    Framing nail length

3"x0.131 collated full head nails are acceptable to IRC code. You have a choice for the length of nail based on the number of fasteners, how they are fastened, and what they are fastening along with nail type and shank size. So for example: Stud to stud, face nail = - [10d] 3"x0.131 @ 16"o.c...

    Are these hurricane ties?

Those are rafter ties. If you don't have them then your roof will push out at the rafter heel. Typically, these kickers are only installed this way when your ceiling joists run perpendicular to the rafter direction. Code requires 2x4 and at each rafter to tie the roof into the ceiling diaphragm...

    Dealing with GC's insurance

I don't think I'd want the GT3 anywhere near an insurance claim. If the VIN is listed for any claim, you can kiss your value goodbye. Pay for a cut and detail. Also, it sounds like the building wasn't finished, but you had a CNC + the GT3 in there. Hopefully you had a Substantial Competion...

Hanging sheetrock from these rafter ties?

You don't need opinions. Even got the 'ol "collar tie" thrown in as usual. All you need is the answer in black & white. It's real easy, it's in the code book. The math has been done for you. The thickness of the drywall is negligible. ^^ said early on. Just look at IRC Table R802.5.1(1) and you...

Insulating Garage Ceiling - Need Recommendation

I don't think you have a 16" thick floor. That recessed area you measured is to allow you to walk out from the Kitchen and not hit your head. What I think they may have done is build a false ceiling using the bottom of the beam to dictate height. You would need a beam parallel to the front wall...

Adding additional framing for the attic storage in the garage, does this look safe?

I think everyone got the bits and pieces right. So restating some of what was said and adding a little more: The 2x6x20's are your rafter ties keeping your walls from pushing out. In the old days they were placed every 4'. They can be as little as 2x4 for their purpose, but were usually bumped...

My garage was butchered. Fix it or leave it alone?

Fer cryin out loud. The previous owner came to GJ and asked how to raise the garage ceiling height. And just like this thread and every other garage roof question, he got a bunch of comments from people who don't even know what a collar tie, rafter tie, ridge beam, truss, or hinge point is and...

If your garage is 24' wide with a gable, then the span is 12'. The quick example I used based on assumptions reduced a 2x8 to around 12', which is close, not "plenty conservative." You do the exact figuring of what is existing, the new height, the reduction factor, etc. for a general idea of...

Not sure if the sentences are the same thought saying new 2x8 rafter ties would span 18'-2", or if you switched gears and are saying the existing rafters are 2x8 and span 18'-2" for your snow load (guessing 20psf?). So if it's 2x8 rafters, if you raise rafter ties 1/3 then .67 of 18'-2" is...

30 x48 Garage Gable end details with scissor truss

Your framer doesn't know what they don't know. Your inspector doesn't know what they don't know. Most framing threads here on GJ has commenters responding about "no loads on gable end walls." They only know about gravity loads from above, they don't know about lateral loads, occuring "sideways"...

Top Coating To Smooth Rough Concrete?

@frontierhistorian Note that other's successes is with smooth concrete, not exposed aggregrate finish. I have heard from other people trying to use a grinder on the exposed aggregrate eating up the discs really quick (the surface just varies too much). You may have better luck, as yours looks to...

Not Sure How To Respond To An Architect's Plan

Time for a new architect. Many architects will spec typical structural members based on tables, maybe perform small calcs on simple beams, but usually don't want to stick their necks out too far. So they have a structural engineer do the calcs for them, no reason to feel inadequate relying on...

Not Sure How To Respond To An Architect's Plan

Think of a "collar" tie as the "collar" up high on your shirt - it keeps all the individual threads in the opening for your neck from pulling apart and unraveling. On a roof, they keep the high point of the rafters from pulling away from the ridge. They are not substantial structural elements...

Not Sure How To Respond To An Architect's Plan

No. Collar ties and rafter ties (doubling as ceiling joists) perform entirely different functions. You've just described where a rafter tie should be located. If it is simultaneously being a ceiling joist, then it must be further sized to support the ceiling finish/loads above it in the attic.
