think I can get a used trailer for about the same as building an equivalent sized shed and it's portable with more future uses.

Move.

You don't like the house and the garage is too small.

It's easier and cheapar to move now than to delay and face the inevitable later.

If moving isn't in the cards, then maybe getting the posters, trophies and other stuff out of the garage. Cabinets or shelves to replace.
Can you go up on the garage?

We have our washer and dryer inside first floor, and it makes it very convenient for laundry. We're in NY so the water would freeze in the garage unless it gets heated and insulated ($$$$).

Do you have a basement those can go into?

I ended up building a loft. Even if you can get 3 feet between the top and the garage ceiling, that's space you can use for bins and supplies you don't need all the time. You can also increase the density a lot with bins up there, especially with short things grouped together.

You've got plenty of space.

It's all about organization.

You need to think about the tasks that are the most important and the most frequent, and focus on having those tasks closest to you. Other tasks can move further away.

All storage should go away to other locations.

If you have a basement, it is real easy to move the washer and dryer there and hook them up.

If this is a working shop, I wouldn't worry about visual clutter.

But you need to analyze your workflow and set things up for the most efficient usage.

Anything not related to the tasks at hand needs to go elsewhere.

Imagine that the space is empty. In fact, pull all the rollers and misc. out of there and then refurnish it with just the bare minimum of what you need. Put the rest in storage.

Same goes with individual rollers and boxes.

The standard isn't how much can I fit in, that I might need. It's how little can I get by with, and still have what I need.

Is that a bunch of trophies? Out!

And why so many rollers and boxes? Do you really need that many tools?

One very quick and inexpensive solution to get space would be to park one of the project vehicles in a temporary garage.

Would any of this work for you?

And yes, visual clutter, clutters up the mind. I'd strip all the stickers off everything. Put things away in cabinets. Even make a makeshift door on the front of a bench, or hang a piece of canvas in front of it to hide clutter.

Simplify. Eliminate. Move auxiliary functions elsewhere.

I'm moving all my woodworking and auto maintenance out of my garage to leave it a purely metalworking shop.

Use your entire house and yard. Use a trailer for storage.

Think about it.

People with laundry and water heater in garage will have little chance of a basement.
Not everyone is bothered by visual clutter. More by actual clutter.
There is plenty of space there. Moving stuff to non existent other space just doesn't work.
And how can anyone here ever say "You have too many tool"?

I'll say it.

I've got too many tools for efficient use of my 1 car garage. And that is without using it as storage for household, yard or parking cars etc.

Things are finite. It takes X amount of space for each machine.

And when you have so many tools, that you spend more time looking for a tool, than using it, you have a problem.

I worked in a 1 man shop where the owner had so many mills, that he could never find the one he wanted. It was unorganized, but he also had too many mills. He needed to sort them, sell some, sharpen some and organize what he kept.

Was there yesterday. It's still the same. Sometimes it takes him 30 minutes to find the right mill.

We all like to say you can't have too many tools, but of course you can.

Visual clutter DOES effect people. It reduces your ability to focus and process information:

the 1st thing i would do is an overall cleaning/purging, toss out the stuff you dont really need/want.

ie: the seat sitting in the middle of the floor

trophies are a touchy subgect with some people, i tossed out (in the trash) approx 100 of them 17 years ago when i moved, i accumulated 25-30 more over the next few years.
i decided to keep the ones that really meant something to me, (i have 4 or 5 left now). i peeled off the event plaques and have them set aside, i plan on eventually mounting them all on one wallhanger.
i did the same thing with 40 years of dash plaques from shows and events.

i found out i really didnt need a fridge in the garage....

i find if i dont really clean/toss stuff every six months or so, i've got a real mess on my hands.

I could never understand the need of the seating and lounge chairs, couches, etc. In the garage and the same with bars, refrigerators.....maybe it's just me.

Ok guys...I started with some of your advice this weekend... Decided I needed to utilize space and room.. So spent 9 hrs Friday moving stuff for a first attack at the main area of workspace the bench and area beside it. Found this cabinet for 75 bucks from a hotel liquidator guy here by my work. I was real close at buying 2 of these but space goes quick with a decent cabinet. haha.

No basement here in Texas.. I would love to have one for sure.. And I am going to be moving a lot around for sure now.. I have to stay here about another year or 2 to please the "wife" and "kids" But all in all I will make this work best for me as I can.

So many roller boxes, well I have a lot of tools, from 1/4" drive to 3/4" drive ratchets and sockets. misc body hammers, one off tools for the weird stuff Im working on. Yesterday I did body work, the day before some electrical, then carburetor's, total of 8 of them. This is all just stuff for me and my friends normally...

