    Beginning wood working advice

Which tools? If someone recommends wood turning pens, and you dont have a lathe, then thats pointless. If someone says bandsaw boxes, and you dont have a bandsaw, again, pointless. If someone says CNC cutting flat pack or hobby/collector items (bottle caps, spoons, baseballs, etc) and you dont...

    DIY Solar

Thanks for the info! That is how I imagined it working, but your post above had me confused. It looks like your setup is almost identical to how mine will be laid out, that is a ton of help! I too am OK without power to the shop in an emergency, and will do the same with a separate generator...

    DIY Solar

This seems like a great place to ask - I am planning on adding solar and a generator to my house in TX, and @dcg9381 , your comments about adding one and the inverter "Switch" is causing me some concern. I have a 320a service to the property, set up with two 200 amp switches. One is dedicated...

    Finally getting started - 54x40

That is a fair assessment. At least around me, it is sort of expected for the size house and property we are going to end up with, and does have some value increase (though certainly not 1:1 at current costs), but I think there is a definite cost/benefit conversation that has to happen. And...

    Finally getting started - 54x40

Very much so. I wish we had started when originally planned, but we switched from "shop building first, then house" to house first, and shop before we finish. We are stick building because the cost of steel has gone up. Local places wanted 40-60k on the carport style steel buildings...

    Finally getting started - 54x40

So after the Covid thing lasting a lot longer than expected, it taking over 2 years to get started building the house, and life in general, we are finally getting started. The plan got looked at and due to spacing of a line of walnut trees we wanted to keep, and being able to drive around both...

Where to buy garage doors north TX

I cannot, they wont let me process with shipping down here. I have quotes on WD doors as well, I am simply trying to avoid spending quite that much. Thank you, their dealer is one I am in contact with, though they pushed me to Janus. Appreciate it! I think this is a fair assessment, and I...

Awesome, thanks! Which ones were you recommending, either for service or price?

Where to buy garage doors north TX

I have many big box stores around me. None are anywhere near competetive on pricing. I just got a quote back from texas overhead door, for a 16x10 insulated steel door (installed) it was over $7k. Un-insulated is $4200. I can order the same size doors from Menards for about $2400 or $1500...

To build my shouse around a car lift?

Do a 10ft ceiling garage, plan around a floor plate lift, do a channel for the floor plate to sit flush, and enjoy your "normal" sized house, and 2 post lift. Yes, I would rather have a taller ceiling and lift, but if you can get 10 ft ceilings and get that sucker high enough to use...

Where to buy garage doors north TX

I am about ready to order some doors. I live in the DFW area, and need a 16x10 and a 12x10 for my shop. I am open to both standard garage doors, and roll up doors. I need these to be insulated, so standard garage doors appeal more for the simple fact they can be insulated to a higher level...

Kreg set up bars on sale $42 (was $69) free shipping

A great alternative, though without the bump design of the Kregs. https://www.chipsfly.com/15pc-setup-block-set.html

    Finally getting started - 54x40

Rough land layout and trees The yellow area is where the shop will be, blue line is seasonal creek I have measured a ~3' drop from front to back of the yellow area, at 100ft back from the little trail you see in the pic, and that leaves probably 30ft+ from the creek area at the closest point...

    Finally getting started - 54x40

Ground mount would be preferable, but not practical. It is not an issue of land, as we have about 25 acres - rather a cleared area to place the panels... The whole 25 acres is what I would call a heavily treed. As in I dont think I could put more than a 2 car garage anywhere on the property...
