    Power for my Shed

I would think twice before installing a relatively powerful fluorescent light in that small space. Garages and workshops are one thing; offices are quite another, and they usually require a VERY different sort of lighting. Fluorescents mounted on low-ish ceilings can easily create "harsh"...

Is there anything special needed to use these lights in my pole barn?

You post an example, ask how to install/use it, and make comments such as "a bargain price for a LOT of light" which, erroneous as they may be, certainly appear to be specific to that example. But apparently, we're supposed to completely ignore that example, and somehow magically know that you...

Suggestions on a rechargeable underhood work light?

Why not something which runs off the car's own 12VDC supply, such as: http://www.baycoproducts.com/index.php/productsbayco/incandescent-lights/SL-412-detail http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/132048/314/tools/worklights_flashlights_spotlights/work_lights_drop_lights/?quantity=1...

Why not just use incandescent lighting?

As the saying goes, I didn't have time to write a short answer. ;) I have (and mostly "had") a pretty good handle on the overall shape of the space; but the details on how you plan to raise the ceiling are indeed helpful. What I was mostly hoping for was more about how you were planning to...

    8ft double T-12's "HO" @ $15 on craigslist - good deal?

Good move. For reasons we can discuss in more detail if need be, I generally don't care for those "tandem" fixtures, regardless of tube type. In virtually every case, individual twin-tube 4-foot fixtures work better, and cost roughly the same even after you use twice as many of them. Those...

Is there anything special needed to use these lights in my pole barn?

OK... So that's 300 ft.^2 per fixture, with lots of help from the translucent "shade" and reflective ceiling. Given that, I'd say my ~200 ft.^2 guesstimate for the metal-shaded versions with no uplight or diffusion was, if anything, generous.

    wiring in my pole barn

Which will leave each room totally dark if/when that one breaker trips or needs to be thrown for any reason. So like I said, you want to split the lighting load in any one room between two circuits/breakers. Those circuits/breakers do NOT necessarily need to be dedicated to one room; so two...

    8ft double T-12's "HO" @ $15 on craigslist - good deal?

Welcome. Sorry to hear that. OK. But the fact that you have not even started the construction process yet is significant. In a word, NO. No matter how attractive the price may seem in the short term, you'd be setting yourself up for grief in the long term. T12 fixtures are woefully...

Is there anything special needed to use these lights in my pole barn?

That is a debatable conclusion, at best, particularly by the time you account for the seller's rather outrageous shipping charges and the cost of bulbs (which are apparently NOT included; and you probably wouldn't want them if they were). For example...

    which t8 fixtures?

What I (or you) "think" doesn't matter. If the fixture in question was really safe for surface mounting, it would not carry that warning. None of that matters one whit, either. Those fixtures are NOT suitable for surface-mounting PERIOD. My Ghod, man... Can't you even READ?!? What part...

    Breaker Locations \ Gen Hookup

I'd say "losing the contents of the fridge" is a pretty big "Besides...". You are apparently laboring under yet another misconception here. You don't necessarily need to power the whole house in order to make effective use of a properly installed permanent standby generator. Models as...

Whoa, Nellie! Three posts in less than 20 minutes, and you're all over the map. The FIRST thing we need to address is some of your assumptions about those CFLs... I presume you mean these...

Critique My Electrical and Lighting Layout (20' x 23')

Ouch. That does make things tight. Just to throw a dart (I am NOT necessarily recommending these makes/models/etc.), here are a few representative samples. http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/Ingersoll-Rand-SS3L3-Air-Compressor/p688.html Dimensions listed as: 20L x 23W x 66H...

    Back Feeding With A Generator

I see that you are given to understatement. I covered this in some detail in http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3629069&postcount=7, starting about halfway down the post. ;)

Why not just use incandescent lighting?

I'd be willing to wager that those were old T12 tubes/fixtures, running off magnetic ballasts. Things have changed A LOT since those days. Modern T8 and T5 fluorescent fixtures, using electronic ballasts, typically have guaranteed cold-start performance down to 0-deg. F.; and they are MUCH...
