OT - Vehicle AC System - Help a buddy out?

No sir... that is not correct. A piercing valve does work like a regular valve, but the first step is to 'open' the valve so that it retracts the pin and does not pierce the can until the valve is completely seated into place on top of the can. Once the can is in place, you 'close' the...

    24x36x12 pole barn lighting ideas

I found some lights on Amazon that I installed on the shop. I put one on each side of the 10x10 and 12x12 garage doors, and one over the man door. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003B4QX6C/?tag=atomicindus08-20 I then put in a large flood light over the main 12x12 door for those times...

    So its finally happening

I did a quick Google search for, "metal building" in your area, and got quite a few hits. https://www.fswest.com/ https://americanbuildingsjs.com/contact/ https://www.californiametalbuildings.net/ I have no idea if any of these companies are worth a damn or not, but they should be able to...

    So its finally happening

Thanks! I am in central Oklahoma, so construction costs will be lower than pretty much anywhere in the country. The shop was built in August, 2018. I did all of the dirt and electrical work, so it was just material costs and renting the lift to hang the lights. The contractor subcontracted...

    So its finally happening

One of best pieces of advice I received for my shop build was from a friend that is a commercial electrician. He asked me about the electrical lay out, where I wanted outlets, lighting, the 2-post lift, welders, other machines that require 240 VAC, etc... I had a general idea, but figured I'd...

    So its finally happening

Just a few thoughts, based on my own shop experience. 16' is a bit much. I went 40 x 50 with a 14' sidewall. 4/12 pitch roof, open span red iron. Insulated. I have a 12x12 door, a 10x10 door, and a man door. My ceiling sits at about 21' - 22' at the peak. In retrospect, I should have gone...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Looks great so far! Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Like you, I'd rather do it myself than pay someone else to mess it up for me. Can't wait to see the finished product. Mark

    Shop security-12 volt radio

For what it's worth, a friend of mine is a cop and we talked about shop safety and trying to deter people from breaking in because it sounds like someone is home. His advise: Don't leave a radio on 24/7. That's a sure sign that nobody is there. Burglars don't fall for that.

Do you love your two-stage furnace?

Bert and TRWham are on point. I won't dog pile on to their comments. As to your comment about someone buying an 80% AFUE rated furnace: There are parts of the country where the HVAC system is installed into the attic space, which is typically not considered conditioned space. In an 80% rated...

Tapping feeder for subpanel using service disconnect.

I have not seen it cause a problem with PVC damaging the conductors, but the Code doesn't specify that PVC conduit is excluded. A sharp inspector will see it and call you on it. (That, I have seen before.)

    Auto accessory wiring

Technically, you are not wrong... Watts (power) is equal to Voltage * Amperes. So if you were to run the numbers at the DC side, 15A at 12 VDC = 180 watts. So what gives? When we start talking about radios (and many other loads) there are some losses in the system. The radio may be able to...

Sloppy Production Quality Meter Box Install

Is there some kind of local settling? Could be as simple as that... and the need for an expansion coupling. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-2-in-Schedule-40-and-80-Standard-Fittings-PVC-Expansion-Coupling-E945J-CAR/100209092

40x60x14 cost for shell and cement?

Four years ago, our 40x50x14 red iron shop with an open span 4/12 pitch roof, insulated, on 5.5" of concrete, with a 12x12 garage door, a 10x10 garage door, and a man door (all doors insulated) with two exterior colors (wainscoting) was less than $38k all in. I pre-ran the PVC conduits under...

    Seeking wire pulling advise

I may have missed it, buy why are you going so deep with the conduit? 54" is way deeper than Code requires, even if it were direct burial.
