A chill can be as simple as a steel plate/block of sufficient size to **** the heat right out of an area quickly. One would just spray some graphite or whatnot carbon on it, and it'll keep it from sticking to the casting. Chill practice is a bit of an art. Later on they would use Chromite or...

Nodular is not what you're describing, at all. It's marginally harder, but machines more like a steel with less powdery and more stringy chips. One old name for it is "semi-steel". There are nodular irons with machinability indices from 70 all the way up to 140, so in general, they are very...

To determine if it's nodular for sure, you'd need a sample which can be polished / etched and micrographs taken to look for graphite flakes vs graphite spheres. I don't think you can do it nondestructively and get anything more than "we think," LOL.

You're thinking the right way. The insert piece has to have a gap around it so that the cast metal can flow around it and carry heat in there. Ideally, one would put a "lump" around this area and then later machine it off. That would make sure you have plenty of hot metal flowing around the...

To be more clear, I wouldn't use the term "geometric transition," I'd use the words "abrupt change in section thickness." You can have smooth flowing transitions that handle load well, but square corners involving abruptly necked-down sections are notorious.

Metallurgist here. You are correct that the wrought iron / steel has a higher melting point, and if thick enough, they will stay in there and provide strength in tension, which is exactly what cast iron ***** at. If the steel is very fine, like a wire, and you are pouring a lot of metal past...

torpedo heater experts please step inside...

This heater is several years old and started doing this. It produces heat and doesn't stink, but the popping is driving me nuts. When it's cold, sometimes the popping blows the flame out and the thing can't be trusted to start (it has a thermostat which is handy for unattended operation). Took...
