The clamps aren't deflecting, they're clamping on the radius and not the "foot". You can see what is happening in his last picture. Jim, you could keep your spacing and use the clamps you have but only at an angle to the slat instead of perpendicular to it. And then buy some "F" clamps!

Looks like a great design! My initial thought is that I'd line up the side door with your stair way. I'd also make your center post solid enough to mount a jib hoist off of it, here's a reference.

I back mine up on a small set of ramps, set the brake, and then hoist the front up essentially like you did. I feel comfortable with my rigging and skip the jack stands. Sometimes I really have to use allot of force to loosen the bolts, enough that I'd be concerned if I only had jack stands...
