Oughta give us an update on the mini grinder/polishing wheel when you get it up and running. I almost picked one up yesterday when I went for some $9.99 (:eyecrazy:) torque wrenches. It looks like a pretty solid piece of kit for $29.
I just snagged 2 of the Pittsburgh Pro HF torque wrenches for $9.99 each with the newspaper ad coupon. You can't go wrong for that price, especially with a lifetime warranty.
I tried to get the Milwaukee hole saw kit at my local HD (Wendover Ave, Greensboro, NC) and they looked at me like deer in the headlights when I told them it was ringing up in stores elsewhere for $20.04. They have 3 in stock. I wasn't about to pay $80 for the kit. YMMV...
I did something similar to what I believe you're thinking up. I used aluminum angle at 1/16" thickness because it's a light duty bench and I don't have the tools nor the skills to properly lay down iron. Two layers of 1/2" ply with 1/8" Masonite on top. I'm very pleased with the result.

Dewalt 20v Max drill with case, charger and 2 batteries (model no. DCD771C2 for $90 at my local store in Greensboro, NC. Not sure if it is worth jumping on. They had 5 or 6 when I was in store on Sunday.
