Please advise me on heating my attached 2 car garage in New York

Your description of your house sounds exactly like mine (incl the steps to the 1st floor). First I agree with those posters who say that heating the garage just to make the 2nd floor warmer is really a loser. You would be better off framing the garage ceiling lower and using high R board or...

    Lightning strike killed AC

fwiw get your insurance company involved right away - at least notify them what happened. About 1-1/2 years ago an excavator pulled out our neutral wire of our service. One of the issues was our oven. We ended up spending over $1900 on just repairing that with all the calls/recalls to the...

    Fuel Oil Transfer Suggestions

This has got to be the worst advice posted in this thread. I am only aware of NEW oil tanks being pressure tested at 5-7 psi. The poster even says he blew apart one of the tanks. Pressurizing an old tank is just really foolish.

    Condensate Pump Alarms?

^^^^ This Those two wires aren't for an alarm. They are connected to a second float switch, a little higher that the one that operates the pump. They are normally closed. If water gets above the pump switch and trips this one it opens the circuit. As justinjoyal said, break into the low voltage...

Low Voltage thermostat(s) into gang box?

Most Honeywell (and probably others) offer adapter plates like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00096JC72/?tag=atomicindus08-20 Available almost anywhere they sell Honeywell thermostats. As far as operating 2 units from one stat goes. . . I would only do it with a relay (unless you are comfy...

This ^^^ I've wired my two houses that I built and I can't imagine what it would be like without a good linesman pliers (I also use Klein)

Inline H2O check valve restriction on flow rate?

I'm not sure I get this Lu-Max. On every recirc line I've seen the pump is on the return run, near the water heater and the check valve is between the pump and the water heater - at the cold water inlet to the heater. It's purpose is to prevent the cold water from flowing thru the pump in...

    Should I get a Goodman??

fwiw, I have 6 condensing units in our house. Two were Goodman. After a few years I noticed the paint was fading badly on these two. They are both on a north side, 0 direct sun. When I opened the panel on one to replace the tstat wire that some rodent munched on I saw that almost every sheet...

    Light faintly glowing

This ^^^^ I have some small led candelabra bulbs in outdoor fixtures that never 'turn off'. The small current thru the lit 3 way switches is enough to energize the leds a little.

    Ceiling Insulation R53 vs R45?

Well, that is true but not the whole story. Assuming your % savings is correct (its not, close but its not because it doesn't compare the 'total' R factor of the ceiling, that would include air spaces and other structural elements that provide some insulation. That would change the %...

A look at energy sources and prices

An interesting thread. Thanks to the OP for starting it. No comparison of system installation & operation cost is complete without taking into account the cost of the equipment, the efficiency of the equipment, the annual cost of the fuel and the expected payback (for higher cost equipment...
