Just for fun, if you are of a certain age- do you still have any of your first tools?

Damn straight- the string instrument repair shop that I joined when I was 22 was very traditional and demanded that I make my own planes, calipers, chisels, hammers, etc. to traditional patterns and very high standards, and I still have every one. I learned a lot there..."don't buy it, make it"...

    Electric nibbler or shears?

thanks, I'll look at the flanger. I have a box of clecos, they are really good to have, and cheap. Appreciate all the input. I have had this sidecar outfit since 1982, and lots of years it was my only transportation. I took the body off to paint it and was horrified to see that my old patches...

    Electric nibbler or shears?

I have all the hand tools and a bead roller, etc., just that my previous sheet metal work has been repair rather than starting from scratch. Aircraft shears was all I needed til now. I have some tight curves so maybe a nibbler will be best for me. Window shopping I see a vast price range for...

    Electric nibbler or shears?

I am building a vehicle body from scratch- 20 ga. steel. To make the long curved cuts from a template, should I buy a nibbler or shear? I don't have big air in my shop, so I need electric tools. Any advice on brands? Thanks!

    water off roof collection

Good topic. Modern and 48Ron, if you google "water privatization" you will read some horror stories about what we will be facing pretty soon. Many people say that clean safe water owned by a municipality and distributed at low cost to citizens, is "socialism", and they have the money to see...

    old machinists catalogs

Let us know what you find out- I always grab these at the yard sales where old dead craftsmen's things are sold. They were valuable back in the days when lots of things were made in America.

    volumne/measurement question

well thank you all for the quick calculation. I need to place it about two feet above the grade, old railroad ties on flat stones are the traditional material for holding up tanks here. I had been thinking of four legs and cross members of 4 x 4 heavy wall, but the weight would be too much...

    Scrap material

I worked for a big food lab in Minnesota, all scrap was carefully sorted and inventoried. Twice a year a big Russian hospital supply company bought it and shipped it home. Stainless, titanium, small parts, fasteners.

    Scrap material

Make a little house for your air compressor, keeps the shop nice and quiet. And donate doghouses to your local shelter, what a great idea.

    Barn Lettering

That horse dealer sign is a historic treasure, in my opinion. Nice to see this thread, I am about to paint my stable's name on the gable end of my barn, using old lettering styles. Waitin for warm weather. It will say "Establo Dos Zetas - Mules and Donkeys" and have a picture of one of my fine...

    Rats burrowing under my pad/slab

My friend in St Paul had this problem- she went to the pound and got a rat terrier, a fine breed of dog- it killed 22 the first day.
