DAK brand open end wrench set?

I posted this on the main HAMB board. I recall my dad having a set of what I believe is a set of DAK open end wrenches that were probably bought in the 1950s. They came in a red roll up carrier, unfortunately they grew legs over the years. The outside of them had an odd cut, angular, not a...

    Milling Machine

Better off making a friend with someone that has a Bridgeport than spending $439 on that one. $439 will buy lots of beer (standard payment for services rendered.. or free lunch). My Bridgeport (1967 vintage) is getting old and I'll be looking for another one maybe next year. I'd sell mine to...

Sheetrock ceiling a bad idea in this case?

When I do mine, I'll consider using thin plywood, possibly sanded on one side. I'll have to price it out. I'm not that concerned with appearance and can lay a piece of screen stock over the seams so it looks neater. Pre-paint the plywood as well.

pick up your nails and screws

I had a house & garage roof done in 2003, they took the house down to the sheathing. I had the whole house resided in 2007. In both cases, they did a great clean up. The roofer had a rip-off crew take the roof off and I found 1 scrap of shingle. The siding crew went over everything with a...

pick up your nails and screws

Old glass also comes up in the spring with frost heave. Been picking it out of my garden for 25 years.

Things you've learned, life lessons in the shop.

Be careful around the air compressor if it has a belt. If the belt has no guard, turn that side towards the wall. I stopped in to see a friend at his shop maybe 20 years ago. He had a huge Ingersoll compressor.. so old it had a WPA tag on it. He had the box off the compressor and it was...

Installing New Garage Door: Windows or None?

I have high windows on my insulated garage door, impossible to reach in through without decimating the door. Now I've read this, I will be adding something so people can't see in. Even at 6' tall you need to stand on something to see in, which could be done pretty easily.

    Cost of tree removal

I worked with a guy that was doing a DIY tree removal one weekend... a limb clocked him on the head, he was dead in a second. A couple of us gave him names of pros to call. I have one hemlock I want gone in the spring, I'll price it out. It's close to electrical wires so no way I'd try it. I...

Building permits and county bull sh@t

I'm on the fence regarding a 10-12' extension I'd like to put on my garage. I know they look at aerial photos from year to year. I did have a permit when I did my upstairs on the house and we had to jump through a few flaming hoops midway on the job. Any electrical work has been done by an...

Freemason's symbol in my basement and garage.

I agree. I have to go through some of my dad's things to see if he had any. He was a high-degree Mason and past master of a local lodge, twice.

    Identify this piece!

They're usually set up for gang-milling slots and things like that. The arbor should come with a variety of spacers that are very accurate in length.

How do I fix this bad surface finish?

Outside of taking a finish pass, there's not much you can do with it. Castings also may not clean up as well as wrought materials, like plate and bar stock. Part of the problem is having to use such a small diameter end mill. Something like that I'd use a 3/8" or 1/2" end mill that I keep in...

    Kerosene Heater mishap

I have a very similar heater from Lowes and have used it maybe 8 times this season. I'm funny about running in unattended. I'll start it up (garage door open, fuel it outside too) and keep an eye on it. I have a separate shop in the garage with an electric heater, so I can do something else as...
