    "Old School" Lighting Opinions?

I plan to heat with an electric boiler actually :) In my case, Per DTE (Detroit Edison) in Michigan, a meter beyond your house meter is a commercial rate in residential zoning. I won't post specific pricing details, but basically my home is ~ 10 cents per KWh, and my new garage will be about 4...

    "Old School" Lighting Opinions?

Thanks all for the replies, I've decided to use them for task lighting like several of you have mentioned, and gift the rest to my brother and dad for Christmas. I did some tests, and as you have stated, the light output would be so-so even with ultra high power bulbs like originally used for an...

    "Old School" Lighting Opinions?

Hey gents, I'm wiring my 30x38x12' garage (with cathedral style truss ceiling to 15'), and happened to be gifted 30+ (some may be too beat up) porcelain coated "barn" style lights. I need to re-wire them, but they have ultra high quality ceramic sockets and the green shade is just too cool. I...

Need quick help with concrete "height line" measurement / insulated edge slab foam?

Re: Need quick help with concrete "height line" measurement / insulated edge slab foa Awesome, thanks gents. I figured that would be how they do it. Sometimes these simple questions are the hardest to find

Need quick help with concrete "height line" measurement / insulated edge slab foam?

Need quick help with concrete "height line" measurement / insulated edge slab foam? Hey all, I have a stupid question I've been searching for 2 hours to find on the internet. Keep in mind I'm a novice in concrete (why I'm reluctantly paying someone to do a project at my house! haha) How does...

Pex layout; Big Tube With Wide Spacing, Or Tight Spacing Avoiding Damage During Pour?

Thanks all for the input. You are right, PEX is tougher than I give it credit for. Yes, there shouldn't be an issue to get a conveyor truck in there for the pour. I laid down a 10 Mil vapor barrier and then 2" XPS, including the sides where the slab would meet the footings, so I feel confident...

Pex layout; Big Tube With Wide Spacing, Or Tight Spacing Avoiding Damage During Pour?

Hey all, I’m having a PEX layout dilemma. I already laid out my 30’x38’ ½” rebar in 16” grids on chairs for my 6” slab. I realized my heat load calcs were wrong and I shouldn’t have my ½” Pex in a 16” spacing, but at 12” or less to have a good chance of getting my garage heated in the coldest...

I looked at a 44x56x16 building - It seemed small

I used Masons string to make my layout and then drive my truck and car in there like I was going to park them, and used some cardboard to layout the workbenches, etc. My 30x38 seems tiny until I mocked it up with vehicles. Prescriptive really helps!

    40 x 40 first quote in

I love visiting Cali, my sister lives there, but I feel bad for you guys on expenses. My permit was extra expensive because I back up to protected wetlands :headscrat, and it was 400 dollars total.

    40 x 40 first quote in

Wow, gotta love labor costs in Texas! Up in Michigan last year I had 3 quotes for a crappy 2x4 stick built 30x38 with no electrical, no windows, and 2 garage doors and a 4" slab that came in at $47,000, $51,000 , and a nutjob at $72,000. Housing is in such a high demand no one wants to waste...

Concrete Slab Saw Cut Spacing in 30x38; Opinions?

I've done a lot of searching and opinions vary widely. Any insight on control joint spacing in my 30x38 slab? I'll be laying out the PEX for my radiant heat this weekend and want to plan for sleeving around the control joints (I know this is debated but I have free PVC and the time to do it) I...

Need Help / Opinions on Base Compaction Flatness for Insulated Slab

Thanks Gents, I was actually thinking of renting an early entry saw and doing the cuts myself that evening, so it sounds like I can just skip the fiber then and save some money. I feel my 16" grid of 1/2" bar should be sufficient for the rest of the shrinkage  Now I just need to find...

What are the purpose of these beams?

I'm by no means a structural guru, but most 2x4 based trusses are not rated for much more than enough of a live load that you could have a sheet of plywood on the other side and shimmy up there to fix a roof leak, etc. I would not store much more than tubing, a few extra boards, etc. up there...

What are the purpose of these beams?

If I may add my 2 cents, I added 2 rows of 2x4 supports to the bottom of my trusses (albeit my garage is 30 foot wide), tied into the end walls, and it greatly increased the structural rigidity of not only the end walls, but of the bottoms of the trusses also! Keep in mind the bottom trusses...
