I'd also add some steel band iron, attached horizontally, to the walls. I've heard of thieves using chainsaws to cut a section of wall out to get at a car. The chainsaw blade would theoretically be ruined when it hits one.
Here's another cool site with barn plans. I really like the Pine Knoll. I like having doors on all sides and room for a shop. The loft upstairs can be converted later.

I was surfing the net and came across this site that has 261 garage plans. Definately worth bookmarking. Many of the designs have in-law apartments above. I found at least 10 that I liked. (no - I don't work for them)
