Yes, My grandfather used to dump it along the fence-line around the garden so he wouldn't have to weed-eat along the chain link fence. I grew up eating food grown in that garden, and I turned out fine... Actually that may explain some things...

Yes, but as a GJ member you should instead be asking "how can I build a flamethrower torch that will burn my used oil and facilitate the killing of grass with said flame".

My dad used to do that along fences and concrete paths and I feel guilty about it even now. And I am just about the furthest thing possible from a tree hugger...

No, what he should be asking is ‘will oil kill my grass, or should I buy a mini ex to help cut down the weeds, build a pad and a new garage?

It will, but it will also contaminate the soil and never go away. Then, when you sell the property, it might just come back and bite you with a big bill to clean up that area.
While its not good, yes it will go away especially if its just lightly applied and not copious amounts applied and soak in to one area. Bacteria eats oil, pretty fast at that.

If you pour 100's of gallons out and it soaks in deep to soils with little oxygen, then it will take a very long time to naturally clean up.

You can mix used oil with diesel fuel and treat the ends of logs to help reduce splitting as the dry out or putting wood posts in the ground

Yeah, don't do it. Many years ago, power utilities thought it was a great idea to keep the grass from growing in the gravel of their substations, so they sprayed (PCB) transformer oil all over the place. Ask their insurance companies and lawyers how well that worked out.

Is this a second thread about what you can illegally pour on the ground to kill grass while polluting?

Buy something meant to kill grass, till the ground etc.

Don't be that person.

I can remember when I was a kid, mid 70's, my grandfather would pour the used oil along the fence line to kill the grass. That was before they had weedeaters.

Kill it for a while or forever? Kill it forever as nothing will ever grown there again? Different products for each.

My dad was born in 1920 and thought that pouring used motor oil on the weeds on our gravel driveway was a good way of getting ride of both the oil and weeds, or maybe it was just the oil. I don’t know but by the time I was 10 I was telling him that it wasn’t good for the rivers and fish.

The funny thing is those oiled weeds grew as much or more then the un-oiled weeds. When I bought my first house the guy across the street from me would do it too. He was born in the late forties and didn’t think it was harmful at all. Well, we live in western Oregon and it rains a lot and oil is lighter then water and will be carried away by the runoff straight to the storm sewer and into the nearby river.

So, get this, that guy across the street was a longtime member and onetime president of the trout fishing conservation group. I kid you not.

Don't water you grass with oil, that's silly. Dump it down rat/mouse holes. It'll dispatch the rodents and put the oil back in the ground where it came from for future generations to extract and enjoy.