I think the trophies will have to go somewhere else.. I like the idea of stripping the plaque off them and discarding.. Most of these were best of show or very notable wins when I was on the show circuit... But getting older makes you realize its the friends and memories that matter... not plastic and marble.

In the shed... Was in building looking at boxes... Im going to make the wife consolidate her junk for holidays into 1 box. Or we transfer to the attic in the house. No negations. I moved some boxes to the shed and it helped out quite a bit. Thinking of the storage rack I have in the garage behind the smaller roller box and all the tubs moving it all out to the shed after Christmas junk gets figured out... My Mini loft in the shed is filled but I think I may re deck some of it to add more space...

Attic, there is a 4' tall attic above the garage with peak and valley style roof coming in part of it, The celling rafters and tie joists is like a Lincoln log puzzle in there, Stuff everywhere. So If I put a small stairway in there, I could turn at least a 6'x'6' place into decking and put bins up there also... Valid options for sure.

I like the suggestions.. And appreciate it very much.

Oh... and putting a car in temporary storage is not happening down here where I live. And all my buddies garages are full also.. an enclosed trailer I had thought about but deed restrictions and storage vs. how much things get broken into down here I'm not going to chance it.

So Let me know what you think on my first round of progress. Notice the tops of the Roller boxes actually close now.

Oh.. And the Bench seat was in there for a party. Then was meant to be cut down for use in a project truck and now works as catch all. Soon it goes somewhere else but here. The shop stools are not the best for comfort either. Going to have to find some better shop stools for a bigger **** guy.

The deed restriction covers registered trailers? We can have them as long as they are registered. My insurance won't cover the tools inside though unless I add extra tool insurance to the trailer which I may do. Security is easy. The trailer is as if not more secure than the garage if you get a good trailer and lock it up. I thought of that too. I even figured I might take a wheel off so it can't be towed away.

In my case I might be able to consolidate two sets of tools into one and use it for my business too so I could save a lot of space.

Sounds like you have some ideas to help though. I bet you get more space than you think during your consolidation.

Good luck.

Here in my neighborhood... 2 days a trailer is in your driveway of the house you own.. you start getting letters about day 4 or 5.. and continue to get them till legal action is threatened.. ask me how I know this so well. haha.

Been really thinking this morning here...

May move washer and dryer into the dining room area. Minimal plumbing and electrical to just move from one side of the wall to the other. My dining room is pretty large so I can work a nice build in for the machines I think.

Going to either buy another bottom box that has more drawers for the larger cabinet. The size is good but the drawers **** with them being deep and no dividing walls in the drawers.. Plus they are way outdated and weight is an issue with the 3/4" drive drawer for sure And going to get the small tool box and roller cart to the shed I think.. or if I can get the washer and dryer moved quick. take the small roller and use bottom for new workbench at back wall of garage.. HMMM....

went through more stuff last night... moved some things around to see what my cad drawing would work like having that box in the middle... and it *****.

The big roller against a wall is best option I believe.

I now know why you guys are utilizing every bit of wall space..

Taking suggestions I have rounded up more stuff to sell or give away...BENCH seat will be going also.

Have started going through my storage shelf that was tucked behind the small roller box. Moving 10 tubs off there to the building. Consolidating also.

Washer and dryer ordeal is another issue... cant stack them cause wife is too short. Looking at plumbing changes to move inside. and its worse than orig. thought so wall tear out of sheetrock and a lot of plumbing modifications. so a lot to consider now.

But have came up with an idea that may actually work after all. Thinking of building a sliding cabinet or door cabinet above the washer and dryer. That will gain me tons of storage, clean up the overall look of that huge open space above them...

Looks like Friday I will be buying some lumber to start building some stuff I think.

This resonated with me for years. I finally have made some major improvements.

I purged all but 4 awards. I quit counting at 50 trophies that I threw away. I got rid of the window ac in the side door of the garage, I upgraded to a mini split. The washer and dryer went to the inside of the house on the other side of the wall they were on. I donated my existing roller boxes to a buddy who had nothing, and got 1 big box for all the tools. After covid bs, I am on a work from home permanent placement so I work every day in the garage, take breaks wrenching on something for 10 min then back to work. SO all in all the garage has made a lot of upgrades. 20 inches insulation in the celling. Attic stairwell, insulated garage doors, new liftmaster openers. Got rid of the old compressor and got a stand up dewalt 30 gallon. I am far from done but its getting better every day.

To touch on the guys asking about trailers, I just don't have the room and deed restrictions restrict them anyways. 7500 sq ft lot and just not enough room.

So with that said, yes its not perfect but its alot better than where I was. 2 car fun.... So here is where the washer and dryer went to.

washer 1.jpg

Full built in cabinet system on this wall, worked out great and freed up some room, now wife cant complain...

