I am in the process of revamping my truck tool box and tools. I took my 2 pork chop boxes and made one full length wheel well box. Plenty of room now, even though I cut off 2 feet I also made them full depth. So now I am sorting through all my hand tools. I usually keep them in a box store gatemouth bag. Those bags usually last a couple years before the are falling apart, but they are cheap. Well, they were. Now a $29 bag is $59 and I can’t justify spending that much on a crappy bag. So I have been hunting. I found one or two nylon bags, but nothing great. Thought about making my own out of kydex, but I just don’t have the time. I found a leather bag almost identical to the one here.

it was $139, which is about 3-4 years of nylon bags, but looks like it will do a better job keeping tools sorted, versus laying in a heap on the bottom. I am going to try to do 10 more years before I retire, so hopefully this bag holds up.

Any better options? I could use another bag or 2, just interested in seeing any other decent quality ideas.

This is my modified pork chop boxes.

That Occidental bag could last for decades, and is probably repairable.

I have worked with a couple guys who had them, and they are beautiful.

Occidental is the standard for tool belts for ironworkers and millwrights. I have a set… but, honestly, I rarely use a tool belt on a job. We use Rubbermaid carts now.

Not to hijack this thread… but speaking of the toolboxes built into the bed rails of new pickups…

One of the companies that have laser measuring equipment, like WeatherTech uses, should laser measure those openings… and make a series of hand boxes that perfectly fit those openings.

I used to sell and I own a Veto tool bag. https://vetopropac.com/ 5 year warranty, plus they will send out a back for you to use while yours is sent in. I had one customer that bought a Veto tool bag, charged it to the shop account. For some reason he didn't like it an sold it to another tech with the same company. That guy used it for four years and had some issue with it. I found out it was billed to the company so the warranty is still good and told him to send it back and sent him a copy of the invoice. Veto received it and told him to keep the new back they sent him to use. All at no charge for anything shipping was covered by Veto.

The bag I have I used five years on the job, every day it got dragged around. I still have it and keep it loaded up. It is about 15 years old now.

I have the Occidental bag in my truck, but it's so heavy that I leave it there full of tools that aren't used daily and carry this one to and from jobsites

The best bag I've ever had was one of these

https://www.ebay.com/itm/354260165182?hash=item527b8d223e:g:O2wAAOSwe2FjE-hd&amdata=enc:AQAHAAAAoIP2RJMODlm1pfMgHWYLnfCu7sAY9fs53mFPKTPnrB0aT/0aXzsAYAvzqYlmcZynJ1RuAyc+ee7PSXhi8j7+4Uh2U6oRFOD10Z8zqnAny7pww4BLa4zgksSHgFEnFiis4SCuRmTbbgKRYTYDVS/DLsWE/ekN5rKHSmlEj+X2I0Y4Sp3vO5RHy+TwdJEkT8U5tJHsaTMgg5WEmkOOzkxvdy8=|tkp:Bk9SR5S5jpbIYQ

It was stolen along with $5000 worth of other tools off my truck. When I tried to replace it, there was nothing available so I bought the Occidental, which is a second place finisher, but it's not a close second. It's also 8X12 so it might have a pretty good chance of fitting in that box.

Thats a pretty narrow box. I cant see many tool bags fitting in there well. Am I missing something here?
No, it’s a narrow space, 8” wide max, with 2 , 1/4” flanges at the top. I have been using those gatemouth bags, and they just kind of squished into plac, but I frequently had to pull the entire bag out in order to dig through for a particular tool.
I have the leather bag in there now, it is a wee bit wider than advertised, but fits in there snug. It won’t be coming out often, but all my tools are in a spot, and everything is accessible.
I am considering buying a bucket boss liner, cutting it in half and mounting it to the back wall of the tool box as a catch all for small parts. Maybe doing some kydex holsters for flap wheels, cut off wheels, etc
