buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

Were you a party to our call? You nailed all the points with uncanny accuracy, including seller's admission that he would stick to his guns and wait it out for someone who really, really appreciated and would pay for quality. Seller is truly a delightful and kind gentleman -- we got along very...

buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

Update: seller and I spoke. Our numbers will never meet. Graciously bowed out and bid each other adieu. Thanks all for the advice here. I counted on it.

buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

Thank you for the recommendation. I'm aware of those forum dynamics. The vintage area of PM seems a little more genteel, and I've posted over there, too. Feedback there is essentially superimposable to this thread. All very good points. No money has changed hands. Seller seems trustworthy...

buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

I questioned the same. Seller told me that he never used power feed or cross feed, but he must have at some early point: he used it enough to know that longitudinal feed didn't work in at least one direction (engagement issue) and the carriage hit something to snap a retaining pin or key in the...

buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

I don’t disagree with you. Seller has tried and failed to sell it for years. I know this. I make an offer for what it’s worth and if the ends don’t meet, then I walk. That is what I have, in addition to a local comparable from which I already walked away.

buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

Thank you. Seller had no idea that the feed rod didn't work until I inspected the lathe under power and I found the issue and reason. Seems a minor point, but I have enriched the seller. If I walk away for whatever reason, however, the seller might very well be emboldened to now relist for more.

buying vintage lathe -- price negotiation question

This question isn't so much about a lathe as it is about price negotiation. I've all but decided to buy a WWII-era Reed-Prentice lathe (my first lathe) that not only saw light use in the Navy, but also was fully disassembled, cleaned, painted, and reconditioned by the seller when they...

Your preferred method of mill scale removal?

I used Walter Flexcut millscale discs. They eat millscale for lunch. No joke. Can be a little finicky on angle to the metal surface, greatly affecting disc wear pattern and rate. I usually prefer non-woven strip discs, which do not leave little score marks that can result from aggressive...

"Purple corn flakes..." Ain't that the truth. One or two of those on a bare forearm will learn you.

I chuckle each time I see that arm chair. Is that for hydration breaks and contemplation?

That is just outstanding! I love the clever use of bottle jacks. Do you experience any binding when raising or lowering the caster assemblies, or is it pretty smooth? (I get most of my metal from the scrapyard, too, requiring lots of prep time to remove rust, mill scale, and occasional grease...

Arcflat fab table? How do you like it? The more projects I make, like your very nice shop table, the more I see the value and ease of an Arcflat to relieve me from deploying an army of clamps, squares, and incantations so that my projects don't inherit the unflat/warps of my steel plate...

Reduce or Eliminate Slop in Threaded Adjustable Feet

Haha. My corollary: I have too many for someone who still works full time doing nothing even remotely close to fabrication . I'm a little envious of my retired and talented elders here...

Reduce or Eliminate Slop in Threaded Adjustable Feet

What a clever idea! Thanks for including that in this thread.
