Vintage Craftsman Bandsaw - DC Conversion

I know that. I'm wondering why saw the need to purchase a DC motor and controller instead of a using a VFD and retaining the AC motor it came with, if the goal was just to slow it down.

Why didn't you use a Variable Frequency Drive?

    Battery terminals: Crimp vs Solder

I'd like to know as well. Was thinking about picking up one on eBay, but there seems to have been quite a few complaints of some of the crimping dies being undersized.

Real close to ditching my SAE stuff...

I need both SAE and Metric, even though my main job is an aircraft mechanic. Why you ask? Because when the the planes are off making money, the ground support equipment and vehicles need maintenance too. The GSE... is a pain in the ***. Chassis will be SAE, Engine will be metric.

Who would ever need a 12-point socket?

The GE CF6-80C2 jet engines we have hanging on our 767s are all 12 point. I don't like carrying extra weight around in my tool bag, so the 6 point sockets stay in my tool box. In my line of work, if I run across something that needs a 6 point to get it off then odds are fastener needs to be...

Craftsman raised panel wrenches are now being made in China with pics

Guess I have zero reason now to step into a Sears store. They won't be missed when they slide into the oblivion of history.

Had a chat with Craftsman higher-ups

Color me skeptical. I'm done playing games with Sears and COO, they can f*** off and die for all I care now. If they want to bring me back in, they need to bring EVERYTHING in the Craftsman line back to the States. Then they need to issue an apology for screwing consumers with the chinese...

Whats the best spray on penetrating oil?

Aero-Kroil is good stuff. Used it a few weeks ago to remove some inspection panel screws on a Beech 18 that we are restoring. The screws haven't been off since the mid 80s, and have been exposed to the elements. About 1/3 of the heads rounded out by just looking at them, so we drilled the...

    USA Made Vacuum Gauge?

I love my job (mainly working on aircraft interiors). However, my boss has expanded my duties to fixing the dinosaur ground support equipment as well. I'm in need of a manifold vacuum gauge, looking for one made in the USA preferably without the Snap On price. Any suggestions?

    Who makes Snap-on's Multimeters?

My guess would have been EZ Digital (formerly LG Precision), but they don't list any handheld DMMs on their website anymore. http://www.ezdigital.co.kr It could also be Samsung, they make the some of the chips used in them.

    Recommend Me A Truck

Really can't go wrong with a Ranger. Don't even look at a regular cab unless you want your knees in your stomach. Parts are reasonable and very plentiful. The biggest issues you'll probably run in to are OEM ball joints and the clutch slave cylinder. If you get one with the 3.0 V6, the...

Whats the most dis-liked tool in your shop ?

Heli-Coils, (Not So)Easy Outs, Tap and Dies, and our shop-owned air tools. Oh, and our collection of craptastic chinese grease guns. Boss is too cheap to buy remotely decent air tools, so we get bottom of the barrel Northern Industrial or Horrible Freight (which would be fine if people...