So here is how that area turned out where the washer and dryer was. The stickers are kids having fun with all the stuff I get and wanting to "Decorate"

garage3.jpg

I moved the cabinets off the left wall of the garage and moved them up by the entry door. When doing that I was able to put my grandfathers box with the vice under one of them and add a new bench grinder etc. This has turned out to be a great work station. When I need more room for longer stuff, I get my fold up jack stands out and make a bench out of that or get the cosco folding table out and work with that.

So I have invested some money into TMR fab stuff, got to say their jack stand storage is great, their grinder storage is great... Just got the welder bottle organizer. Ill post more pics of those later if anyone wants.

So here is the right wall, this one has the mini split, charging area for my cordless tools, some storage for funnels and jack stands etc. This wall has a spare jack for right now till it goes to its next home. Also added some steel storage on the wall, simple and easy storage just to keep a little steel in stock. I purged all my old stock and donated it to other folks builds.

garage1.jpg

Here is the left side, I have 2 grease gun holders on the wall now, 1 for regular grease and 1 for synthetic grease for poly bushings. I have my grandfathers sawmill blades hanging on the wall. The engine hoist takes up some room that I would like back but at least it folds up well. My uncle gave me a drum he had laying around so I upgraded to a large trashcan. The spare motor is the orig A motor out of the car. The red chair is for sale but has worked out when buddies come over to hangout. The celing needs a good sand and re texture after getting attic access put in right, I have some decking installed up there and have moved alot of the small stuff that I dont use often up there. Some holy grail hotrod gold has been put up there for the next build also.

garage2.jpg

Long term, I have 3 more years here I think due to not wanting to move kids out of their schools and programs etc. With that said, I am probably going to get a small lean to built off the side of the house to get some more garage stuff out of there, I have my spring reverse press in here and some other things that just need to move out so I can get more room, I have gained alot and have purged a ton of stuff, but Im down to the bare bones for some things. I have the dorman boxes that hold my drill press bench, these are full of nuts and bolts that I buy by the pound at tractor supply, its a ton cheaper than always going to the hardware store for nuts and bolts.

Probably will add more shelving on the walls, I want to get my wash buckets off the floor for washing cars. Putting the stereo speakers up high freed up alot of room also. But here is where I am right now. The next will be an oversized 2 up to a 4 car garage I think, corner lot with parking for my car hauler behind the fence etc. That is the plan and I'm waiting to ride the downturn out for pricing etc.

The 2 8' LED fixtures on each bay are the godsend for lighting, I got them at the depot. Flawless and I am removing all my flourcent fixtures as we speak.

So that's the skinny from 7 years ago to now. It was a major revamp for sure, but it works, I dont trip on things, and I can do about everything I need to do without issue.

Amazing transformation. You still have some room for up high cabinets above your monitors. You can put your less used tools or supplies up there. In your original photos you had spray cans, oil bottles and so on. Shallow shelves one can or bottle deep could be added to your side wall, free up your existing cabinet space. It looks great, just going you a few ideas to continue to utilize wall space.

Yes big change after these years and thanks for providing an update. But I have to say I still see a lot of wasted wallspace just filled with decor and a pile of stuff still on the floor.
A row of high cabinets hung on french cleats would give you a lot of useful storage space for material supplies.

I've found a lot of utility in having a lot of things on wheels. Including some storage shelves and baker racks. I'm able to easily reconfigure the space for different projects. Even a mass of moving boxes in my garage has every stack on inexpensive moving dollies. I can easily more a pile to get to something.

I sorta run into that problem too! I have a bunch of motorcycle memorabilia and it is all stashed away. My wife mentioned hanging it in the garage and I told her to come out and tell me here? Most walls have cabinets or windows. My neighbor gave me **** because I have a cabinet screwed right over, covering a window! :ROFLMAO:

I know a couple guys that put a shelves all the way around the garage, about 18" from the ceiling. They have the shelves full of storage tubs of stuff they can not part with but don't need very often. Some of mama's Christmas decorations and similar stuff.

I am forunate as the guy I bought our place from just built the garage and the whole attic has a floor. It is a head banger, but we have a lot of stuff up there.

I have found that milk crates make good storage containers and can be easily stacked.
My first van, an 80 something Toyota, had an elevated floor in the cargo area that was high enough to allow the crates to be slid under it. A long hook made of Re-Bar made it easy to retrieve the milk crate i wanted. I also had dedicated tool boxes for plumbing, painting, electrical and carpentry.

I also had a shelf on the side of the box opposite the door for things like replacement light bulbs.

Thanks, Yeah I am working that out right now also. The TV will be centered on that wall and a 24" x 30" cab on each side of it will work out great. The area above the compressor will get another 24" cab setup, and then the icing on the cake is the 30"x15" cabinets at the roofline down the compressor side of the garage. This should give high storage for the things that are not frequently used but still needed. The 24s will be for more accessible items also. The side of the garage with the mini split will take on the decorative stuff, I am framing a few of the pictures I have of random cars that I built here etc.

