Just flatten a scrap piece of copper pipe for a backup, make it as long or short as it needs to be, hell you could even sweat a couple elbows on and make it go around corners!

Then maybe the OP is having trouble by using the wrong tungsten or is grinding it with something that is contaminating it?

Want a neat cut , use a circular saw with a diamond blade and have a helper with a water hose at a trickle on the blade. Make the first cut at about 1" to score it then recut it full, dig it out run pipe backfill and repair.
