what is a good economical lift to purchase?

I,m torn between a lift vs. pit. I,m afraid the lift will be in the way when I need a wood shop,I can cover the pit. But a lift would be handy rotating tires, pulling transmissions etc..,yet a pit is cheaper and requires less headroom. I,m still on the bubble on that one!
