How come common metric sets only go to 19mm but common sae sets run to 1” which would be 25mm?

Cost and marketing - I wrote this earlier today but didn’t post.. so some of this has been said by folks smarter than me on this. I’m making a bunch of assumptions, being a DIY’er and not a professional wrench turner. 1” is a nice, round number.. and I’m assuming there are 1” bolts that aren’t...

Cutaway Drawings / Models and Exploded Diagrams

Neat thread. I was surprised not to find cut away diagrams of vises in this thread. Here’s one that @**** Tracy shared with me in a post about Wilton Super Junior vises. Also attached is an old ad and a picture of my 4” jaw Super Junior. Although I have taken apart every other vise I’ve...

    Harry J Epstein Day 2026

I’ve been waiting for Epstein’s day since early Spring. I’ve had a cart that I’ve added and deleted from since February. It’s great that there are featured products on sale during the Epstein Day window, but if my list doesn’t have any products that will be discounted is there any reason for me...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I finally finished my restoration of a Wilton Torco with 3.5” jaws. This was acquired rusty, the paint was old and sloppy, and it was hard to open and close. I paid $40. It came with wood or sheet metal screws to secure the main screw collar. It didn’t look right and certainly didn’t feel...

    Amazon Prime Day

Wilton Super Junior vises are on sale from $86-$106. They come in 2.5” and 4” wide jaws and in stationary base with swivel as well as clamp on variety. I got mine used, but these look like good deals on new, utility grade Wiltons.

    Amazon Prime Day

Thx. That one is 2” wider but only has 4.5 lbs of pulling force. The one on Amazon has 10 lbs.

    Amazon Prime Day

I think I need one of these. A 15” Toolwiz rolling magnetic sweeper. I get wire wheel fragments in my shop and that’s where my bikes are stored. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F6YCCK4P?tag=atomicindus08-20

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

I’m definitely keeping this one bare metal. I replaced the broken gauge with a new one. It’s Silca, all metal, has a nice chrome ring, and best of all, the numbers are readable for my 50-something year old eyes! I’ve wiped it down with BLO, and love the end result. @Odd-job Youre the first to...

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

One related update. I have another Silca Pista pump that I have a new gauge coming in for. I stripped off the flaking paint and now it’s bare metal except for the original Silca sticker. Last night I put a Hiro Chuck on it. I think it looks good. I could paint the body, or I could leave it...

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

I recently added Clik Valves to a few of my bikes. Here are my observations. 1. Clicking on and off is convenient. It eliminates the hassle of screwing the presta top on and off to fill tires. 2. The minimal release of air when clicking on and off is also a nice feature. 3. If you have a...

    The OKnife U1 Utility Folder

Great. Another rathole for me. GJ tends to do that to me. Actually, I‘m the one who has tendencies to rathole down different topics. Topics I’ve locked into on GJ: vises, bike speciality tools, c-clamps, Knipex, Proto, Milwaukee, file handles, and all of the various screwdriver brands. Why...

    I Love Lamp

Thanks! I was definitely concerned about the strain relief. Thanks for the pointer. Getting the right new cord would be good too. I have a fairly new Home Depot HDX extension cord that I can use. It’s definitely thicker than the original, so your drill out recommendation makes sense. Are these...

    I Love Lamp

@walta - here’s a picture of the guts. Looks pretty straightforward to match up the black and white wires with a replacement three pronged cord. Which would be the best place to attach the ground? The star washers look really convenient. The hex bolt heads don’t look as easy to remove, but make...

    I Love Lamp

I think I need to do this. I’ve been just avoiding touching the lamp and my laptop, since I know of the potential of the minor tingly shock I can get. I really want to make it work safely.
