I'm a truck driver so hear people arguing all day and mostly ignore them so don't take this as taking anyone's side.....
First off. that's some beautiful property you have. Congratulations!
Sounds like you've " turned your back" to the big city and embracing country life. Sure don't blame you...
Just lived through some SHTF. Wild fire blew through our community. Long story short we are very grateful to still have a house.
So power can go out in the summer. A couple weeks in our case.
After about 10 days we were all allowed back in. Fidge and freezer were destroyed. No way that smell...
If the book shelving is even with the the edge of the posts then reclaimed foam sheets continuous will save a lot of heat that goes through the studs.
When doing a reno on my house (part of it was changing to hardi siding) I was debating on doing out side foam in addition to the traditional...
If it were me I'd just rent the largest heater the circuts and or extention cords from the power source can handle. Small price to pay to get it done in the time frame you have.
If there wasn't enough electricity then rent a propane torpedo heater to get it up to temperature then use the...
I'm guessing if you have property big enough for pole barns you have something to plow a driveway? What's worked for me is if the roof is not to high
a few minutes with a snow rake to start the "avalanche". Then if one makes sure the area around the barn is clear before it snows just drive by...
Myself ? I'd go plan B. Maybe I'm weird but my shop is about 100 feet away from my home with trees in between and I like it that way. Keeping the work and hobbies away from home life is a bonus to me.
I'm about the same age as you. Not retired but have worked seasonal my whole life so have...
If the problem is only with the silica then silica free type automotive should be fine if that's what you have in there? That type is fairly common
around here at least . Then test and no need to change/dispose.
Peppermint oil works excellent especially if you put some drops around before the mice get established. The plug in sonic units work for me also. For traps I switched to the black plastic spring traps from a dollar store. The way they are designed you can throw over hand and release the spring...
Imho the block looks great as it it. The reason it looks unfinished is the boring (to me) white doors and trim. I'd maybe paint the doors with a faux wood type theme. Bronze maybe. Block buildings have always looked solid to me. Suitable for for an estate type property if trimmed out classy...
Touch of style is cool. It's your shop so has to impress only YOU. Will be easy for paint shop to match near any colour.
Didn't match the shop but painted the "farm" truck on the cheap. Found a 5 gallon pail of the red I wanted. Had most of it left over of course. Was parked next to the chicken...
In my shop ( work in progress) I went back and forth on different ideas. Even picked up a set of spiral stairs. Best for me was a rolling ladder. It's what I'm using now. Kinda steep but has handrails and like you will be using a forklift to place the heavy stuff anyways. Never seen a home depot...
Last year or so my shop floor has been "soilcrete". Built up a few lifts of native gravelly soil with a bit of crush. Last 3" I rototilled in some bags of cement. Raked it reasonably smooth and ran over it with a 1000 pounder a few times.
Works real good. It's easily reversible and super cheap...
Looked for and found a leaking water line by using a steel rod and stethoscope.
Had good idea where line was which helped. Put the rod on the ground and put the stethoscope on top. You'll hear running water. Worked surprisingly well.
Leave a faucet running enough where it doesn't back up and go...
