    Shop Bathroom ?

Wrap something like foam around the pipe where it pokes up through the slab. That way you won’t have to chisel out the concrete when you go to install the toilet flange. Don’t ask me how I know.

Something to keep a winch warm in winter

Silicon heating pad would work well and be safer than a light bulb. Like we use on oil pans. They are in stock at NAPA around here. Put it on a timer so it doesn’t run up your electric bill.

    Nail Type for T1-11 Panels?

I don't like the look of staples but I've seen a lot of T 1-11 put on with them. I've used finish nails with an air nailer before with no problems but you've got to be careful.

House Water filter - high levels of rust/sediment

There are a lot of ways to get iron out of the water but those cartridge filters aren't really the right tool for the job. It would probably help to get the water tested to find out how much iron you're dealing with. The standard is less than 1 ppm (something like 0.3 ppm). Our well water is...

How to prevent draft from side exit bathroom fan?

If you're in a cold climate and the duct goes through the wall down low (basement), yes, cold air will backdraft through the duct/fan. This sounds like your situation. For some people a good wall cap with flap/spring/gasket will be good enough. The best setup is an in-line backdraft damper...

    Shop Vac worth a darn?

Just got a Fein. It's definitely better quality than the typical shop vac. More expensive also. And it's quiet. One feature I wanted was the auto start with power tools. Turn on the chop saw (or whatever) and the vac comes on/off automatically. You can also order a plug in that does the same...

    Fire Detection Ideas

OK. How about a weight on a chain held up by a string. Fire starts, burns string, weight swings on the chain like a pendulum, starts the motion detector camera and email to you. I just made that up but maybe something like this could work? I know some people will not like this idea, but some...

Can I Pat Myself On The Back For A Moment?

Congrats Maddog. Passing the mechanical engineering PE exam was a high point for me too. Before deciding to take the exam (or for some who never take it) the thinking might be that it won't make much difference. After passing the exam that thinking usually changes. . . .

Concrete placement - Chute too short to reach ??

We used the pump trailer twice - it worked great and was way less $ than a pump truck. On one pour we built a wooden chute to the basement in to a wheel barrow, then down the hall in to a 4 wheeled cart we built to straddle a trench to get to the far end of the hall in a basement - what a job!

I have had good luck using Off or Cutters bug spray.

Looking for help selecting a radon fan

We've always used the 4" Fantech in-line fans with the white plastic housing. That's the only fan we recommend for sub slab radon mitigation. Note that you and also install an HRV to ventilate a basement/crawlspace. Not as good as the sub slab system but usually brings radon down a few points.

Legality of living in a "garage"

Reminds me of that movie- The Worlds Fastest Indian. The short answer is no - building codes would not allow it. The somewhat longer answer is that you could get away with it in many places because there is no code official snooping around to tell you that you can't do it. When we built our...

New Garage / Shop Floor - Slope or No Slope

I regretted sloping my floor towards the over head doors. When the snow melts off my vehicles the water runs to the doors and they freeze shut. On my new garage the floors will slope to the floor drains.