Stay tuned folks, more revamp to come sooner than my last update timeframe.

So I had a emergency water heater repair this last weekend, the store bought pipe ****** had its threads cut too deep, and the pipe failed in the threads. So per code in my area the water heater didn't need to be on a pedestal. So I got out the good ole engine hoist and got it off there, this gained me a few inches in that corner I didn't have before, now I cleaned all the piping up in that corner also, insulated the pipes etc. This also solved the pocketed inlet and discharge lines to the heater that would be a high point for air to get trapped. Here is the fun kicker of the weekend, when I opened up the junction box on the wall, the grounds were only wrapped around each other, no wire nut, that was wire nutted correctly also. Cleaned up the workbench, started to remove some stickers from cabinets also... Moved my cash poster to the celling to cover up the blocked off J box there. When I get the cabinets for above the desk/workbench I will remove that t8 fixture on the celling also at that time.

So here is the before and after. Its a work in progress.

Well, weekend updates...

First order of business was the dryer vent.... I decided that had to go. Alot of rework in that but it is now all inside the house and out of my way.

Alot of work in the attic, but is working out very well and cleaned the garage up a **** ton. Patched the hose up and right after this photo was taken... But this was a huge milestone on separating the spaces of the house and cleaning up the garage flow.

So I moved on to some other house projects but came back to this area yesterday. Moved the tool box out, cleaned behind it etc... Routed my cables through the wall for the tv etc. Sorry for no complete photos with the covers, but home depot had these split covers that worked out amazing... Take it apart put the cable in and re assemble. So much easier than pulling cables through another thing.

So with that done I can move the tool box back 1" from the wall vs the 7 it was away... This made a huge difference in how everything feels.

Finished replacing all light switches in the house, decided to replace the two in the garage while I was at it. Gave the old vice a good cleaning also, fixed some sheetrock that needed patching, and preparing for the cabinets, that is ultimately what led to moving the TV over 24" Every step is a step in the right direction I think. Oh and cleaned up the computer workspace finding a better flow to having it all there.

I figured one more move out with the box to epoxy this area of the floor would be key honestly but all in due time. Trying to decide if I want to rent a pod to move everything into thats on the floors when the truck goes to interior shop and just do the whole thing at one time or what. But hopefully get that figured out soon.

Looking a lot better.

I know a lot of guys like stickers on boxes and cabinets, but I can't go it. Looks way too busy and cluttered. Same with the decor. In a small shop, that's seriously valuable wall space

Thanks man. Yeah I think in a bigger shop its ok but when your so tight and packed in it makes things rougher on the eyes. Feels good being a step closer to some more organization and storage. Purging things on ebay left and right.... Then donated alot of signs and stuff to friends etc. Pass it on down the line to clear my mind and clutter.

Well, its been 10 years since we added one extra outlet to the garage, so figured with my recent addition of a pressure washer shelf it was needed, finally having some source of power close to the doors is a huge improvement. After some thought and debating if I wanted to try to squeeze my *** in a small area to try to drill the top plate, I voted for the sheetrock cut method. Worked out pretty well. Finished photos coming soon after drywall repair is complete with texture. I probably have 1.5 hours in this total. This wall is now the clean wall/display wall, once the cabinets are all installed I will have a better idea on if this wall needs to get fold down work benches or not. The pressure washer shelf is a nice addition for sure, hose reel is on its way so once I get that all done I will shoot a few more photos of that, you can see the wash buckets on the shelf just at the right side of the photos. Next project is adding a switch for my new led lighting in the attic.

Thanks man. I think its a constant battle for those of us doing small shops. I finally have both vehicles where I want them for the moment so shifted focus to the garage to get my life more streamlined.

The weekend updates were not as fun as last. Had to deliver a truck to DFW area so my saturday was toast. But Yesterday the wall patch is repaired from running the wires.

And I got tired of the steel rack hanging on the wall and needed to make room for wall mounting my pressure washer etc. So got the 4" pvc, cut some holes to mount to the studs, and here we are, alot more organized and less clutter looking for sure.

garage17.jpg

Now we get into the fun, I started playing last week with wall mounting the pressure washer to clean up floor space etc. So I added the shelf to the wall, worked great and added some lumber to lock in the front tab on the pressure washer to keep it secure. Bought a new hose and reed off evilbay, now I have 50 foot of flexible pressure washer hose and LOVE IT.

And also I have storage for my wash buckets etc.

WOW I go with "if I did not use it the last 6 months, away it goes, yes it's hard but when I move stuff to get some stuff. Yard sale , give it away , I had stuff from old cars I had , I find someone with the same car and give him a gift, no more I'll keep this in case. R
