What to buy on discount as a young Diesel tech about to enter the field

The box in my signature pic is a Mac tech 1000 with end cab that I used for around 14 years give or take. I am not using it now because I am in the field but it held up nicely loaded to the hilt and frequently moved with a forklift and rolled over rough concrete.

What to buy on discount as a young Diesel tech about to enter the field

Angle wrenches to 1 5/8 would be a good investment. I have a set of Mac angle wrenches that are good wrenches but if I had them to buy again I would go with the 30/60 SO wrenches. 15,18,and 24 adjustable wrenches. Metric combination wrenches to 36 mm. Angle and straight die grinders. Tap...

    CAT boxes

Re: cat boxes I cant speak for the boxes but most of the tools I have bought through Cat come in a package with a Cat part number but when you open it it will have Snap-On on it.

Does Mac Tools have anything that is super great?

Didnt know Mac had wrenches like these but have not had a Mac tool truck in years. Nice looking wrench.

    roloc surface prep discs

I like these also. They cut aggressively enough without being too aggressive on aluminum. Although they are more expensive, in my experience they last longer especially around grease, oil, uncured paint, and some sealants. The scotch brite rolocs will quickly become clogged when the bristle discs...

    VIM Hex Socket Set Recommendation

The advantage in my mind is that you will be able to use 9 different sizes in metric and sae all on a 1/4 ratchet. With the master set you can only use the 4 smallest sizes before having to move up to a 3/8 ratchet. This can in some situations give greater access than you would otherwise have...

    VIM Hex Socket Set Recommendation

I have both of these but in different brands. Unless you work on some automotive or large equipment I think the small stubby kit will work any most any home application. The stubby kit bits are all the same length and 1/4 inch drive. The large kit has all drive sizes and will cover way more...

Are Mac tools boxes as good of quality as Snap-on or Matco boxes?

I used the Mac tech 1000 box for about 13 years of hard usage with no problems. I work in the field now so I do not use it but if I were to buy again I would go with the Mac box if the price was right.

    Air or Electric

I think either way would be ok except for your compressor is a 5 gallon. The impact will drain that too fast and the compressor will always be trying to build air pressure. Probably go cordless in this case.

    Armstrong indexing ratchets

I had the fine tooth Mac version. It works great and you can get to some bolts with ease that would otherwise be a pain, the problem with mine was after about 5 uses had to have the Mac guy warranty it, for the ratcheting mechanism i believe and then after a few more uses the pins in the...
