Check diodes and mosfets screwed to the heatsink. Check diodes for reverse conduction and mosfets for continuity between drain and source (there should be none )

Probably not that sensor then. With the unit off try a measurement of resistance between the torch and ground. Make sure red probe of multimeter is on torch side

Does the light eventually reset itself or stay on? Also if you have a multimeter can you measure the resistance across those two terminals on the thermostat? Also is the fan running when you turn on the unit?

Lonesouth, did you look inside at all? First thoughts are that the wire on the thermostat is shorting somewhere. When you open it and are looking at it from the front the thermostat is screwed to the aluminum block on the right side of the unit. Check worrying and exposed wire and let us know

Yeah typical of this unit. You're hearing all the internal works being starved for power while it bleeds down the internal voltage. Not doing any harm to it though.
